History: A happy swim in the sea off the east coast of Kodo nearly resulted in KO being devoured by this large and perpetually ravenous shark. Fortunately he was able to capture it and has warily added it to his team. He is currently trying to pluck up the courage to learn to ride the toothy beast.

With help from Faleen, and a lot of effort on his part, KO has brought the toothy terror under control and now feels comfortable using him on missions. Doesn't mean he likes the brute mark you.

Personality: Baron doesn't talk much... well, doesn't talk at all really. Presumably he can but he shows no interest in any of KO's other pokemon. He is interested in eating and swimming, and that's about it.

After that first training session with Faleen he had been working with the vicious shark. Carefully. Very carefully. Having the new pool was a relief; it was a much more controlled environment, stopped the living mass of teeth from getting behind him. These days he could get it to follow basic commands but as yet the beast was unreliable in battle which was, obviously, less than ideal.

No way he was spending the rest of his life as a grunt and that meant he needed to get himself noticed. In turn getting noticed meant a team of pokemon that would listen to him and proven ability and loyalty in the field. This was also less than idea so far as he was concerned especially after the mission he'd just acted as a medic on; four of them had nearly died and two of them had lost body parts.

He was not going to be a grunt forever though, no way no how; he was going to have his own room and a bathroom he could at least mainly control.

Of course just declaring this was no good, he was going to have to work for it and spend time training that he would rather spend relaxing or down in the labs.

So it was that, with regret, KO turned down the offer of hitting the town on a night out and headed to the training rooms to seek an opponent.

Height: A fairly large Crobat
Build: Chunky
Colouration: Unique, possibly melanistic

History: Late one night after many drinks in Camphoreon KO had managed to drop his wallet in a dark ally and, drunk as he was, was having no luck finding it. The snide voice pointing out his failure from the shadows didn't help his temper, in fact he was sure that his headache was coming back. When he replied to its rude comments the voice expressed surprise that it was being understood and a large Golbat flapped out of the shadows. The two looked at once another for a while and then KO said "Ooooh, riiiiight, so poison or flying?" and then laughed a lot.

The Golbat, whose name was Bruce thanks to a former trainer who had released him, showed KO where his wallet was and agreed to go with him. Having a trainer again sounded nice and one that could actually understand him was all the better.

Personality: Bruce is made of sarcasm and schadenfreude. He loves to laugh at the misfortune of others and is always quick to point out people's flaws and mistakes. Bruce is quite a sharp cookie and used to doing what he wants rather than what he's told so he'll often ignore KO's instructions if he thinks he has a better idea, a trait KO is trying to work out of him without much success so far.

History: KO stole Mistress along with an Audino and a Deerling from an artist during a training mission. He opted to keep the Flabebe as he lacked a Fairy type.

Personality: Mistress or 'Missy' as she was formerly called is currently scared of just about everything and completely heartbroken that her trainer apparently traded her away or sold her. She doens't like Team Rocket but she is smart enough to realise that she's got no way out and so she is doing her very best to please KO.

History: A lab creation, requested by KO to give him a) a psychic type and b) a fairy type he felt was more promising that his flabebe for future field work.

Personality: Imperator is a self-contained sort with a dry sense of humour and a strong protective instinct. Newly created as he is, he is still getting to grips with who he is but it's clear that he sets a lot of store by 'family' and that he's willing to work hard for the good of his family.

When an elite gave you advice it paid to listen, especially when they were talking about their own field. KO frowned and took a sip of his drink as he pored over the lists of moves that his pokemon could potentially learn. "Okay, what do you think of swapping Thunderbolt out for Discharge?" he asked with a glance over to Duke.

"Chuu?" Duke shrugged eloquently and sipped his own drink.

"Well it has the potential to damage your allies if they're too close buuut if you were in the middle of a group of enemies it would be perfect." He took another sip of the vodka and coke, making a mental note to get some slightly less awful vodka next time he left base. "It also has a much higher chance of causing paralysis and it's just as accurate as Thunderbolt... I'd call that a yes then." Volt Tackle was too powerful to give up, Quick Attack was useful and so was Thunderwave. "So we'll work on that."

Next on his list was Regent but he didn't really want to change the Umbreon's moves for now, they were all support based so that meant that if all his other pokemon fainted he could be in trouble, but on the other hand how often did he work alone on missions? Exactly. If all his fighters fell then Regent would support a teammate's pokemon instead.

"Okay... Cojiro, not going to be taking him on serious missions now I have better options." He might get rid of the Pidgey but he did make a handy alarm clock so maybe not. "Countess?... Good for now I think, Curse really came in handy against that Articuno and I like the other moves too. Now, Viceroy...." KO tried to sip again, found his glass empty and moved to refill it. Swap Fire Fang for Flame Burst?" Flame Burst was a special move and Viceroy's special attack was slightly lower but on the other hand it was a very slightly more powerful attack and had the advantage of doing a small amount of damage to nearby foes. "Okay, Flame Burst it is." Kaiser? Already had a multi target move, as did Baron. "Bruce.... Air Cutter? The info here says it cuts through a horde well... and humm, I don't think we really need Supersonic as we already have Confuse Ray with Regent, right?"

"Chuu." Duke shrugged again but then nodded, he didn't claim to understand all this but it sounded sensible?

"Okay, so Air Cutter.... Aerial Ace is useful and I don't want to get rid of Hypnosis either. Bite's okay for now I suppose but as he gets stronger I suppose we'll have to look at it again." He felt like he should be giving the Crobat a poison type move but he didn't want to give up a dark move for it, dark attacks were handy. Maybe get rid of Aerial Ace later? Unfailing accurate though it was Claire had advocated balance and all that. Maybe he could get a guaranteed hit move for one or two of the others instead. "As for the other two...." The fairy types were too new to learn much really. "We'll come back to it," KO decided, closing down his laptop and getting to his feet with a yawn and a stretch. Tomorrow was soon enough to start training, for now he felt as though a nice hot shower and then sleep were in order. Now, were there any Agents who he'd done a favour for recently? Use of a private shower sounded might more attractive than using the communal grunt bathroom.

Still pondering this KO collected his towel and bathrobe and turned to leave the room.

Once he'd gone Duke hopped up onto the desk to pilfer the rest of his drink.

When he woke up he couldn't have said exactly what had been happening in the dream, all he knew was that he jerked suddenly to consciousness with the certainty that waking at all shouldn't have been possible. He sat up with his heart racing, hands shaking, and skin clammy with cold sweat. He rubbed his face. He was alive, wasn't he? He was, but he felt- felt- What? The covers were tangled around his legs as though he'd been thrashing in his sleep, he kicked them away irritably and got to his feet to fumble for the lightswitch on the wall near his bed. His trembling fingers found it after a few moments and the lights flickered on, forcing him to squint as sudden bright artificial light replaced the pitch blackness.

Once his eyes adjusted to the light a little he looked around his room, trying to reassure himself of reality by focusing on concrete things. There was his bed, he'd made the new linen set last week to replace the awful standard issue stuff they gave you. There was the empty bed, still not yet claimed by a roommate. There was his little desk with his laptop and his sewing machine jostling for space. There was the mirror. The mirror. He rubbed his face again and crossed the room to stand in front of it; there he was, pale and with his hair in a mess. There was the purple knot of scar tissue over his heart. He reached up to touch it; it was raised and twisted and awful but a scar, healed. He was alive now so what did it matter what had happened before? He closed his eyes and exhaled slowly but the dread cold wouldn't go away. He needed to get out of here and- and- and just do something, something that would distract him from the sick twisting feeling inside him.

He turned away from the mirror to find his uniform but the image of the scar remained burned into his mind's eye.

He shouldn't be here.

"Well, well, well." KO walked a slow circle around the Meganium, inspecting it from every angle before coming to a halt in front of it. Now this- this was something, a truly glorious feat of engineering! It almost made him wish he were in genetics himself, just so that he could say he had been involved in the creation of the creature.

A Meganium spliced with an Aurorus. The resulting creature stood far taller than the grass type it primarily took after yet shorter than the fossil pokemon called to mind by the crystal on its head and the ethereal sails that replaced the flower he had always found passé on Meganium. KO looked up into the mutant creature's eyes; it looked back down at him and blinked slowly, he didn't know what to make of its expression but it seemed placid enough and he had Viceroy at his back so he wasn't concerned that it might start to misbehave.

"I think I will call you.... Empress," KO decided aloud; she was certainly impressive enough to warrant the name. "You will be working for me, you understand?"

The Meganium blinked again but then, after a pause, she nodded.

"Good," KO nodded. "If you need to communicate anything specific to me you can tell Imperator, or Mistress if he's not around."

The Meganium remained silent and still for a few moments but then turned her head to Imperator, lowered it so as to be near eye level with him, and spoke.

<> Imperator translated, smiling slightly at his own pun; well nobody else was going to appreciate it so he might as well make the most of it himself.

"Ahh, so bright enough then." KO gave an approving nod. "Yes, Imperator is Psychic and Fairy, whereas Mistress is pure Fairy type. Now," KO rubbed his hands together and started to smirk, "let's see that special move of yours, shall we?" Oh he was going to enjoy showing this one off!

Notes resulting from a bottle of wine plus ?? cocktails.

Hydrogen.

how much do we spend on gas for all our vheicls? Lots presumably. How is the base actually powered? Don't now! Will ask.

But hydrogen = excellent fuel, very dense energy. Production from water works fine I suppose but we are Rockert! We can do better, exploit pokemon for progfit!

Consider biohydrogen production, very ineffiicnet because they juse use algae because of ethics! Ethics! Where would sciencebe if we always bothered with ethics?

Needed
- Old tanks
- Live water/grass pokemon Tissue samples, easier to request and intitally need to determine which spcies might react as required?
- Sun lamps/pokemon to keep up Sunny Day effects/similar.
- Equipment to monitor
- Equipment to capture gasses
- Space. Where? Request corner of lab? Storage space? Low risk project ∴ security not a priority.
- Less alcohol.
- More alochol?
- Advil for tomorrow

Some days later, with a little more clarity...

I hardly remember writing that but the ethanol and I were on to something.

A very rough introduction to a project proposal follows.

The problem with deriving hydrogen from algae is that photosynthesis in normal plants is highly inefficient which means that yields are always going to be low. Pokemon on the other hand are a different story, take Lotad for example which is capable of surviving on photosynthesis alone. Not so impressive you say? Consider that while all plants have to do is sit around, suck up water, and grow Lotad is fully mobile and battle capable battle capable is a stretch, think of a better way to phrase 'it runs around and fights purely on sunlight if required'.

This is just one example that illustrates the power and potential of photosynthesis in Pokemon. If we can isolate a pokemon which, like Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, will switch from the production of oxygen (normal photosynthesis for the uninitiated), to the production of hydrogen in the absence of sulfur then with some development we could not only have our own sustainable fuel supply but also a highly marketable product to sell through one cover organization or another. (Is the company that elite fronted still in business? The one with the sailor outfit and the awful attitude).

.... Writing here, extrapolate ...

...the enzyme responsible for the reaction is hydrogenase (an enzyme that catalyses the reversible oxidation of molecular hydrogen), which in the case of C. reinhardtii loses its function in the presence of oxygen. Depleting the level of sulfur available cuts off the algae's internal oxygen flow, allowing the hydrogenase an environment in which it can react which in turn causes the algae to produce hydrogen.

C. reinhardtii is not unique in this reaction, however nor is it universal; preliminary research will therefore be required to determine a species of Pokemon which possesses these properties. If a species cannot be identified it may be possible to introduce the capability via gene gun (ask Tambery for more information here, a lot more) .... successful specimens/samples can then be cloned in the normal manner, providing a steady supply of pokemon which are capable of producing large amounts of hydrogen with relatively little interference or resources required.

...

etc, continue after shift.

In between work, extra training with my pokemon, and my 'pet project' I haven't had much time to do a lot of anything else since almost new year, not quite that long I suppose.

I've made a lot of progress in that time however, in that I've eliminated all sampled grass pokemon as possibilities for the project. This isn't the end of the world, it just means that we're going to have to engineer a lot more than we might have if a pokemon species naturally switched over to Hydrogen production as required. I'm meeting with Tambery tomorrow, hopefully she will tell me what I want to here about the possibility of employing gene guns on this. Beyond that the subject's own production of hydrogenase will have to be shut down, and while we're at it we may as well engineer C. reinhardtii's to be more efficient (as Yacokailov et. al. did) to further increase the efficiency of photosynthesis and therefore increase the rate of Hydrogen production.

Training is going well as well, my Ralts and my Golbat have evolved and I've improved on the move sets of a few of my team as they've grown stronger. My Sharpeado is easier to control now, I still don't like the thing but we have mutual respect - I think - and that's good enough for my purposes.

Beyond that I haven't given myself a lot of time to think about anything, which might be for the best. Perhaps I'll feel better if this project comes off, it would certainly be a great achievement! Not particularly glamorous perhaps but very useful and when it comes to work that is - even I have to admit - more important.

My meeting with Tambery went much better than I could have hoped! She confirmed that employing a gene gun is feasible - new techniques developed to make it a little less damaging to cells - and not only that but she's given her approval to the project! This means I will have a little clean-lab to work in and some proper resources dedicated to the work, and I'll be able to call in assistance for the aspects I can't do myself. I know Tambery is very busy but I hope that she might find some time to tinker with me personally; I've missed working along side her, she's just so... affable, and genuinely enthusiastic about science, and good at what she does. I trust her too, both professionally and personally and it's not often I can say both of the same person. Not often I can say the latter at all.

I've felt strange since the mission to Kodo and I still do when I'm idle but this! This has given me something to really focus on again, something new! This is what I've been missing since... actually since I last worked on something with Tambery.

I am loath to admit it but I think I have a science crush on her.

What comes after the Hydrogen project?

Synth, I need to go back to that. With a successful project behind me I'm more likely to be granted further resources, and if I could have proper equipment to work on it I might be able to develop it into what it was supposed to be!

Given I now work for Team Rocket I think it makes more sense to focus on developing its effects on pokemon, I succeeded in essentially a combined X-Attack and X Sp. Atk but at the cost of the pokemon's (or human's) judgement and concentration. Lapses in judgement and focus in the field are unacceptable so I need to determine what was happening with the brain chemistry there before I can work on resolving the issue, tests subjects are fairly cheap around here so - again - if the Hydrogen project comes off I shouldn't have a problem requesting a few.

Once that's seen to I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be possible to make synth into a combined stat booster, that's a relatively long term plan but it's important to know where you're heading! If we could have a drug that boosted all of our pokemon's stats in one little hit we'd have a very nice edge of league trainers with their ridiculously lengthy drug development periods and ethical standards thereof; they're probably a decade or more off anything like this!

And now I remember why I joined Team Rocket, or at least why I'm glad I did.
