The faintest flicker of a frown and a slight pained narrowing of his eyes were all that gave away that her words had actually hit home. And his response to hurt was of course to go right back on the offensive.

"Yeah." he snarled. "You are right. You aren't my ******** mate, its just a turn of phrase." He no longer allowed himself to be sympathetic, no longer allowed himself to be anything but furious as her words continued to ring horribly true.

"No I don't actually ******** want you dead. I was trying to help." he finally forced himself to climb off her, hardly daring to breathe until he was stood back on the floor, steadying himself against the bed. "I don't ******** know what they do to people without their weapons, but I somehow doubt they'll put you down."

He gave her a frown, blood properly soaking his dressings now at both his shoulder and his waist, teetering unsteadily on his feet. "If one hunter can lose their weapon. We all can. Don't you think they'd want to know why?"

Where are you? What the ******** do you think you're doing? If this is some sort of sick joke-- It's not ******** funny.

Clerise was too self absorbed in her own pity party (population: 1) to see that her words had a very real effect on the man who was trying to help.

She looked at his bleeding, lips turning upwards at a cruel smirk. At least she wasn't alone in her suffering-- her leg ached like none other, the drugs they'd given her wearing off. Idly, she wondered if they'd give her morphine again.

"I don't either-- and I don't want to ******** find out first hand." She ran hands through her hair, trying to smooth some of the tangles out, yanking on it at the roots instead when she failed.

"Great, so I could be a ******** science experiment?" Clerise curled her lip at him, regarding him as coolly as she could manage.

"The Life Labs have computers. As soon as they cut me loose, I'll go...search and see if I can find anything." Never mind that she barely knew how to use the computers properly.

Clerise mentally went through the possible people she trusted with this information, slowly eliminating each and every one of them, including the hunter in front of her.

"If you tell anyone, I will find you, and I will kill you." Even if it means killing myself in the process.

He rolled his eyes. Women. Seriously. It always had to be so ******** complicated. She couldn't just go get s**t sorted, she had to do it the long way.

"Right. I'll put this in words you can understand through your ******** emo. That is a ******** terrible idea. There is a ******** Apocalypse fight coming and its possible that these horsemen can destroy our weapons, and you are going to try and solve it YOURSELF?" he laughed cruelly.

"Listen circus girl. Like you said. We are trainees. We ******** suck. You think you are going to fix this without the aid of people way ******** higher up? You are more ******** delusional than I thought."

He snarled. "You need help. ******** deal with that fact."

And also just because he was feeling especially sore after the snipe at him before he added. "You can't kill me anyway. Not anymore."

"It's easy for you to say that, given that your weapon is still lodged comfortably in your brain." She gave Rep a long look, resisting the urge to give in to her baser instincts. "Also, what
You better come back. You ******** hear me?

God, she still wanted to scream. Scream and scream and never stop, not until he was back.

I hope you're happy.

"Listen. I ******** get it, okay? I'm not about to go on some ******** crusade all on my lonesome-- but I'm ALSO just not willing to sign my ********> death warrant
without even seeing if this is temporary." Clerise doesn't even convince herself with that, let alone an incredulous a*****e.

"Do you think that once Caelius hears about this, he'll let me live, no questions asked? Without the one tool that makes me useful? No. He nearly lopped my head off for bitching at him."

She rubbed her arm, yanking lightly on the cuff again, pinching her nose with her free hand.

Rep was right and she knew it, and that was the worst part. Meet him halfway, that was all she could do, anything more left her with the sensation of dread sinking around her shoulders, tightening around her neck.

"All I ******** want to do is check on the computers-- if nothing ******** comes up, I'll give up and play it your way."

The sight of his bloodied bandages combined with that phrase that reminds her that she is weak and fragile all over again is all it takes for her to try and kick him a second time. Unfortunately for her, the blow is half-hearted at best. The attempt left Clerise sliding off the bed, letting out yelp of pain as she landed on her bad leg, knee buckling beneath her.

Hanging off the bed, Clerise glared up at him, straining against the cuff holding her down.

"I can try," the redhead muttered, slowly pulling herself back up onto the bed like a wounded animal, sitting on the end of it.

She buried her head in her hands. "Ugh. Look at me. I'm like a declawed cat."

The sight of her conceding even an inch was somehow more unsettling than her outright rage and fury from earlier. Even as he watched her the room felt as if it was spinning. It was getting tough to actually stay properly upright he noticed and he had a feeling he may have set back whatever healing he'd managed to do since he got to the hospital.

"What happened in 1999 is very possibly going to ******** happen again. I mean look at the missions. TWO with ******** horsemen things in as many weeks, you think s**t isn't going down?" he didn't even want to say it out loud, it had just been a thought, a niggling worrying thought, but one by this point he couldn't shake.

He gave her an exasperated sigh. "And I wasn't saying go to ******** Caelius or Simon about it. Clarice is who I'd go to. At least if she put me down I'd know she wasn't just doing it for whatever ******** reason the way ******** lord death does. Check the comps if you have to, just don't keep it quiet for too long. This s**t could be important."

The kick though feeble did make him yelp in surprise and back further away from her. But he didn't get angry this time, instead giving her an almost sympathetic look. "At least you are life, you guys can function on intel and s**t. You aren't a sun or a moon."

"Clarice is my first thought, too," she admits, sucking in a deep breathe. "I just don't know -- if she has to tell the doc if there's something ..." Clerise shrugged. "I'll ask her."

She leans back against the head of her bead, listening to what Rep has to say. "s**t's going down, but I'm not calling it an apocalypse."

The laugh that followed was near hysterical. "We can't be about to have a ******** apocalypse with ...This s**t."

Oh, but she knew better to think, to dare to hope, that this was just a bad dream. The look she gave to Rep was cynical, but she didn't say anything untoward. The urge to break things was still stronger than anything else in her, but goddamnit, she'd wrestle it to the ground, even without the mental voice that helped.

You are such a ******** a*****e.

"I guess." She gestured at him with her free hand, eyeballing the red that stained his bandages. "Go rest. If I feel like shrieking like a ******** banshee, it'll be into the bed."

He stood, listening to her intently, too messed up to rage any further. All he could do was feebly hope she'd do the right thing and that it wouldn't be permanent. He liked Clerise, though he'd never ******** admit it in a million years, and didn't want to lose her as a comrade. "You should. At worst, she can tell you what your prospects are."

He felt he was probably being a bit too serious, and tried to relax, not wanting to make her feel worse, or feel patronised either. "All right. Because if you start that ******** screaming again, I am going to come back and the whole ******** bed goes out the ******** window with you attached."

There was no way he could do anything of the sort at the time being in any event and it was rather clear with how difficult it was even for him to walk out of the room, despite his best efforts to look as if it was no big deal. "Later circus girl." He stated as he headed into the corridor.

The nurse might have found him on the floor of his room when they checked back later rather than his bed. Apparently there was only so much bluffing you could do.
