Awh, my reply got lost.
Anyways, someone said in another thread that Toph simply said "I want a kid,", stomped on the earth and smooshed some rocks together. Thus, Lin was born.

marshmallowcreampie TJ Moon I've been wondering the same question ... Did anyone notice that Lin kept the Beifong name? Technically Toph would've lost that name when she married Lin's daddy. Therefore, Lin should have Toph's husband's surname. Weird. Not necessarily. Not all societies have a patrilineal naming system; many have the children take the mother's last name. (I think China was like this for a long time) Even if the Avatar universe does use a patrilineal naming system, there are other possibilities. Consider that Toph was one of the few characters that actually had a last name. If she married a guy with no surname, Lin would've taken the Beifong name. It could also be a status thing. In some societies that would normally have the children take the father's last name, they may go the other way around if the mother was of higher social status than the father. He marries into HER family, not the other way around, if her family is wealthier. Anyway, I doubt that Sokka is Lin's father because that would make her and Tenzin cousins. Am I the only one who knows cousins can marry in Asia!? Really? I mean, marriaged among the bloodline isn't that uncommon in ancient Asia?

GS Sailor Dione Am I the only one who knows cousins can marry in Asia!? Really? I mean, marriaged among the bloodline isn't that uncommon in ancient Asia? Well, I know it's possible, buuuuut it's less likely for them to do it in an American show. Especially in a children's show. Granted, they did get away with a murder-suicide, but would they be able to do the same with incest?

Bryan and Mike have confirmed that this series is more dark and serious, and thus is meant for the old fans rather than children. Cartoons aren't always meant for children. A:TLA was a children's show. LoK isn't. Besides, the children watching this probably won't be thinking "Oh, but since Sokka is Katara's brother and Tenzin is Katara's son then that means they are related and this is gross!" until someone points it out and makes it simple for them. Or maybe they will, but even then, nowadays' kids' minds are already that complex, they won't even care.

When I watched "The Lion King 2" I pretty quickly realized that they made Kovu an adopted son of Scar because otherwise his relationship with Kiara would've been incestuous. While LoK is more serious than the first show, it's still airing on a kid's network during a timeblock for kid's shows, so kids are still gonna be taken into account. Furthermore, I feel like if Sokka was Lin's father, it would've been mentioned by now...

I hope that if they do mention who Lin's father is that everyone will be left satisfied.
