Without waiting even a moment, he snapped into action, bringing the razor sharp ragged blade around in a wide sweeping arc. Good, he didn't need to think about those ******** scaly bastards any more. All that mattered now was the fight at hand.
He took out a good bit of the nearby undergrowth with the swing, but at least he connected.

Without even stepping back, he swung again, still meeting some resistance, even in the clearing thank to the scale and reach of Tracey, striking again but still finding his hook got snagged on plants and made the swipes not even half as strong as usual.
At least he was hitting s**t, that was all that mattered. He wanted to flush out more of these bastards, he needed a decent number to test this gun on.

He was trying much harder than usual, really keeping an eye on where the hits landed, not just his usual haphazard swings. He was fighting like he was being watched and that meant really thinking about it as finally he pulled free of the undergrowth with the hook, and even as the little shadowling fought back with sharp claws, he twisted Tracey in mid air and slammed the axe down at an angle.
The creature dissipated with a silent screech. He grinned, looking pleased.

It seemed like an easy mission. Jordan wasn't sure whether that meant he should be wary or not. On one hand, the simplicity of it might mean that there were unpleasant surprises just waiting to be sprung upon them; on the other, it was also possible that Allan had just given Rep a simple, easy mission. Well, they'd find out.
The wildlife outside the pathway seemed to be unable to cross the barrier formed by the daggers. That might make things easier. The clearing they emerged into was empty and peaceful, large enough to camp in or large enough to fight comfortably; Jordan summoned Ferros and paced slowly around the perimeter, staying alert for any sign of trouble.
Boredom made it much more difficult to stay alert, but they'd been told to eliminate the creatures inside the spirit path; that probably meant that something could appear at any moment. Rep was getting impatient; Jordan watched him out of the corner of his eye, firmly squashing the impulse to say something. If he never let Rep get to the point where he needed to rein himself in, Rep wouldn't learn the feeling of the crucial point of self-control.
When a shadowling came crawling out of the brush, it was a relief. Something to fight. Something ridiculously small to fight, at that. Jordan braced for a horde of the things to come pouring out after the frontrunner. When only a few followed, he stared at them with a twinge of unease. Was that it? That couldn't be it.

A shadowling came oozing towards Jordan; he kicked at it. It recoiled with a shrill squeal, then hissed and latched tiny claws onto his ankle.

Jordan shook his leg, tossing the shadowling off; its little claws scratched at his leg, but couldn't get a grip. "Small fry."
I'm hungry, Ferros hissed.
Okay, okay, we'll get serious. Jordan shook his head; just because it was shadowlings didn't mean he could slack on the job.

This time, as the shadowling leapt at him, he aimed carefully and batted it away, swinging Ferros in a short, precise arc. If you get any bigger, we're going to start having trouble targeting.
When I get bigger, Ferros sniffed, there will be more of me to smash things with and it will not matter so much if we don't aim.

But then we'll cause even more collateral damage than we do now, Jordan pointed out.
Don't care. Hungry, pleeeeeease, want to flame, Ferros whined.
"Okay, okay." The shadowling dragged itself forward again and reared up to claw at him one more time; Jordan flipped Ferros in his hand and drove the spike that capped his barrel through the shadowling. The creature made a thin, high sound and smoked away to nothingness. Ferros rumbled a low sound of satisfaction.

The moment JErry had stepped through the portal, the sneezing had begun.
By the time the shadows had started smoking and creeping, his eyes were streaming, his nose red and runny, and he was mostly miserable.
"Why didn't... didn't you- ah... ah..." A sneeze, "T-tell me we were coming to the frickin' jungle?" He sniffed irritably. He would have packed more tissues. And antihistamines.

"I'm tellin' you, we wen' the wrong way - owww bugger that, I'm jus' gonna lie here and wait till I get better 'k?"
There was a loud snap, and then the rustle of leaves behind the trainees. "Oh come on, the path is just down this way," A second voice groused, "Hey look, there's a clearing up ahead, we can rest there."
Unfortunately, the clearing up ahead was exactly where the trainees were situated.
And staring right at the trainees staring at them were two figures that were decidedly very much not human. As in half-human half-reptilian in form, body covered in scales, a flat head, feathers, and a long lizard-like tail complete with spines. Both of them were holding a basketful of what looked like simple greens - herbs perhaps - though one of them had a series of gashes down their face that continuously dripped black ichor onto the mud. Wrapped around their arms was a simple armband with an odd emblem.
The herb basket rustled loudly as it dropped on the ground, spilling over. A split second later, the two were running as far as their clawed feet could take them away from the clearing, shouting unintelligibly as the trees and foliage rustled and crunched around them. Their skin colouration however, gave them a natural advantage as they completely camouflaged themselves in the environment, unlike the stark white of the Hunters that told everyone exactly who they were.
One thing they had not accounted for however, was the trail of black ichor that very notably continued a steady path along the ground.
Very, very far away from the enclosed and restricted "spirit path".

Watching the others kill their shadowlings was satisfying, but somehow not enough. The numbers were small and not an enormous challenge, at least not compared even to shadow run.
There were voices. He froze. Voices in the jungle. Understandable voices in the jungle.
The moment where both parties simply stared at one another felt like forever. They were ******** scaly bastards too, dangerous looking as far as he was concerned, despite what they were carrying. This must be what they'd been sent out to find. And even if it wasn't, they weren't ******** human.
Allan and Simon would have to ******** promote him if he brought them the HEADS of a rogue element they didn't even know existed. Sometimes you had to take a chance to win big. He couldn't lose.
There was a fleeting moment when he eyed the clear barrier, then the jungle, and remembered the instructions but the longer he hesitated the more distance was left between their group and the fleeing creatures. The more real glory vanished into the trees. This had to be part of the test, to see if he had the balls to be a real on the fly thinking leader.
He turned to the group, standing up tall and waving Tracey threateningly "NEW ******** ORDERS." he snarled "AFTER THE MONSTERS!"
And with that he turned and stalked off into the trees, following the black ichor, hacking his way through the undergrowth with Tracey wherever he had to, completely and utterly intent on tracking them down and bringing back their heads. His team, he presumed were behind him, after all, as far as he was concerned he was the leader, today it was their job to follow him.
