Madison opened the door into the hallway, only to almost trip over the more solid mist-beast that had been leaning on the door. Thinking quickly, she dodged its attack, then landed, grinding one heel down through its misty skull or whatever the ********. It was an effective attack, as the thing flailed and then vanished.
"I wonder if there's such a thing as runic stilettos, pika?" she mused, pulling her door closed behind her. The hallway was still thick with fog. Maybe she'd go a little bit further down before retreating - even though she was physically fine, she didn't want the other runic shoe to drop while she was still in here alone.

Madison slowly walked down the hallway, keeping Kouki's blades crossed in front of her. The fog increased, making her a bit antsy, but nothing was happening. Nothing jumped out at her, nothing moved other than faint eddies in the mist...
Madison!!
Kouki's warning came just in time, as suddenly something massive, barely seeming able to fit in the narrow hallway, shot out of the fog towards her. She twisted to the side, but there just wasn't enough room to dodge properly and the thing's attack smacked her into a wall. "Kouki-pika!"
With a rising hiss, the blades rose free of her hands and the scabbards, then flew to strike at the beast as the serpent-sword's charged attack activated. The blades sliced and swirled, occasionally becoming lost in the fog, but the creature's fog roiled and drew back a bit as the blades returned to her.
It is powerful, Kouki reported, tension rippling through their shared mind. We call for aid?
"No, pika. Not yet, pika," Madison said grimly. "Let's see how much damage we can do."

The fog-beast pulled back and darkened, its eyes bright - given the confined quarters and the size of the thing, it was eerily like trying to do battle with a freight train in a tunnel. It lashed out once more, catching her on the side and slamming her into the other wall, but Madison retaliated with a double-bladed sideswipe that sliced off the appendage it had used to attack her. It recoiled, hissing, but she pressed her attack further, pushing off the wall and slashing at whatever bits of it she could see.

Madison didn't let up - she kept hacking away, grimly, but the fog closed in behind her. Suddenly there was a coil of mist around her waist, squeezing powerfully; she gasped and tried to cut at the constricting fog. When it finally let her go, she tumbled onto the floor, chest heaving as she desperately tried to draw breath.

It loomed over her, raking at her legs, but Madison tucked and rolled, coming up beneath what she hoped was its vulnerable belly, driving both swords straight upwards. "Get the ******** out, pika," she snarled. The blades jolted as they met resistance.
The beast thrashed, and Madison was slammed into a wall for the third time in as many minutes, but with a fading howl the creature dissipated, leaving only traces of grey in its wake. The Death Hunter slumped, wincing as she sheathed one sword, putting her free hand to her side. Something felt cracked in there.
Are you all right? Kouki asked, nervously.
"I will be, pika," she said, slowly pushing herself upright and moving down the hallway towards the door. She was under no illusions: without the boost from the runic headband, that thing could easily have killed her. She wasn't going to take any more chances today. "Let's get out of here, pika."
The serpent-sword radiated agreement, settling protective mental coils around her.
