Danny looked alarmed as Rikki started undoing his chain belt, right there in the middle of the grass. Oh my Jack what was he doing. She placed her hand gently on Rikki's arm, to stop him.
"'Rikkiiiiii," she whined, "Not with everyone looking!" Jack why did he want to take his pants off NOW. She was all for changing in front of people- she did it all the time, but you couldn't do it for no reason!
A bird walked up to Danny, and she performed some sort of quick awkward bow, turning back to Rikki. The bird actually looked like it pitied her, and gave her his feather. "BIRD JUST A SECOND," she screeched at it. This bird must've been really nice, because it even stuck with her through that. Jackdamn.

Rikki looked at Danny like she was crazy. "I'm just taking my belt off. It scared the birds last time, I think, because it makes so much noise." As if to prove his point, he dropped his belt to the ground and ambled up to a nearby bird. The bird eyed him wearily, and bad him feel all around uncomfortable. He managed an awkward bow though, and the bird seemed to accept it. It didn't give him a feather, however.
"Hey, how come you got a feather?"

Ohhh. He didn't want to scare the bird! That was so thoughtful of him. Rikki was so good with animals!
What was she supposed to do next? Right right. Give the birdy water. Hmm.
Danny really didn't want to do that. The idea of pouring a glass of water just seemed scary. What if she missed? Oh Jack and if it got on her skin?
She decided to just point at the ginormous water barrel they'd set up. The bird seemed to get it, and went over to drink out of the barrel. It gave Danny enough time to steal another feather. Soon she would have a pretty birdy feather collection!!
"Maybe they're just grumpy today," she said, thinking of her bird yesterday. He'd been pretty grouchy. "D' you think they'll let us ride the birds?"

"They're not going to let you ride them," he laughed. If they had to bow to them and treat them so royally, there was no way they'd be allowed to use them as a mount. He watched Danny give her bird some water, but decided his birdy looked hungry.
He offered up a salty little cracker, and at first things were great. The bird nibbled it happily. But like with everything else in his life, he was only worthy for a few seconds of the bird's time and then it discovered an even tastier patch of grass, ignoring Rikki.

Danny noticed that the bird only nibbled on Rikki's cracker and then left him. "S'okay. I'm sure he'll come back'!" she said, giggling and turning back to her paper.
She awkwardly looked at the bird and said, "Um ... so do you like ..." She looked around, trying to find a subject. Her eyes fell on the cracker that still remained in Rikki's dark hands. "Crackers? Do you like them?"
Unlike the day before, the bird went absolutely insane. It started twittering and chirping like its head was going to blow off. Danny giggled and clapped, nodded and sighed at the appropriate parts. She even added the occasional comment like she was really talking to the bird. Honestly at this point, she probably did think she was part of the conversation.
Once all was said and done, the bird dropped a feather at her feet and gave an odd sort of bird-smile at her. Hahaha yay more featherssss!

... Rikki was a little insulted by this bird. He tilted his head at it and tried to figure out what the hell he was supposed to do. The instructor said to ask a question, sooo...
He stepped a little closer and bent over with his hands on his knees, trying to attract the adara's attention. When it glanced at him, he sputtered, "So uh, what's your favorite color?" The bird immediately perked up and went on trilling and epic about it's favorite color, and Rikki tried really hard to look like he was interested. He must have had some success, because at the end of the story the bird looked quite pleased, even if Rikki still didn't know it's favorite color.

Tell it a secret. Like what? What kind of secret would a bird even care about?
Danny thought long and hard about it, and eventually came up with an answer. She leaned really close to her bird companion and said, "Okay I have a secret..." The bird trilled and made little noises, clearly excited. It leaned closer and looked her in the eyes expectantly.
"I ...
....
........
.........
am a fire demon."

The bird didn't seem that impressed. Just shook his head and dropped another feather, walking away. Danny thought her secret was pretty damn legit though. She picked up the dropped feather and walked over to Rikki, sticking the feather behind his ear, and then proceeding to hug him from behind, her hands interlocking on his stomach. She set her head on his shoulder gently and said, "Any luck?"

A secret. Hngh. He sat in the grass and stared at the adara for a while, not sure what to tell it. By the time he'd figured out a good one, Danny had come up and wrapped her arms around him. He smiled at her uncertainly, shrugged, and then turned to spill his guts to his new feathery friend.
"I used to have a brother." The bird tilted it's head, as if slightly interested, so Rikki took that as a cue to continue. "He disappeared about ten years ago. I don't know where he went." There was a lengthy pause, filled by a soft trill from the adara, but otherwise the bird waited patiently. "Sometimes I think that maybe he got turned into a weapon by the hunter guys that keep bothering Halloween, but I try not to think about it often. It scares me, honestly." He gave a sad, pathetic smile, and the adara cooed sympathetically. It seemed pleased and humbled by the secret, because it gently placed a feather in front of him and then walked away, as if to give him some peace.

As soon as Rikki said "brother," Dannys arms tensed around him and she wrapped him in a more proper bear hug, her palms spreading flat across his chest, while her head rested lightly on his shoulder.
As the adara bowed and left, Danny didn't do anything for a moment, just sat there holding him, pressing her nose into his shoulder. She didn't know what to say after that. She knew about Tellervo- what kind of ghoulfriend would she be if she didn't know some of his secrets- but for him to admit it to a bird out here in the open was brave. She was oddly proud of him.
After what seemed like an eternity, she said, "He's out there somewhere." She placed a soft kiss on his cheek and then let go of her embrace entirely, instead opting to take his hand and lead him out of the field. "C'mon let's go."

Rikki felt kind of empty. Talking about Tellervo always did that to him. He soaked in the comfort of Danny's hug, riding it out for as long as she would let him, and offered a small smile at her soft kiss. He hoped she was right. He'd like to find him eventually. Today would be nice.
He squeezed her hand and walked off with her. "Yeah. Let's go."
