Malodore frowned. "How very rude..." it began, then decided to try a more dramatic tactic. It focused its FEAR into its wings, and-

-stopped, trembling suddenly as memory crashed into it like a relentless flood. The last time it had focused its FEAR to attack was when the Isles had already been blasted into slag, Riley's stone arms were around it, its friends falling to Insanity, and it alone had held onto an untainted mind. Alone. All alone.

The plague doctor dropped to one knee, slowly shaking its head; the FEAR flowed back into its system, unspent. "I... mi dispace," it managed. "Memory hits... hits hard..." The sense of loneliness was sharp again, as it had not been for some days. It would be well again, it knew it, but for right now the pain was renewed. It didn't even notice when the Alpaca spat at it again.

Fai hesitated, then stepped back from the alpaca so his hair couldn't attack it again. "I believe," he said slowly, "that this is the time for a slight break." He was really lousy with moments like this, but he didn't know what else to do with the plague doctor shaking so horribly.

"Have you suffered some sort of trauma while fighting?" Fai asked, coming off more as a scientist than a would-be comforter. "I have heard that many of the scarelings here were on the isles when this happened, am I wrong in thinking you were, as well?"

"I... yes," Malodore said, feeling somewhat ashamed of its apparent weakness. "I was there, doing what I could... it seems foolish, in the face of all the Horsemen have lost, to be so... emotional over a single life," it said, shaking its head again. "But she was going- she was my mate, and I fought while... protecting her corpse." Slightly imprecise, really, as it could be argued that Riley's stone embrace had been protecting the plague doctor, but it didn't feel like getting into the details.

"But I can still fight," it said, quickly, fumbling back for a sharpened feather.

"I... I understand your pain," Fai said quietly. "I lost my lover, as well. It is... difficult," he said slowly. "And you look at those that survived and find yourself wondering why they survived when she did not." He looked away, thinking about her once again. "And that fails you, simply because you need the ones that survived desperately, yet you find yourself... resenting them."

He shook his head, looking at the alpaca. "I am Famine. I take nothing for granted. All things can be lost in an instant." And were.

Malodore was stunned for a moment - while it knew, abstractly, that the Horsemen had lost nearly everything and was determined to respect that fact, the plague doctor had been so focused on its own loss that it had forgotten... the chances of that loss being mirrored in the Horsemen as well was so high as to be a certainty. It was so obvious, in retrospect.

"I know... why she did not survive," it said, voice low. "She had an... an affliction. I thought we had more time to seek a cure... but it is as you say. All things can be lost in an instant. I have now devoted myself to that cure, in her memory..." It was a different sort of guilt, to be sure, but it was guilt nonetheless.

"It is a worthy goal," Fai said. "It is one that will last a lifetime and beyond, I am sure. But this pain, regardless of how they were taken from you... I am certain that it is something that will also last a lifetime and beyond. Do not forget this pain," he said quietly, turning to the plague doctor finally. "Do not let her memory fade from your mind, as painful as it might be. That would lessen all the things she has done for you... and Cairo has done for me."

He walked away from the alpaca, sitting down and leaning against the wall. "We have little to no understanding of time on our isles. And yet I know it was not enough."

Then he looked at the plague doctor. "This disease, does it have anything to do with graying hands?"

Malodore looked startled. "It... si, it can... not like my own hands, of course. These are natural to my species." Indeed, the bloodmetal claws had a sheen to them, more silver than the flat grey of Insanity. "But yes, grey patches of flesh is a... a symptom. It is called Insanity..."

"I see," Fai said, frowning slightly. "I did find it odd for a war horseman to possess hands like that. They are so disgustingly healthy all of the time," he said, half to himself.

"Would it be too much to ask you to keep me informed of your findings?" he asked the plague doctor. "My fellow Famine--er, lost clan members and I have a vested interest in this disease as well, I believe."

"Of course," Malodore said, with a nod; it slowly rose to its feet again, shaking out its wings. The alpaca gave it a sidelong glance and moved over slightly, focusing on a tuft of grass a few feet further away from the Horseman and the plague doctor. "We are both creatures of Science, after all - and this affliction has the potential to affect many beings, both Horsemen and not."

It bobbed its head, a little awkwardly. "Grazie - that is, thank you... my apologize for delaying you. I, ah, wish you well also... this path we walk is not exactly the same, but similar in some aspects..."

"Yes, yes it is," Fai agreed. "It is good to know that we are not alone for it." Although he had yet to talk to Sal or the others about it--nor did he really plan to. This was petty when compared to all the loss that they as a people had suffered. "Now, I really should get this creature off of the school premises. I am sure he will cause more trouble than he is worth."

As he got near, precious shot out, nipping at the alpaca with more enthusiasm than aim.

Malodore chuckled. "I am sure - though I am, if you would permit the sentiment, rather glad he encroached onto our property. Otherwise, I may not have made your acquaintance quite yet."

Rather than funneling its FEAR into its wings again, Malodore used the bladed feather it had already plucked. It waited; the alpaca spat at it again, but it took the blow and lunged, this time acting at close rather than long range, gaze fixed on the back legs. If the anatomy was similar, perhaps it could slice a crucial tendon-

It was a little hard to aim, but the alpaca made an awful sound and jerked away, one hind leg raised off the ground. It looked very subdued indeed. "There, now..." Malodore came up from the crouch it had landed in, straightening its hat automatically.

"A lovely shot indeed," Fai said with a smile, heading forward as well. "I admit, I'm torn. Although I'm sure it would behoove me to get on the priestess's good side, it is just so tempting to get on this creature's inside instead. So before I give into the very real temptation, I believe I will take him back, after all," he said. "I think, on the whole, this study of 'insanity' would be far more interesting, and not just to myself."

((Forgot to roll 1d100))

He moved closer to the alpaca, bringing out one of the vines from his hair to use as a tether--and the jackdamn thing skittered away from him, desperate not to be caught. "Would you hold still already?" he demanded.

"Stop that," Malodore told the alpaca firmly. It made a grab for the creature, but the thing moved and Malodore thwacked into a headstone instead.

Clearly, plague doctors really weren't designed for wrangling.

"Really I'm thinking that perhaps dissecting it would be much easier," Fai said, heading to block the alpaca from escaping, his hair fully coming out around him. "For your own sake I would suggest you being more cooperative," he told he alpaca.

The sight of that many heads with hungry, open mouths, was enough to make the alpaca hold still long enough for Fai to loop one of the headless vines around his neck. "There, wasn't that much simpler?" he asked of the alpaca.

For such a short little fellow he did have his intimidating points, it seemed.
