when i was a kid we lived in a house in Pennsylvania that had been a station on the Underground Railway for runaway slaves..
inside the front hall closet was a little door only two feet high. if you crawled through there you came to a space under the stairs that seemed to be used for home canning. BUT!
if you pulled on a shelf to your left, that whole wall swung out and there was a huge space under the stairs and running back inside the walls of the house, amazing.
