He still didn't like the look she kept giving him. He did understand her statement about not remembering who all they worked with when it was busy. Everyone rushing around with matching uniforms, calling out orders, trying to respond to those orders as quickly and officiantly as he could. He'd probably never remember any of the names that went with the faces he seen on a daily basis.
"It is a bit of a change," he admitted, "I used to travel around a lot before I came here so it's strange to finally settle down in one spot for more than a few days at a time."

"Oh?" She asked, curiosity piqued. "For a trainer journey sort of thing or did you need to travel for a job or something? I came here almost right out of university.. In fact, I guess I left uni' just a little early. Huge change. Didn't realise how much until it hit me rather hard... Y' get used to it though." She didn't see the harm in learning a little about each other- not much in the labs hadn't really changed, it seemed- clearly nothing -urgent- that she -had- to be informed about and she felt like the 'catch up' was a little irritating for the both of them. It -was- nice to meet someone that she could talk with regarding the labs though; it would be good to have another friend down there.

"You must be pretty smart to have gotten out of there early," Rory chose to approach the easier topic first. He had heard about the universities before, but with his life there was no way he would have ever been able to go. Not with the schedule he kept.
"I never really got to be a trainer," why was he telling her this? "My job kept me on the routes more often than not, always going from one city to the next," Saffron, Cerulean, Vermillion, Celadon, he had been all over his home region. If he tried, he could probably still navigate the short cuts through most of the routes. That had probably been the best bit about his career.

"Ah... Uh, actually. I didn't exactly, y'know' finish m' /whole/ plan there.I sort of dropped it... 'The chance to do real science and earn real money'." She quoted and managed to keep the bitter edge of the words a lot more concealed than she might have done once before. It was there to notice, sure, but buried enough to be discreet.
She brightened straight back up as he talked of traveling. "Oh? How many regions have y' traveled in? And, what was y'r job if... I can ask that is?"

He watched her closely; if she could do it to him, he'd do it to her. So they had talked her into joining, huh?
"What were you going to do if you hadn't?" Rory was curious, she had a decent education, so why choose to come here even with the promises they made.
At the question about his previous job, he froze. What could he say that wouldn't give him away? "I worked with pokemon in Kanto. I was getting ready to travel to Hoenn to start work there but things got in the way," that was a huge understatement but the closest version to the truth. He scratched the back of his head again, wondering if the nurse would let him wash his hair to get rid of the itch that kept popping up.

"Become a researcher." She answered plainly. "Science, traveling, making notes on pokemon, seeing so many different ones... Getting close enough for DNA samples to study in a lab and working with other scientists... That was the dream." She shrugged and smiled at him. "Eventually, 's supposed t' be all that and -much- more freedom with access to the most advanced equipment around here... Yeah, I know. I got a little duped and that's kind of a long way off now, but after a year and seeing the terms on the, uh, termination contract, so to speak, it's here that I am now..." Tambrey spoke really rather frankly, laying out her explanation plainly and yet, it was almost rehearsed. There was probably a little more going on than just that. "So." She was, in any case, certainly pleased to return back to his career. "Those are two places I always kind o' wanted to travel around. Especially Kanto; Viridian Forest, Pewter Museum... Mount Moon..." Yes, she really would have liked to have seen Kanto. She shrugged. Unlikely, for now. "So, what sort of a job involves that sort of travel? Watcher or something?"

A year later and she was still doing the grunt work? Wow! When she mentioned the termination contract, he understood. Once you signed on the line, you were in with no way out. Well, one way out. He didn't want to think about that though. At least she was in a place where she could put the skills she already had to work.
She mentioned something about Mount Moon. "I've been to those a few times," he told her, "The museum was nice and it's very easy to get lost in the mountains," he and Pinkie had once. If it hadn't been for her flames, his coordinator probably wouldn't have found them as quick as she did.
"That forest is a whole other story," if Rory never saw those trees ever again in his life, he would die a happy man. "You don't ever want to go in there unless you have to," the site where the worst, well second worst, moment of his life took place.
He smiled slightly as she tried to guess at his former occupation. Watcher, no way his younger self would have been on the sidelines watching. "Something like that."

She likely had very little defense for the lack of advancement in rank had Rory asked her, but she'd come out with it frank enough and without any shame, it seemed. Perhaps she was just good at grunt work... or good at staying unnoticed. Whether she really wanted to or not.
"I've heard -a lot- about the museum. Good things." She admitted, but there was a little frown. Hm; museums... She seemed to blink the thought away, listening to him talk of Mount Moon and then the forest. It was that bad? Well, she knew not everyone... liked forests. She would have found it fascinating though, she suspected.
'Something like that.' Hm. That was interesting. "Y'know... if it's none of my business, I won't mind if y' say so. I can't guarantee I won't find myself -even- more curious, but I can respect being told if it's none of m' business..."

Rory looked down at his hands. Great start to making friends, he thought, keeping secrets from people that were only trying to get to know him.
"I'm sorry," he apologized, hoping he could try to smooth things over. It would be nice to have one person in the lab that was friendly with him, "it's just....I haven't really told anyone my story yet." He had put all the information on his application though so someone along the way knew his story and why he found himself employed with Team Rocket.
Maybe it wouldn't hurt to tell one person. Besides she probably wouldn't even know much about it anyway and it's not like she'd run off to tell everyone she had ever met. He hoped. With a deep breath in, he explained, "I used to compete in contests before I came here."

Erk. Frak, that went wrong. "Sorry... 's not meant to sound 'snippy' there, you don't have to apologize." She held her palms up, realizing how the tone might have come across. "I actually meant it though," She smiled "that you can tell me to 'mind my own business and I would've..." And he was telling her anyway. She blinked but smiled, a little puzzled. "Well that's hardly any kind of dark and terri- wait. Have you ever been in one of the ones f'r TV?"

At least she was genuine when she spoke. It was nice; that made him hopeful that she really would keep his secret safe. If anyone back home found out he was out here... and working for Team Rocket. He shuddered to think of what would happen. His parents would be furious.
"For a few of them, I was," it was kind of nice to actually be able to talk about his experiences in the arena with someone. He remembered those ones the most, the lights set up all around, making sure his costume was in pristine condition, Pinkie had loved those ones the most.

She was looking at him strangely again. That odd, half-familiar look. "I... think that's why I thought I recognised you." She said after a few moments, before looking around conspirationally and leaning in. "I... happen t' be kind of a contest fan... I can't tell you just how many reruns I must've watched... How many contest magazines 've got hidden in my bottom drawer..." She was leaning out again, looking him over, perhaps placing him. The pink ponyta... She'd glimpsed it on the mission. Now, of course; she /was/ quite a contest-styled pokemon... And this was her trainer. Things were clicking into place, but at least it /seemed/ like she was to be discreet about it.

His lips stretched across his face in a wide grin. She was keeping her voice low, that was good. He made the right choice in telling her.
"Really? I wouldn't think of contest magazines as being 'bottom drawer' material," he thought back to the interviews he had done over the few years he was in the circuit. "Well, except for that one time they did the swimsuit one." Why he had been asked to pose for that one he never understood; his specialty and only pokemon was a fire-type!
"I had a really good run in the Kanto circuit for a while once I got used to how things were ran."

Tambrey blinked, furrowed her brow and then realised just what he said. "Ffff. Not like that." She smirked "I's just the place I've put them. No one really looks in lower drawers-'s always top drawers... Anyway... Kanto circuit? I've got a couple from that and I've watched some reruns! Mostly I've seen Johto stuff... Uh, 've you seen much of that? I follow Elly the Phanpy..."

Rory got a good laugh out of her reaction to what he had said.
"I haven't kept up with it too much since I got out. Hard to watch someone else doing what you love, you know," he commented, "I didn't get to go out to Johto too often. I think I went out there once or twice when I was starting out to get a feel for it but I didn't stay."
He remembered the reason he hadn't be allowed to stay in Johto, "Besides everyone in Kanto loved me and they loved what my pokemon was able to do. At least that's what I used to hear."
