Katrina
RP Color: #D98719

RP commentary that won Katrina:
Katrina had spent a great deal of the past two days, searching for just the right piece of wood to use as her dowsing rod. She was quite satisfied with the piece she found, and headed out to see if she could locate some water. She felt the stick tug a bit and she followed where it led. Sure enough, as the point of the rod touched the ground, she was positive she had found a source of water. She marked the spot with a piece of cloth, tied to a pole and headed off in search of more such places. She'd been walking for a while with no results, and she was getting discouraged. Was on source going to be enough to supply the whole town? She doubted it. But then the rod began to pull her to the left, and she followed, hoping that again, it would show her another underground spring where they could sink a well. She didn't have far to walk either before the dowsing rod once again dipped to the ground. Again she marked the spot with a flag so the others would know where to dig. Moving away from the spot so the rod would not home in on it again, she continued her search. So far, she had found two sources of water for the town, but a third would be even better. She'd moved out of the field she had found them in, and was moving a bit farther down the road. So far the dowsing rod had not shown any indication of water nearby. She decided to take a rest, and sat down under a tree. Surely if there were trees, there was water under the ground. Perhaps it was too deep for her dowsing rod to locate though. She certainly hoped not. Though the trees here were old, and their roots probably traveled deep into the ground. After having a drink from her flask, and rubbing the soles of her feet, she once again rose, and resumed her search. Was that a tug on the end of the rod she felt? She backed up, and started walking forward again. Yes! It was definitely a tug, but the rod was not making any effort to bend to the ground. She continued forward, hoping she was following the rod in the right direction. She began to doubt she was going in the wrong direction. The rod was no longer pulling her forward. She tried to find the spot where it had begun to tug in her hands, and then tried a slightly different direction. She was getting nowhere, and it seemed as though this spot was devoid of water altogether. So she decided to leave this area and move on down the road a bit farther. There was a copse of trees about a mile down the road, and she had high hopes that she would find a water source there. Entering the trees, she paid close attention to the rod in her hands. There was the slightest of tugs made by the rod in her hands, but she was at a lost as to what direction was causing it. When she had volunteered for this job, she came to it a complete novice as far as dowsing went. So when the rod tugged ever so slightly in her hands, she could only guess at its true meaning. Suddenly, the rod seemed to want to jump out of her hands. It was pulling so hard against her hands that she almost lost her hold on it. As she followed the pull, she weaved in and around a number of trees, until the rod suddenly dipped to the ground, sinking its tip into the soft earth. This was a good one, she thought to herself. The rod had not responded like this at the other two sites. She couldn't wait to get back to town and inform the others of her success. Hopefully the others who had volunteered were having the same luck in their searches.

Brevian
RP Color: #0099CC

RP commentary that won me Brevian:
The challenge had gone out to all able-bodied mers in the Kingdom, for a test of skill against the Kings Knight. Brevian was not one to pass up a chance like this. He'd already been trying to beat the King in a dice game, and not having much luck, but perhaps his skill with a sword would prove better. He stepped out on the field of battle and prepared to cross swords with Sir Denigal. he fight got off to a good start, with Brevian making first contact. Sir Denigal appeared to be surprised by the force with which the young fighter had been able to deliver his blow. Once again the young fighter pummeled the King's knight, pushing him back up against the wall. The seasoned knight had best start taking this young mer seriously. t seems our brave knight has taken the advice of this announcer, as he has laid out the young challenger on the ground. This battle goes to the King's knight! [A blinding light enters the arena--A Strong heart, this one has! And the announcer, without knowing it, calls for another round as the fallen warrior is gathered up by the light and set back on his feet.] What is this? I'm feeling compelled to give the young fighter another chance! It must be the work of the gods. And look! He's miraculously coming to his feet! Even our brave knight can't seem to believe his eyes. Well, this is shaping up to be quite a fight folks. Would you look at that! Did you see that hit? By cricky, I think our brave knight is seeing stars! Whatever happened to our young fighter seems to have done him a world of good. Let's hope it wasn't a fluke. [The Crowd roars in joyful anticipation, the excitement evident...!] And again our brave knight is pushed back by the might of the young mer. Who would have thought? Where did this young fighter come from? He should have been knighted ages ago. Okay, maybe not quite ages, as he doesn't appear to be that old, but still. I'd not pass him over if I needed a good fighter at my back. Let's see if he can keep it up. There are a lot of rounds yet to go, so drink your mead, and relax. Quick! Someone go call the King! His knight is getting his armor kicked! What's going to happen next? Our brave Sir Denigal is staying on his feet, but for how much longer can he withstand the pummeling he is taking? Seven rounds, if you count the one where our young fighter got knocked on his keister, and that last round has Sir Denigal shaking his head. I think he may be hearing bells ringing. I think perhaps after this round, if he's still standing, we should call a short break, to give him a chance to catch his breath, and possibly sharpen his sword. *laughing*
Well, it would appear that a break was just the thing we needed, as our young fighted seemed to be losing steam. Now that I've got something to eat, and both fighters have had a chance to get a drink, take a pee, sharpen their swords, and...well just about anything else they needed to do, let's get this fight started again shall we? Well I'll be a merman's oyster! Did you see that hit?! I don't know how Sir Denigal is still standing. Whatever that young mer had in his drink, I WANT SOME! Is the King here yet? He has got to see this young man! In this humble announcers opinion, I think the King is in for a new first knight in the kingdom. Aside from that early hit by the Sir Denigal, this young mer seems to be invincible. Can he keep up this pace though. There are still fifteen rounds to go after this one. And yes, I had to stop and count. I'm terrible at mathematics. Well, one more round to the young mer! Ladies, are you paying attention? He may not be married you know. This could be your chance. Uh-oh! From the look on our young challengers face, he didn't appreciate that last comment on my part. I don't know how much longer this young challenger can keep up this unbelievable pace! It's as if he's been given special powers by one of the gods. Let's put our feet up and see if it lasts. Hey! Get your hands off my mead! You scallywag! Don't make me call the guards! Someone call the cartographer! We need to record this fight! What? What do mean it's not the cartographer we need? Doesn't he draw? Oh! We need the court painter, well go get him! What? The court painter is a woman? When did that happen? Well, go get her then! I don't care who it is, we just need to get this down for posterity! Oh look! They're about to start the next round! Once again the announcer was on his feet. Oh my ears! How in Mearhdon can Sir Denigal take such a beating and still stand? I think that last blow surely must have broken something. Wait! Is Sir Denigal favoring his shield arm? Could this be the end of his tenure as King's Knight? Will he have to live out the rest of his life in shame? *a glare from Sir Denigal* sorry my Lord! No offense intended. Just making conversation. I'm sure this round will go to you. Two strong hits in a row by our young challenger. What's his name? Brevian? WELL DONE YOUNG BREVIAN! Oh wait, I believe Sir Denigal is calling for a short break. Certainly my Lord! Take all the time you need! I need to go see to my sick mother anyway. Shall we say and hour? Very well, one more round and then we shall call a break.
Welcome back everyone! It looks like our young challenger and Sir Denigal are ready to pick up where they left off. Our young Brevian only has to last another ten rounds, and he shall leave the field victorious. I spoke with the King while we were away, and he has not yet decided what Sir Denigal's future might be should he lose this battle. Now, let's get this round under way. Let the fighting commence! Well, I think our young Brevian must have visited the goddess's shrine during our break, because he seems to have returned with just as much strength as before we left. Whereas Sir Denigal must have visited the tavern. We can only hope he finds his mojo soon. Someone get out there and pick up those banana peels! Sorry about that Sir Denigal! I have no idea who threw that out there. I'm sure if he hadn't slipped on that, his blow would have landed on the young challenger, but as it stands, Brevian was able to land a blow on Sir Denigal's shield arm. You've got it? Good, now GET OFF THE FIELD YOU FOOL! [ The wind blows, it is as though the Goddess is ammused...] JUMPIN' JEHOSAPHATE! Did you see that blow? I don't know if the King could have avoided that blow! *looks around* He's not here is he? No? Good! Sir Denigal is not looking too good, but I'm sure he'll come back any round now. What are the odds now? Really? That much? Wow! DID YOU SEE THAT? This kid is not kidding! He really wants this for himself! I'm beginning to think Sir Denigal wants to retire. What? His term is for another 10 years? Well, if he doesn't turn this thing around, contract or no contract, he may have no choice but to retire. *feels warm breeze blow through* Ahhhh...Perhaps this breeze will put some life into Sir Denigal's arm. Well, so much for that hope. I don't know what else our brave knight can do to regain his composure, other than send for a spell from Tiri-Ithil, that witch in the tower. Just don't say her name three times. We don't want her showing up here. No! No! Well folks, our young challenger, Brevian only has to withstand the blows, or lack of, from Sir Denigal for another three rounds, and he will be declared the winner, and receive a night with the Queen....What? That wasn't the agreed upon prize for the winner? Does Sir Denigal know that? Oh, he does? Well then, perhaps that is why he's doing so poorly. I mean what's the point of winning if that's not the prize? The crowd is standing on its feet! The atmosphere is palpable! Only two more rounds to go, and it's looking like Sir Denigal is about to breath fire, he's so upset with himself. If I were you, I'd stay out of his way if this goes badly for him. But perhaps this next round will be his swan song. We can only wait and see. Can you believe that?! Sir Denigal had the young Brevian up against the wall, and it looked like he was going to bear him to the ground, but then, at the last minute, the young fighter fought back with all his strength and pushed Sir Denigal back. Phew! I said that without taking a breath! *laughs* Sir Denigal can't believe his eyes. I do believe I see the beginnings of respect for this young man in our seasoned veterans eyes. One more round, and we shall either crown a new knight, or we shall congratulate the other on a job well done. The crowd was on their feet and jumping over the wall of the stands, rushing toward him, as Sir Denigal walked toward him. “Well done young man! I don't think I've faced one such as yourself in quite a while. Where did you learn how to fight? I don't believe I've seen you around the castle.”

Brevian was still trying to catch his breath. He'd never fought such a long fight before, and his muscles were screaming at him as the crowd slowly approached him and Sir Denigal. Sir Denigal saw the crowd approaching and putting up his hand, instructed them to stand back. “My father taught me sir. He was the weapons master for the King many years ago, but he had to retire when he suffered an accident. This is my first time here, and I was hoping that the King might find a use for my sword.”

Denigal laughed at his statement and said, “Son, if the King doesn't have a use for your sword, I will find one myself. The King would be foolish not to give you a place in his army. And you will have my recommendation if you want it.”

Brevian smiled and accepted the knights offer, “I would be grateful to you for that Sir Denigal. But honestly, right now all I want is a hot bath, a cold mead, and a soft bed, in that order. But I'm afraid I don't have the money for any of it.”

Denigal smiled and putting his arm around the young mans shoulder, he said, “Come with me Brevian. I will make sure you have all of that and more should you need, or want it.” He walked the young mer across the field of battle toward his tent, much to the disappointment of the crowd. A few of them, those who were brave enough to risk the wrath of the knight, followed at a distance, hoping to find an opening where they could have a word with the victorious challenger. Denigal's page held the tent flap aside as the two fighters entered the cool darkness of the tent. “Brecken, bring our young friend here a cup of mead, and then go fix a hot bath for him to soak in.” The page ran off to do as he had been instructed, and Denigal sat Brevian down in a chair, and pulling up another one, sat down across from him. “Once you've had your bath, I'll take you to the castle, and introduce you to the King. He's going to have heard about you by then, and want to meet you face to face.” Brevian shuddered uncontrollably at the mention of meeting the King, to which the knight said, “Don't worry Brevian, the King is no one to fear. Just be yourself, and you'll do just fine. The King appreciates honesty above all else.” The page returned with two cups of mead, placed them before the two men, and ran off to draw the bath for the young fighter.
