"Think we found the spike!" Madison shouted, completely unnecessarily. She drew two swords and leapt for the flailing tentacle-beast, slamming both blades into it and carving two parallel lines of white ichor into the meat of the thing. A horrible rumbling burble issued from beneath the ice sheet they were standing on, and the tentacle jerked away before swinging around and smacking into Kouki's crossed blades. The defense held, but the jolt still bit into Kouki's FEAR shield.
"Smack it one!"

"I think so!" Ennéa agreed breathlessly. She readied Baraz and charged at the tentacle.
The giant flailing appendage was flopping about so much though it made it hard to attack. Ennéa ducked a massive swipe at her side and swung but the tentacle was already writhing out of the way. At the same time the tip hit her hard in the back, knocking the air out of her. "Ooof!"

"Little rusty?" Madison called out, but she swung around, catching the tentacle on its backswing. It smashed into her arm, but she brought a sword around and lopped off the tip of the tentacle. Instantly it started thrashing about, spitting ichor everywhere, steaming when it hit the ice.
"Hurry! Smack it while it's focused on me!" Madison jumped to one side, the tentacle tracking her movements.
Damage: 5

"Okay!" Ennéa readied her axe once again. She was rusty, it was true. The thrashing tentacle's movements were hard to anticipate and she was having trouble focusing on openings to attack. Ennéa could sense Baraz's attention hard perked some but the ahriman still remained sulkily withdrawn. Ennéa may as well have been holding an ordinary axe in her hands for all the help she was getting from him.
She swung at the tentacle anyway, noting in satisfaction that she managed to chop a good wedge from its' trunk. The tentacle withdrew some, the injured portion sliding under the ice even as it lashed out in retaliation at her.
Ennéa quickly tried to scramble away but it still managed to whomp her on the shoulder. Stupid. Baraz was always scolding her not to stand around like a cow after she attacked. Ennéa winced and shook her stringing arm. Doubtlessly she would have a horrible bruise there later.

Madison yelped as the tentacle's thrashings sent up a spray of ice shards that blasted her, one of them slicing through Kouki's fear shield and leaving a fine slice on the meat of one arm. "Knock it off," she snarled at the tentacle, swinging wildly and inflicting a shallow scrape in retaliation. The ice underfoot was getting slipperier now from the monster's ichor.

Ennéa tried to take another chop at the tentacle while it was distracted by Maddie but in her haste she slipped on a patch of icy ichor and her swing wobbled and hit higher than she had intended. It barely scraped the tentacle.
The tentacle curled and thrashed at her in retaliation like an angry earthworm. Ennéa managed to scramble away from the worst of it without slipping again but then tentacle picked up a small chunk of ice and hurled it at her with uncanny accuracy. "Ow! Hey!" Ennéa yelped in indignation. That had smarted.

Kouki was hissing angrily in her mind. "Hang on! I'm gonna bring it down!" Madison called out, then released Kouki's charge. The serpent-sword's hiss rose into a scream, like a tea-kettle overloading, and the blades tore free of the scabbards and her hands to fly at the tentacle-
-only for the thing to swat two blades out of the air and dodge the others. Madison stared. "The ********!" The two free blades returned to her, but the others had become lodged in the ice. "It's all yours!" she sighed, heaving to tug the two trapped swords free.

Ennéa tried not to boggle as the wily tentacle somehow managed to dodge all four of Maddie's blades. How the heck...? She started guiltily when Maddie yelled at her. "O-okay!"
Focus, gotta focus.
She ran at the tentacle. She wasn't going to let it dodge her attack.
But Ennéa was so focused on the flopping appendage that she neglected to watch her footing. She ran across a icy patch of ground and felt her feet slip. "Whoa!" She pinwheeled her arms, trying to regain her balance and got smacked by the tentacle while distracted.
Ennéa only barely managed to retaliate and nick it as swung past.
Damage: 2

The tentacle swung back, hard, and smacked into Madison too. "********!" Apparently the prohibition about swearing in front of Ennea was gone now. She tugged as hard as she could on the last icebound blade and managed to free it, then launched herself at the base of the tentacle, holding two of the swords bundled up together at the hilt, like some sort of creepy metal death bouquet.
"Just!" WHAM! "Get!" WHACK! "THE HELL DEAD!" SMACK! When she was done, the tentacle was flopping about like a fish, a good half of its meat hacked through like some kind of horrorshow. Maddie would never be a lumberjack, that much was clear, but the time for finesse and clean cuts was long gone.

Oh for Jack's sake. Stop messing around and just kill the damn thing! Baraz snapped. Ennéa jumped at the ahirman's sudden outburst in her mind.
"I'm trying." She snapped back at him.
No you're not, you're skating around like a dumbass mote while that stupid snake and his handler does all the work!!
Ennéa scrunched up her face rebelliously at that. "What is your problem, Baraz?? Geez!"
The tentacle flopped pathetically around and Ennéa paused to sidestep its attack. Maddie has nearly hacked through the thing but the tentacle apparently still had some fight in it. Once it got into range, the tentacle suddenly snapped up and thwacked Ennéa smartly on the ankle as she tried to hop out of its range. "Ooooh!" She growled in frustration, rubbing the welt that was already beginning to raise on her leg.
You see?!? Baraz said tartly. That's my problem!!
Ennéa was getting angry and the ahriman's words and his own anger seeping into her mind pushed her even further. "UGGGGH!!!" She wheeled around and swung at the tentacle as hard as she could.
Baraz's screech echoed her as he swung through the air. In his wake, winds icy and fierce swirled from the axe and sliced into the tentacle mercilessly. By time the winds died down the tentacle was merely a lump of meat, cut into ribbons.
Ennéa was breathing heavily, "No, I don't see, Baraz."
But in her mind the ahriman merely rolled his eye in disgust and withdrew once again.
Ennéa sighed and rubbed her cheek on her coat sleeve, trying to wipe away some of the tentacle ichor. She raised her voice for Maddie to hear. "So... I think we killed it?" She prodded a still lump of flesh with her axe's head. It didn't move but she was still wary; she had learned her lesson the hard way. "What do you think?"

Madison was tactfully ignoring the half-heard battle Ennea was apparently having with her weapon. The other Hunter's attack, once it triggered, was impressive; the protruding tentacle was effectively reduced to shreds, though her FEAR scanner beeped again as she felt something rumbling under her feet. A shadow passed below them and was gone.
"I think we made it go away, for a while," she said, slumping. "And I think the whole thing was a lot bigger than that one little piece... but this bit is dead, yeah. Ugh." She poked the tentacle too, using the tip of one blade. Seemed detached, now.
"If that thing is guarding the thing we're looking for, we are so sunk... maybe we should go back and report what we found? You look like you could use a bandage or two..." Her own injuries were stinging a bit, but she'd had way worse. This was barely worth considering, all things... er... considered.

Ennéa was grateful Maddie hadn't noticed or at least hadn't commented on the trouble she had with Baraz. Stupid eyeball. What was his problem anyway? She mentally prodded the space of her mind where the ahriman resided and was shoved back. She winced.
She further slumped at Maddie's words. "Yeah, I suppose it was too much to hope that chopping up a tentacle would kill the whole thing." Ennéa looked at the still mass of flesh, trying to imagine the size of the monster the tentacle must have been attached to. "We're going to need a bigger boat." She joked humorlessly.
Ennéa then sighed and winced again. Now that the adrenaline from the fight was wearing off all her various cuts and bruises were beginning to assert themselves. Maddie was right, it was time to head back. "Yeah, okay." She agreed.

"Oh, god, I don't want to get in a boat with that thing around. Fu- heck no." Madison shook her head and wiped Kouki's blades off on a snowdrift, as best she could. "Gonna have to do a better job when we get back to camp... get some cloths and clean Baraz off, too? He might, uh, like that."
And that was her contribution to whatever the fight they were having was. Yep.
"I'm gonna... bring some of this back. For science... euugh, it's so cold and slimey," she groaned as she pulled up a hand-size chunk of former tentacle. "They better appreciate this."

"I'll help too." Ennéa grabbed another chunk of the tentacle with a giant suction cup as large as a dinner plate. "Ewww" She made a face but stuffed it into her pack anyway. "They had better appreciate it." She agreed.
She wiped Baraz's blade on the snowdrift too though not nearly as carefully as Maddie had done. Baraz didn't say anything.
That done she turned to Maddie. "I'm good to go when you are. I want out of this cold." The sky was growing darker along the horizon and Ennéa was feeling chilled through and tired.

"Yeah, let's get out of here. There's a cup of soup back there with my name on it." Her scarf had sustained a tear during the battle; she tore the bit of cloth free, then wrapped up the tentacle-bit and put it away. "First the desert, then Antarctica and we were in the jungle not too long ago... be a Hunter! See the world! Pshhhh..."
She turned and headed for their line of flags, leading the way home.
