He didn't look at her, but his hand went over, reaching for hers. "Mitzi... I... don't think its smart," he said quietly. "I don't think I should even be here, but--" He muttered something dark. "This will go away. I gotta keep believing that. I'm stronger than--"
No he wasn't. If it had taken over Riley--if this was what had happened to her--the strongest female he knew--then he wasn't strong enough. But he wasn't about to tell her that. "That," he said finally.

She didn't notice him reaching for her until she felt his hand on hers; she took it, squeezing gently. "I don't care. You don't have to be alone with this." She sighed, her heart aching as she listened to him, and finally she looked back over at the boil. "It will. It has to," she reassured him.
