CheshireKttty Cereus eyed the mare suspiciously. So far he had been able to avoid that particular question. Really he had avoided it so thoroughly that perhaps even he didn't quite know the answer. Why was it that he kept her around? He supposed the company was nice, but then again he had Akiko for company. What then? Perhaps he had originally picked her up as a toy, some sort of plaything, something that he could keep around for his own amusement. He supposed that that was certainly one reason he did keep her. Then again she had behaved so well that hadn't she become more than that?
Cereus looked as Ashe, really looked at her and tried, for once, to tell her the truth. "I suppose," He hesitated a moment, afraid of what he might be about to say. "I suppose it's because I like you."

He liked her.
Her mouth felt dry, her heart was pounding in her chest. You'd think these were good things--but they weren't. This was merely the chance she'd been waiting for. A way to beat him at his own game, a way to find a way out.
She cast down her eyes, allowing the flush to come to her face without fighting it. Let him think what he wanted, "I..."Her voice caught, she was going to tell him that she liked him too but she coudln't bear to say those words--not yet.
For a moment, she fumbled in silence and suddenly and quickly she nuzzled his neck gently. If felt like fire touching her skin--not like the pleasant blaze on a cold night, but the unbearable heat of the wildfire that had taken her family.

CheshireKttty As soon as the mare touched him Cereus felt like he'd been slapped by a bolt of lightening. Sure he liked the mare, but he hadn't meant it like that. He was about to jerk himself away when a thought occured to him. Wouldn't he need to find a mate eventually? Sure Ashe might not be his first choice in a mare, but she could certainly work. He only needed to convince her that he truly felt the same way for her. Now was certainly the time to do that. Though it pained him a little to do so, Cereus nuzzled the mare back affectionately. This might be easier than he had originally planned. He debated on saying something to Ashe as well, something to reinforce the act, but nothing came to mind. Perhaps it would be better to let her speak first and take the next action. After that he could decide his next move.

Ashe felt his face press back into hers and for a moment, her stomach gave a lurch. No, she'd kept calm before and she wouldn't lose it now. She looked up into his eyes and blinked slowly, "Really?" Her voice was soft as she gazed up at him.
She breathed heavier. "I didn't know...I didn't know that you felt..." She leaned against his neck. His heart thrummed evenly, but she could feel hers racing slightly. Good, let him think this was real.
She wasn't quite sure how to proceed this or...should proceed this or what to say. She tried to think of what she'd heard others say, "When did you know?"

CheshireKttty At the mare's words Cereus thought he might gag. It was disgusting how easy it was to fool her into thinking he actually cared for her as more than a companion or, well, more than a favored pet which is really all that she was. The stallion tried to search his brain, thinking of anything that someone who cared for another would say in this situation. His parents had never been particularly loving and he hadn't had a whole lot of interaction with others outside of his swamp, but he might be able to come up with something.
He nodded in response to her first question and continued on from there. "I think I always knew." He told her softly, almost as if he was afraid of saying the words. "I didn't think you could, well that you could even care for me. It made no sense to tell you." There! That had to be convincing. Cereus grinned mentally to himself, giddy with excitement, curious to see how his experiment might turn out.

Something about his words seemed wrong to her. He couldn't really care, could he? It had to be some ruse...But she really couldn't tell. It didn't matter if he was lying or not, because she was. And she could play along if it meant getting away.
She smiled up at him, "I'm so...happy." She wanted nothing more than to ask him to take her somewhere--but that would come later. She couldn't even push to learn more about the swamps--not...yet.
She leaned closer to him and nuzzled his cheek again. "Why didn't you say something sooner?" She asked him gently, half curiously.

Cereus wondered how much longer he would be able to keep this act up for. Certainly it could take some time. He debated on stopping it now, dumping the mare in the middle of the swamp someplace and returning to his peaceful life. Yet something held him back. He would need minions of his own one day, spawn to continue on his line. Not to mention he did enjoy the mare's company for whatever perverse reason that he did not know. No, he would stick to his plan for now. If he grew weary of it he could dump her later.
"I think maybe after I brought you back to the caves. Perhaps even when I first met you. I could have left you in the swamp to fend for yourself, yet I couldn't bring myself to leave you." Cereus mixed a bit of truth in with the lies. He had in deed been unable to leave the mare for whatever reason, yet he did not care for her in the way he was leading her to believe. "What would you have done if I had told you sooner? Who could love me? A monster." He spat the words out, filling them with a bitterness that he had never realized that he had.

Ashe was w taken back by his words. It seemed to hear them coming from him--even if they were a lie. But part of it didn't feel like a lie anymore. Part of it felt like truth and it was oddly unsettling.
Even if it had been true, he was write. Who could ever love a beast? But he was a beast, and it all wasn't true. He was evil. All of this was lies, all of it. "I don't know," she said honestly. "I don't know what I would have said. I don't even know what I would have done until now. I just..." She looked at him uncertainly.

Cereus turned his face away from Ashe as she spoke. For some reason he felt ashamed. Ashamed of himself. For ... what? For lying to her? For her thinking him a monster? Was it because deep down somewhere not all of it was a lie? He wished he knew, wished that he could answer his own questions. He could see the uncertainty on her face and wondered if she was having second thoughts about him. Perhaps she didn't feel for him like she was leading him to believe. He wondered for a split second if he should go, should allow her her freedom. NO! His mind cried out to him, he couldn't do it. For whatever reason he couldn't allow Ashe to leave him. Not yet. But he could give her more freedom.
"I can understand if being around a monster bothers you." There it was, that bitterness creeping back into his voice again. "You can come and go as you please. I won't keep you locked away anymore. I trust you not to wander too far." He paused a moment, then felt the need to go on. "But be warned, you shouldn't wander far. The swamp is harsh territory and trying to escape would only get you killed." He told her a bit more harshly than he had intended.

There it was, some kind of measure of freedom that he was allowing her. It was odd--but well it was just odd. He was strange, from hot to cold. From monster to tortured. How much was real? How much should she believe?
Logically, none of it. She needed to not overthink. She took a deep breath, "You trust me?" She couldn't keep the shock out of her voice.

Cereus could only nod at the mare in response. He no longer trusted his emotions or his voice. What was going on with him? He shouldn't care what this mare thought of him nor should he allow her to go wandering around by herself. Yet what he had already said could not be undone. He would simply have to live with the choices that he had already made.
The stallion was angry with himself for feeling soft and weak. One mare should not, could not, make him feel this way. "If you get yourself into trouble out there don't come crying to me expecting to save you. Once you leave you lose my protection." He snapped, unhappy with himself and taking it out on her. Who was he kidding? He wasn't capable of caring for anyone. Nor would this mare ever care for him in return. He was a monster. He was created by monsters. He would remain a monster.

Ashe breathed in again, she nudged him gently hiding her face against his pelt. Her heart was beating fast. He was trusting her, and she could not lose that trust and she could not escape on her own, she knew that. She would have to be rescued, learn her way out or get her release.
But try as she might, the only idea that came to her mind made her want to blush and shiver in shame. There was no other choice though, not really...The most important thing was to survive no matter what the cost. She could do that.
She would have to make him love her.
She nested up against his skin, "I wouldn't do that..." Her voice was soft whisper. This is how she wanted to speak to Lutherian, how she had never gotten to speak to him like a lover. The words felt like lead in her mouth. "Let's go home Cereus."

As the mare nudged Cereus he could feel a certain warmth spreading through his body. No matter what his mind told him it seemed his heart had other plans. Perhaps though, just this once, he could toss logic aside and give into his feelings. Even if his father would likely look down on the notion.
As Ashe spoke, Cereus wanted to believe her. He wanted to believe that she would stay with him without wanting to leave. He desperately wanted it with all of his heart. Yet part of him was still weary. It would take some time before he could fully trust her, fully believe that what they felt for each other was real. And yet he was already falling hopelessly in.... No. He couldn't say it. Wouldn't. Not yet anyway.
The stallion shook his head to rid it of the thoughts that threatened to overwhelm him. He would think them through later. For now he should focus on getting Ashe back to the cave. "Yes lets" He nodded to her and turned to lead the way back home.

Her heart thudded heavily in her chest. She knew what he would think, perhaps what he would expect from her. It was Lutherian she cared for, Lutherian she wanted to talk to and whisper sweet things too. But she closed her eyes and leaned against Cereus again.
He would love her, he could. She wouldn't let herself get hurt or involved. She just needed to seduce him, but she wasn't quite sure how.
