Aulus gave another rueful smile and shrugged, his shoulders breaking the surface of the water with the motion. "It is funny, in retrospect. I was planning on getting something done to his pokeball to make sure he can't just pop out and run amok when he feels like it. I guess that's something useful I can do before I get back on duty... how're you doing with Neph by the way? I've never really had to train a really unruly pokemon before; Red's a bit wilful but easily persuaded to do stuff by telling her it'll impress Odette and all the others listen to me very well, guess I've been lucky until now."

"Funny 's it sounds, he does sound kind o' dangerous..." Tambrey nodded "So 's probably a wise idea." Erm. Neph. The grunt bit at her lip for a second. "Well... I haven't actually tried t' train her since we got back, though she seemed, maybe, less... uh, spirited when I last took her out of the pokeball t' check on her... Then again, I kind o' had them all out then, so... y'know.. 'back up'." She blinked a little; Red was his bird but... "Odette?"

"Mmmh, that's true," Aulus shrugged, "Maybe I'll get some advice from one of the expert trainers." If he wasn't too proud which, he had to admit, was a distinct possibility. "Yea though, Odette; Claire's Pidgeot. Red happens to think she's the most beautiful creature in existence, and is constantly trying to impress her, and to be her knight in shining... feathers? I guess? Works out well for me in any case; Red's not all that bright really, not as thick as some, but not bright enough to know when she's being manipulated."

Tambrey wasn't really sure who she'd consider an expert trainer to ask... Maybe Frost or Faleen; they both seemed to have a really good leash on their pokemon and seemed able to direct them even when the pokemon seemed rather terrifying and inclined to be untrustworthy. "Couldn't hurt." She chimed anyway, though perhaps finding it a little hard to believe he would be going and seeking advice.
"Huh." That was interesting, and fairly useful. She knew her pokemon had some attachments beyond with each other, but she doubted any of them could be used in the same way. Sure, Palu, Pygi and Swiftwing were basically a family but Palu was a proud bird and Pygi wouldn't understand the idea of 'doing something to impress' in all likelihood. "I've seen Odette; 's a pretty bird. Don't think Palu was too impressed, but... well. Palu's Palu; she's not much 'f a 'friend-maker'. That does sound useful though; 's a pity 's none like that for Discord."

"Yea.... Pity."
Lifting his arms up onto the side of the pool Aulus looked at the ceiling and considered how absurd his life was these days. Here he was talking to a nice woman, comfortably, not worried about what she thought about him or that she might be trying to use him. Here he was, and she was, in a criminal organization. Here they were not talking about everything that had happened to them over the last month, because what was there to say? It was all so huge and....
"Tam. Why did you join Team Rocket?"

Had she been able to hear Aulus' thoughts, she might have completed that last one with 'painful'. The question caught her slightly off guard and she nearly lost her slight grip on the poolside, though it might just look as though she was adjusting her position for comfort. "Uh. Well, i's a little complicated." Instantly, Tam's brain informed her that was a lie- it was straight forward and childish, she'd been 'young', though it was still only about a year and a half ago really- and she blushed slightly because of it. Hm. It was Aulus; he never really seemed all that judgmental and she certainly trusted him. "No, sorry, that's wrong; i's not complicated at all." She sighed and admitted. "If y' kept an ear or an eye out around university, you'd possibly find someone offering something you wanted or needed... Express frustration with a lack of... opportunity to do certain things or maybe y'd need money, someone might be there with 'a pretty good deal'. Access to scientific equipment and knowledge, opportunity to travel and see rare pokemon /with/ a pay packet." She shrugged, just slightly then, some regret in there, audible though hidden in weary acceptance. "Of course, 's a more positive spin on the truth 'f it and once you're in, the way out's not really the way out at all." She paused, then smiled, a little ruefully. "D'you mind if I ask the same?"

Aulus sighed heavily, and then gave a short laugh. "Sounds about as sensible as my reasons...." Breaking eye contact, he looked up at the ceiling again. "I'd met Claire a few times, and apparently she decided I was worth recruiting. She offered me adventure, excitement, involvement with rare pokemon and... I was getting short of money, no real way to make more, and I was too proud and angry to go back to my family so I accepted. I feel like I should regret it more than I do, you know?" Aulus looked back down at Tambery and gave a shrug. "We do all these bad things but... I'm happy here, mostly. Happier than I've ever been anywhere else. I guess that probably says a lot about me."
So long as he was personally happy who cared what nasty things he had to do to others? It was all about him, right? Selfishness was at the core of human nature, wasn't it?

Tambrey actually followed his gaze upward toward the ceiling and found herself smiling a little differently. "If it says a lot about you, 'm willing t' bet it, or it's starting to, have regular conversations about a lot 'f us..." There was a small amount of laughter in her voice now. "Never was all that popular at school, uni, where ever... 'M still a little bit 'f a loner maybe, but the people here, surprising as it should be, are probably the best I've met; they get under your skin and before you know it, y' care that someone might not be coming back from somewhere." The grunt, deciding the conversation was worth a seat for, lifted herself out of the pool, turned and sat, dangling her legs into the water. She pushed her goggles up, keeping her hair back, so that eye contact was a little easier, even if some things were a little fuzzy like that. "I'm happier here too, despite how I got here and knowing... y'know, the 'exit' policy, I'm still happier to be with friends now."

"...Yeah, me neither. Well," Aulus paused and frowned a bit, "I mean... I hung out with plenty of people but I never got close to anyone, I was too worried about my image." He still was around a lot of people - most people - which was stupid. Playing the tough guy, being an arsehole, had never made him happy. He couldn't help doing it though it was just... most people were arseholes. Guilty until proven innocent was a safer way to live.
"Humans aren't meant to live cut off from other humans," he added after a few moments. "Having real relationships... yea. It's nice." That was quite a lot of talking about feeling from him but... well it was Tam, and so it was alright, right? He thought so.

"I had classmates more than friends." Tambrey nodded, apparently understanding the idea of hanging out with people but not being close. "That sort o' thing seemed maybe a little harder than being just... on your own?" She fished a little- that was how it had felt to her; easier sneaking off to read on her own. She did note that it was somewhat unusual to hear Aulus speaking this way; of course, there were some things about him that, even if he'd tried to hide them, they'd been a little... visible to her, spending time in that cell if they hadn't been much during the sessions before. "It is nice. And it's nice t' see." She agreed and continued after a small pause. "You and Hayes seem really close."

"Oh. Uh, yea." Aulus smiled warmly. "I was kind of standoffish with him when we were assigned as partners but we ended up bonding over Doctor Who and co-op and... yeah. He was chilled enough to put up with me being spiky to begin with. Never had a friend like him before." He felt kind of close to everyone who'd been in that cell but Alex.... Yeah, he was special, possibly more so than anyone else in the world right now but he didn't feel he ought to say that, to anyone. They'd think it was weird, even his cellmates probably, they probably wouldn't accept that yes it was platonic thanks so much. He certainly shouldn't let Claire know. Or Alex. He'd awkwardly said he loved him via email, no need load on any more feelings talking, especially something like that. The most important person in the world to him ought to be a family member, or his girlfriend, not his best friend... right?
Now feeling rather uncomfortable Aulus tried to think of something else to say. He failed.

That was a good thing to see, that smile; it was warm and different to the ones before, and very different to the expressions they'd been sharing in the cell. It felt so odd to have been back any time at all, when such simple things still seemed so fresh and pleasant. "Heh. Doctor Who's a pretty good agent f'r bonding; 's like glue." Tam' smiled in kind. She didn't seem bothered or concerned with whatever Aulus' and Hayes' relationship was beyond them being 'close' as friends at least. "That's... I want t' say lucky, but I don't really think 's as much t' do with luck when 's people involved. It's good, anyway, t' have a friend like that."

"I dunno," Aulus shrugged, "I guess there's luck to it like... well getting assigned together to start with, and then us hitting on something we could talk about right away before I could do something stupid and pettily cruel." He'd picked on kids like Alex in school... but then again he'd picked on pretty much everyone in school, especially if they were bigger than he was. "Anyway," he shrugged again, "it is, yeah.. and you guys, you know. All of us." He didn't feel the need to specify what he meant, or able to go into more detail.
"I was thinking of starting some combat classes for all of us once we're all up to it," he went on. "I could probably use an assistant who knows the basics, if you'd be up for that?"

Tambrey was a little surprised to hear Aulus claim that he would have done something cruel without provocation without something to talk about, but then she'd only really known him since meeting him in the Rec' Room whenever that had been now and gotten to know him better via training and, of course, the cells. She smiled though, as he concluded the thought. Then blinked as he talked of starting a class. It sounded a good idea, and she knew it was close to something he'd wanted to do before. "Well, sure, though I've, uh, never done that sort of thing before..." Then again, he'd be doing the teaching and she /did/ know the basics now. "I would. It sounds fun and it'd definitely be useful."

"Heh," Aulus shrugged, "well I'd never taught anyone before I started with you either, and seems I coped okay. It'll just be us lot anyway, so nobody will laugh at us if we ******** up... well not a lot anyway." He'd feel better knowing all of them at least had a basic idea of how to defend themselves. Well, there was Jerome of course, he wouldn't imply the tattooed man couldn't handle himself in a fight, but formal training in proper techniques was a bit different to being good in a brawl or street fight with other untrained thugs. He probably shouldn't just have thought 'thugs' but at least he hadn't said it aloud.
"We should all train our pokemon together too," Aulus added after a moment, "y'know we could probably form ourselves into a right crack team, all with different skills and knowledge and pokemon and that."
