He didn't sound too happy about it. He couldn't help but feel sorry for him, to want to fix it... but it wasn't like he really knew anything about the man's life, nor as if he had a magic wand he could wave to make him happy. Not everyone got to do the job they wanted to do, to live the life they wanted to lead; those who did were a lucky minority.

Dith sipped his coffee.

"I'm a doctor," he said, setting the cup down again, "trauma surgeon, though currently having a bit of a career break; I realised I hadn't had a holiday in about ten years, which isn't exactly the healthiest thing ever." He did not miss 80 hour weeks, but he did miss the work itself. Still, you couldn't have your cake and eat it. Dith ate some cake.

Seth would have only been annoyed at Dith's pity anyway. Despite it all, he did still have a small measure of pride, even if it had been whittled down significantly. He just happened to be one of the unlucky ones. There was no telling if Seth would ever find happiness. He'd thought he had found it, but was sorely mistaken. Not only that, he had worked his whole life toward this goal. And what did he have to show for it? Nothing. Even though he'd essentially got what he wanted... it wasn't what he wanted anymore. Life was fickle like that. It was depressing to say the least.

The brunette hummed thoughtfully at Dith's career of choice. The fact that this man was a doctor meant that he had to be well educated and actually intelligent. Especially since he was a surgeon. Not just any idiot could do such delicate work. "Hmm, mid-life crisis?" he asked. If Dith was going to get nosey, then Seth had the right to do the same thing.

Dith swallowed the cake, sipped some coffee, and pondered; TMI, evasive, or something in between? He wasn't really all that good at evasive, so it would have to be one of the other two. "Not in so many words," he shrugged his huge shoulders, "the 'mid-life' bit was rather incidental to the whole mess. To cut a long story short my best friend who'd been like my brother dropped out of my life leaving me just a note to say I wouldn't hear from him again, and thanks to subsequent depression my wife got sick of me and divorced me. Tried to distract myself from all of it with work, but that didn't work, so I came out here to try to sort my head out, which seems to have worked out quite well actually."

Dith took another sip of coffee and inspected Seto over the rim of the cup, wondering what the reaction to the middling version would be, and whether or not he should have given the TMI just to see what would happen.

Seth wasn't sure what he had expected, but such a straight forward answer wasn't really one of them. Again he was left speechless and just sort of stared in astonishment at Dith as he made his confessions of a life that sounded like it had gone to crap. ... Not all that dissimilar to his own really.

"Hmph... maybe that's what I should do," Seth then said in a barely audible mutter as he lifted his coffee cup to his lips again and took a sip, his eyes looking to the side. Perhaps burying himself in work wouldn't work after all. Isn't that what he'd been doing for half of his life? Even before his recent crisis? It hadn't done a blasted thing for him either.

"Do Russian women typically do that? Get sick of their men, I mean." That would really explain a lot of things. This all going on the assumption that Dith's wife was Russian as well. The slightly imploring sound of his voice indicated that he had a reason for asking that.

He almost answered right away with a laugh and something flippant but... there was a tone to his voice. Sad? Desperate, but not quite the right word. Wanting? Yearning? It came up suddenly, about Russian women dumping people. A Russian woman had left him? Seemed possible. Dith sighed instead of laughing and shook his head, for now focused too much on the past and on the apparent plight of this stranger to make any connections.

"My wife was English," he said simply. "I can't speak out against making a change though, as I've said. It's a luxury I've been able to afford, never did have expensive tastes so I've got enough to live on for a good while.... If you were going to head off and try something different, what would you like to do?"
PostPosted: Sun Apr 22, 2012 12:42 pm

"Ah," Seth replied to the fact that Dith's wife was in fact, not Russian. Perhaps it was just a woman thing then. He wouldn't even presume to understand the opposing gender.

Again he was thoughtful as he considered what he might possibly do if he was able to take off and do what he wanted. "I don't know," he answered honestly. "Unfortunately, I don't think its a luxury that I can afford. So there is little use dwelling on it."

Dith poked his cake and wondered at that niggle again. Was it...? No. Surely not. He looked at Seto and then down into his coffee. Seto. Had she once commented that...? No. He took a drink of coffee and tried to avoid putting things together. "Well... a new hobby? It's not the same as getting away, but a shake up to your evening routine, doing new things and meeting new people and so on?" Seto was not a common name around here. A Russian woman, it seemed, had left him. No way.

"Maybe," Seth said with that distant tone again. "Although I've never been very good at getting along with people," and there was a tinge of regret in his voice. He had pushed most people away throughout his life, to keep himself from getting hurt. Which only led to him not having any real friends. And when he finally started opening up to someone... they left him. And he experienced the very thing he had tried to avoid. It was a cruel world.

"Someone did tell me that I should spend more time with my Pokemon." Which was probably true. If anything, he shouldn't alienate himself from the creatures that were under his care.

"Pokemon are good," agreed Dith, who was still trying really hard not to infer anything. "I've had my Esepon since I was... six? I think? He has always been a good companion for me, and I've started to gather a few more since I came out here too."

Probably going by Seto now.

How many Setos who had been dumped by Russian women could there be in Kodo? Seriously!

"Espeon is a good Pokemon," Seth remarked distractedly. "I was about that age when I got my Cyndaquil. She's now a Typhlosion."

He was wonderfully oblivious to Dith's internal musings. There was no telling how he might have reacted if he knew exactly what the other man was thinking. Or if he knew that Dith was actually acquainted with a certain red head that had broken his heart.

Dith looked down into his coffee. Yup. Had to be. He couldn't help some sympathy for the man now he'd spoken to him. It wasn't that Nadja had painted him in an especially awful light or anything but... well he had drawn conclusions. He still thought the man was an idiot for not seeing that she was unhappy and fixing things before it was too late but hello pot, this is the kettle, you are black. It seemed that they had each made similar mistakes, though no doubt for their own reasons.

To be fair it seemed that Nadja hadn't communicated her dissatisfaction any more than his ex had but, he couldn't shake the feeling of; you idiot, you were dating Nadezhda Ivanovna Volkova, and you blew it. It was silly of him to think like that, they were only friends after all even if she was pretty great; anything else was impossible and any thoughts he had on the matter were probably just rebound, she was the only woman even vaguely close to his own age he regurlarly interacted with after all.

Dith sighed slightly and cut off another piece of cake with his fork but ended up prodding it rather than eating it, his usually smiling mouth pressing into a flat line. "Da, Viktor's good," he agreed vaguely, keeping his eyes on the cake. Everything would be so much easier in life if you could have hindsight beforehand... but on the other hand if he had known, had patched things up, he wouldn't be here now and... and what he was doing here was important.

Dith pushed away the gloom, and tried to push away any negative thoughts about Seto too. Expression brightening slightly and he said; "So what are you interested in, in the way of pokemon I mean. You don't strike me as a coordinator type."

Seth knew he was an idiot, he certainly didn't need to be told that. That was part of the problem. He had realized his mistakes, and even said so in his letter to her, but it was apparently too late. He had blown it. He had been angry with Nadja, but in reality, most of that anger was directed at himself. For not being better, for not being good enough, for being too blind and inexperienced to see what was going on before it happened. But he had tried, dammit. He'd gone farther for that woman than any other person. But it was still not enough.

As far as Seth was concerned, he had worked himself into a deeper hole than he was able to get out of. He wanted to change, but the man simply didn't know how. Perhaps his lot in life was to live a miserable and lonely existence. He normally wasn't one for self pity, but again... he just wasn't himself.

"I don't know," Seto replied honestly. "I was into training at one point, but then I gained more responsibilities and was unable to keep up with it. I don't really have much of an interest anymore." He didn't have much of an interest for anything anymore, really. He was a rather useless human being. Both to Team Rocket and to society in general.

Poor miserable b*****d. He remembered that far too well to be angry on Najda's behalf right now. Loneliness. Horrible loneliness. A familiar presence gone, a space that should be full empty... and though one party was never entirely to blame, blaming yourself. What did you fill the emptiness with? Work? Drink? Both? That had certainly been him, both to far too great a degree.... Was that what Seto was doing? He didn't know, he was no psychic, he was probably just partially projecting his own feelings onto the man, partially just inferring normal human nature. You had somebody great, and because you weren't what they needed they left, and so you hated yourself and had to do whatever you could to distract yourself.

s**t he missed Anna.

"Everyone needs time for themselves," Dith said quietly, looking down into his coffee again. "You can't... you can't just work forever and do nothing more. That's no life, even if you love your job you need more. We are not creatures meant to do one thing all of the time. We need variety. Perhaps you should try to make time for it again, or take up something new. Music? Sport? Something that's beyond your job, different to it. I'm sure you don't really want a stranger giving you advice but, well, I am an interfering sort who can't help sticking his nose in wherever he goes."
PostPosted: Tue Apr 24, 2012 6:23 am

"Perhaps," Seto muttered as he took another sip of his coffee, not sounding entirely convinced. He didn't really want to do anything. He'd completely lost interest in the things he liked to do. Besides, working was what he did best. That had been his life for the past 20 years, working with little or no time for himself. Forced to undergo rigorous advanced schooling during his childhood and teenage years to prepare for a career in business. Then upon entering Team Rocket, he spent most of his time training his Pokemon and himself and furthering his education. Sure it had made him a valuable asset to Team Rocket, but it had also made him a barely tolerable person. He had wanted to better himself, but now it was all meaningless.

This man made it all sound so easy, but in truth it wasn't. There had been moments he'd considered training his Pokemon again... or even taking up the games he'd played in the few precious moments of spare time in his life. But he didn't have the energy or the will to pick them up again. But there was no harm in trying again. A part of him hated to have his Pokemon sit there, unused and unloved.

Dith was indeed being nosey, and at one point Seth would have taken great offense, but he didn't seem to care much now. "There are a lot of things I should do and should have done." He was a man of many regrets now. "You make it sound so simple."

"It is simple," Dith shrugged, "but simple isn't the same as easy; it's not complicated to run a marathon after all. It's never easy to make changes to a routine that's become ingrained, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Nothing worthwhile ever comes without effort, as I have no doubt you know."
