He still refused to look at her.
"I was not fraternizing," said Mengyao, in a slightly disgruntled tone of voice as he attempted to keep at least some of his dignity left - which wasn't very much, when he looked at it. "I was merely enlisting the help of the locals - unintentionally. Though the student was...shall we say...a little less than pleasant."
She was smiling. Why was she smiling like that. Mengyao's scowl deepened.
"It was more of a challenge than I had estimated," he said indignantly, brows drawing together in a frown. "That...that thing was just incredibly stubborn and refused to comply with us, and therefore it attacked us quite terribly."
Now it sounded as though he were making excuses. Mengyao flushed a little, embarrassed in spite of himself.
"...yes, I got it," he mumbled, irritated with himself. "Though it took quite a bit of time."

"I'm sure the help was still appreciated, to an extent." she offered, in regards to the student. it took all types, right?
He wasn't looking at her, but that didn't stop her from staring at him, hoping his wall would crack. Keeping her head tilted a little, her curiousity was perked, the light smile stuck around, showing him that she was being light hearted - not the serious, take everything with a serious tone Lifen she held herself to be. It usually worked.
In a somewhat brave move for herself, she reached out to grab one of his hands, placing it in her own bandaged hand and patted the top of it. "Well, I believe if you did capture it in the end, then that is the most important part of it, yes?" she offered up to him, trying to cheer him up. "It took me a bit of time also, there were only two of us, and the alpaca was . . . persistant." she murmured, pouting just a bit.
"If it makes you feel better, I think you did a good job, then."

"It was...perhaps. Maybe," said Mengyao, attempting to be dismissive of the fact by waving a hand in a very noncommittal manner. Truth be told, she had been helpful - but the very last thing Mengyao wanted to do was admit that fact.
The ground was suddenly quite fascinating.
A small, light touch of fingers made him turn his head, however; Lifen had taken one of his hands in her own and was holding it gently, patting it in a reassuring manner. Mengyao gave a small sigh, exhaling slowly, and his dual colored eyes finally flickered back towards her.
"...I have a feeling you're just saying that to appease me," he said, bit dryly, but his cheeks, tinged the very palest of reds, belayed the indifference he was attempting to show. Mengyao's fingers curled around Lifen's, and he lifted her hand to his mouth, pressing a very gentle kiss to her knuckles.
"You are far too good to me, you know," he said with a sigh, feigning exasperation as he dropped her hand and pushed aside some of his hair. He turned his head, offering her a smile. "But I am pleased that you are apparently more capable of combat of yourself than I expected - though I do wish I had been there to help."

"Possibly, possibly not." She sing-songed back, in regards to appeasing him. "I do not throw my words so lightly, so keep that in mind, hm?" It was the truth, she picked her words wisely, and used then where she felt was the best time - it kept her honest.
As he lifted her hand to kiss her knuckles, it was her turn to deflect her glances, hoping to withstand any colour that may show on her face. "I may be, but I believe everyone should have someone who is willing to tell them what they want to hear. I suppose I am that to you, I doubt Yuzhi or even the Ms. Lan would." She offered, with a soft chuckle. It was true, but it still made her flush a little.
She had been by his side since the day he basically burst in to her life - a little rich run away that she made work with her, scaring him from the life of a regular lifestyle - afraid to ruin the seams of his cloth. Now, he was doing things like fighting alpacas and partaking events with middle and lower-case clanmates from inside Conquest and out.
Everyone was changing, it seemed.
Lifting her gaze again when he started conversing again, she couldn't help but chuckle a bit. "Well, if I find myself in a tussle with another alpaca, I'll make sure you're around, okay? We will catch it together."kuromeez Lifenpaca ;; <33 thank youuu

He gave her a look. "You're being awfully cryptic tonight, my dear," he said dryly, as he refrained from rolling his eyes. A high standing member of Conquest did not do such a childish gesture, after all - at least not in the presence of a lady.
Mengyao's expression softened a little. "I know," he said, eyes flickering towards Lifen as she turned her head away - but not before he saw the faint red tinge her pale cheeks. Smiling a little to himself, he added "And really I would prefer to have no one other than yourself tell me 'exactly what I want to hear.' You don't even do that sometimes; you tell me what I need to hear, isn't that right?"
His tone was light, but the meaning rang true. Lifen did not mince words, nor did she try to placate him when the situation did not call for it. Reassure him, yes, but she was not the sort to pretend something was better when in truth it was not. She had been like this since they had first met - one of the only people who had stayed by his side, despite the fact that he seemed to antagonize many of his classmates and childhood acquaintances. Despite everything, and despite the hatred of feeling week, Mengyao could not deny that he had come to rely on Lifen enough that he needed her. She was the one person who still treated him kindly even when he did not return the favor to others.
Even if that would be the last thing he would ever admit.
A low laugh escaped his throat. "Yes, well, I'll expect that, all right? Otherwise we might have a casualty on our hands..."
It was difficult to say whether he meant the alpaca or himself.Nerpin YOU'RE WELCOME BBY I got it last night and was like askldfn /SENDS TO NERP ASAP <333

"I am just keeping you on your toes." She admitted in jest, in reply to him.
The moniker that he seemed to have deemed around her was rewarded with a bit of a pout, her lips pursing as she looked up at him. It was less of annoyance, and more of a small embarrassment - it was well known she was painfully shy, so having him be so endearing about it almost antagonized her. She was pretty sure it elated him to see the reaction. Clearing her throat a little she nodded to him, hearing his request.
"I do not intend to sugar-coat things. I have not since we were youths, seeing as sometimes, you, of all people," she emphasised by tapping him in the shoulder with a finger, "have to hear it as it is. Most people can not get past rank to tell you either." Which was the truth. She could - normally - get in trouble for talking down a noble at times, but it had just become such normalcy that it was more of a situation where he needed it. It kind of became amusing to an extent, him holding her skirt-tails about situations and just needing a voice of clarity. Even if her's was soft-spoken and rarely heard. It was like she was keeping her sentances in so that she could use them in the right situation.
Giving a soft sigh, she let her face soften up again, in to a small smile, before shrugging a little. "I'll make sure that you do not get in any more trouble with our fluffy friends.""kuromeez Mengyao vs. Alpaca is always a bad fight.

"I would have thought you wanted me to stand flat, not on my toes," said Mengyao, all-too-innocently. "Otherwise I would tower over you even more than I already do."
There was a slight pause while he waited for her to say something, trying - and failing - to hold back the smile on his face. Then he noticed the pout and lifted his hand, greying fingers touching her chin playfully.
"Do you know," said Mengyao conversationally. "that if you keep jutting your lower lip out like that, a little birdy is going to come and perch on it, hmm?"
Grinning, he dropped his hand away, finally finding the fan tucked into one of his sleeves. He did not pull it out, however, but instead absently stroked the soft, downy feathers as he listened to Lifen speak. His head tilted towards her, a slightly dry expression on his face.
"I happen to be as innocent as a dove," he told her - which was not true in the slightest, but he was smiling anyway as he said it, the corners of his lips curling upwards in a teasing smirk. "However, I am pleased that you think enough of me to tell me how it is."
It was true that Mengyao cared about their classes - he was a noble, while Lifen was not - and under normal circumstances he would have dismissed her. But he had known her too long and too well to even think about that sort of thing now.
His hand idly twisted the corner of one sleeve. "Yes, please do."Nerpin true story: my mom used to tell me that thing about the pouting when I was a kid...and sometimes still now :Ua

She couldn't help but break out in to a soft laugh when he came back with his statement, the innocence dripping from his words until the end. Tapping him lightly on the arm with a bandaged hand, before he cupped a hand under her chin, almost stopping her. With the grin still on her face, she looked at him with mis-matched eyes.
"I could always use a new friend, it could sing to me in the morning and whisper lullibies at night that I would dream about." She offered up to him, her story telling apparent. "Also, I am in the firm belief that you cheated, that or your posh life allowed you to rocket up as tall as you are now, leaving me down here." She finished, giving him a daring look.
"Your innocence is a façade." She dared, as she felt his hand drop again, "But it really does take you far, don't lose it." She stated, which almost came off as a plead than anything. She didn't want him to change any more than he had.

She was grinning, which was always a good sign, but Mengyao was giving Lifen a mock scowl. Or maybe it wasn't all that mocking anyway, since he said, a bit dryly, "Yes, well, make sure to not pout too much, dearest, otherwise...well, never mind."
He gave a small, very undignified snort and shook his head, amused in spite of himself. "You are quite something, that's for sure. I've never really known anyone quite like you before - which I'm not sure is a good thing or a bad thing."
He was teasing her again. Mengyao could barely hide his smile, even as he was looking over at her, Lifen's profile pale and petite in the moonlight. Her skin, nearly translucent in some pats, slid smoothly over the bones of her leg, visible beneath the skin, tinged with the palest of greens.
"I never have facades," said Mengyao, though it was slightly distracted, his brows creasing as he followed the shape of the bone with his eyes. She had always had extraordinarily pale skin, but it had not ever gotten this bad before...well, before.
His eyes flickered back up to her.
"I already promised I would not change, and I will keep that promise."

His scowl awarded with a slightly innocent eyebrow raise as he answered her, before nodding softly. "I will try, but no promises - and I assure you, you have layers, liken to your clothing. It just takes the special kind of people to unravel them." She offered to him, before his attention was taken away, her eyes trying to catch his own, as he seemed to go off in to his own little world, before catching at what appeared to be her leg - which made her move a shuffle a little, feeling a little self-conscious about them.
It was something that she only seemed to have, now-adays, outside of the Conquest clan, normal-like, inside the clan, everyone else seemed very . .. opaque. Lowering one bandaged hand on top of her lap, she left her eyes down at their levels, blushing about it.
"I will stay the same as I am, as promised." She murmured, before looking back up at him. "Thank you, by the way, you did not have to." She finished, lifting a hand to show her meaning. It was . . . odd to be coddled.
