"Yo, Austin speaking," Austin said, sounding like a rougher version of Roch--until the sound of Roch laughing came in loud and clear from the background. "What?" Austin demanded. "Jack, boil, you sound like a hahyena."
"You just said yo!" Roch said. "You never say yo!"
"Oh for cryin' out loud--" Austin muttered. "Hello?"

Danny could hear Roch's voice in the phone, but it was mumbled and in the background until a sudden shuffle of movements, and then a spike of clarity.
"Roch!" she said into the phone, holding it closer to her ear, "Where are you? You were on the islands and then I didn't see you and then I went in my room and then I came out and then I kept checking for you but you were never here and you said you wouldn't leave and I thought you were dead or something but Monica said you were sick but you don't sound sick and YOU SAID YOU WOULDN'T LEAVE AGAIN."

"I'm just in town," Roch said a bit blankly. "I ain't that far away, but my phone gets lousy reception down here, and I was hearin' voices, y'know how it is--but on the other hand, my bike's almost finished!"
He'd been yelled at already, okay?

Danny frowned and worriedly said, "Are you okay? You're okay right? I mean voices aside and stuff ..." She looked down. Yes, she did know exactly how it was. It was terrifying to the tenth degree.
"Bike? What bike?" Danny wasn't aware that Roch had a bike. He probably didn't even know how to ride it- he probably still had training wheels! What a loser.

"Mmmm, well Granddad wanted to make up for the whole kidnapping thing, so he let me borrow his motorcycle to get my license, and when I got it I stole silver seeds from my old man who stole them from granddad and bought myself a kit, I guess you could call it. So I got a bike. Wanna go to Los Muertes with me for summer break? You're gonna need a ride, though," Roch said. His dad was glaring at him, he ignored it.

Danny scratched her ear idly as she spoke into the phone. "Of course I wanna go! ... Why can't I just ride with you? Your butt isn't that big Roch."
She thought for a moment, then added, "On second thought, maybe it is."

"Cuz I figured I'd drag Rikki and Amrita and maybe a few others along, too," he said. "We're talkin' a full out Hob vacation. Y'just gotta provide your own transportation, otherwise the bikes will fall over from the weight."

Danny gasped. "I mean I know you'd take them too but ... you didn't even think to ask me Roch?" She wibbled a little over the phone, apparently deeply hurt by this.

"Danny... I just did," he said a bit blankly. "It was one of those 'obviously' things, okay? Party road trip? Danny's coming. See?" he said with a shrug. "Gramps is probably coming."
"Like hell he is," Austin said. Roch shot him a dirty look, then rolled his eyes.
"Course he'll probably disappear the moment we get there to flirt with pretty ladies," Roch added with a shrug.

Danny's smile got a bit wider as Roch said she was included. "I dunno, d'you think-" She was about to say something about skipping school, but just then a group of gnomes surrounded her, pointing and saying angry things about Roch's dorm. One of them was definitely staring directly at her chest, not that Danny noticed.
"Uhhhh Roch ... I gotta call you back!" She threw the phone in her pocket, and started running before they took her to the princess corner.
