Acacia clenched her teeth, and then the pain was gone and her vision cleared. She could see again. She felt weak and heavy, and exhausted. Banzai was standing there still as stone and confused looking, and Lyric, of all soquili, was asking her what she needed.
"Raspberry leaves," she explained quietly what they looked like and where to find them. They weren't that far away. "Be quick!" She was concerned with the pain, but also with Lyric being away for too long, the little one could get into a lot of trouble.
She paced back and forth, clenching her teeth. "Banzai," she called tenatively. "Banzai, " she cried more urgently, trying to get his attention.

Banzai continued to stand frozen in Terror until Acacia's words cut through the fog like a knife. He shook his head, trying to clear the thoughts from his mind. His mate needed him and he had to do what ever he could to help her. Right now that was all that mattered.
"What.." He gulped in air, trying to steady himself. "What should I do?"He was still afraid of what was about to happen, but he was prepared to do what was necessary as well.
The filly nodded, fear in her eyes as she looked at the mare. If this was what having foals was, she wasn't ever having any of her own.
Lyric listened to every word that Acacia told her. She knew she mustn't mess this up. She had to get the exact leaves that she was instructed to get or she'd be in trouble. Quickly, she ran off in the direction the mare had told her. Luckily for her, the raspberries were in full bloom and the leaves were quite easy to find.
She surveyed the plant as she came to it, making sure that it was EXACTLY as Acacia had described to her, before gingerly pulling a few leaves. Certain that she had what she needed, Lyric galloped back to her father and Acacia.

Acacia let out another scream as the foals kicked. She wasn't sure if she was going to want to do this again. How could one careless act end up this way? How cou--"BANZAI!"

It had been hours, but it had felt like days until she'd finally given birth to three perfectly perfect foals. She'd laid them in the basket, and then laid down panting and tired. She looked up at Banzai, who'd been of so much help (not at first). He loved her and he had stayed beside her when lesser stallions would have left.
But poor Lyric...she'd seen a lot. Hopefully this wouldn't scar her too bad. It's scared Acacia enough herself, but as they'd laid them in the baskets...as she's seen them, she knew she'd do it all over again.
She loved them already.
"Thank you," she whispered to the befuddled love of her life and his daughter.

That settled it. Lyric was definitely NOT having foals. Sure they were adorable as they lay in their baskets, but the pain Acacia had gone through didn't seem worth it to her. Curious, she crept closer to take a peek. She paused for a moment, making sure her father wouldn't yell at her, and then peered in to have a good look.
There were so tiny! She didn't think she ever could have been that little. Sure she knew she wasn't grown yet, but she was certainly much bigger than these were. The baskets had to stay shut she knew, but it was hard to resist opening them. Maybe just a peek...
The last several hours seemed like an eternity to Banzai and likely even longer still to his mate. Just watching the pain she went through had caused him to wince in horror as all he could do was stand beside her. He couldn't remember ever having been more proud of Acacia. She might have been in pain, but she had pulled through it better than he ever could have.
Gently, he lowered his muzzle to hers and gave her a loving nuzzle. "You did good." He told her, hardly noticing his own daughter as she crept her way towards the baskets. "All three looked to be healthy and I know you'll make a great mother. You already do so well with Lyric." Even though these foals were not his, he intended to take care of them as they were. It wasn't just blood that made someone family.
Banzai was about to speak again when he caught Lyric out of the corner of his eye. She had her nose to one of the baskets and was just about to lift the lid off. "Lyric!" He shouted to the filly. "You keep away from those. They need to stay safe and warm in there." Reluctantly, he left Acacia's side to scold his daughter.
"I know you want to see them," His voice was much softer now that the initial panic was over. "You'll just have to wait like the rest of us though. If the foals aren't kept safe and warm they could get sick and die." His voice, while soft, still held a bit of firmness to it. He wanted to be sure that Lyric fully understood the potential danger.

Acacia leaned into his neck as he nuzzled her. She watched him go over to the baskets with Lyric, his voice soft but firm. Her mate, her foals father, well one of their fathers. Three of them.
All the pain of the past, all the things she struggled with seemed like nothing when she'd finally seen them. "Lyric," she called to the young foal. "This is your first job as big sister, to take care of them now when they can't themselves. Can you do that?"
She stood up to Banzai and nuzzled him, thinking back on last night--the night before the rest of their lives and how he had given her the necklace. She wondered if he was thinking of it to?
