"oh right, there's still both of those...." he said. "I was hoping you'd take over the rest of my sweeping and we'd call it a day. well, get the birds first, I prefer the cats anyway."
he got back to work, sweeping the floor.

"I can sweep as soon as I'm done," Katriel replied enthusiastically. She busied herself with the hose. Then once the kennels were clean and only smelling marginally of urine, she got the broom and swept all the walkways. When she was done, she looked around for Vince but couldn't find him, so she followed her nose to the birds and rabbits to clean their cages.
This was a problem--as soon as the rabbits smelled her, they panicked. Their frantic hopping set the birds off. Katriel's ears could hear dozens of hearts beating too quickly. She slipped out of the door. How was she going to do this? Maybe if she covered herself in some fruity body spray or something.

the sound of frantic animals revealed Vince from his hiding place playing with a litter of kittens. he rushed into the room to see the animals just starting to calm down again. Katriel was nowhere to be found.
he began looking around for her. "kat?" he called quietly, going through the few rooms of the building and then around back.

Katriel was half-way in the cupboard under the sink in the break room searching for lemon pledge or something when she heard Vince calling for her.
"Don't call me that," she almost growled. But she pulled her head out. "Sorry, I didn't mean to snap. Is there anything I can do for you?"

"I don't know--they all just went nuts when I walked in the room. I thought it might be all the dog-smell on me from cuddling with Doby, so I thought if I smelled like cleaning products, they might not go bonkers the next time," she half-lied. "Any suggestions?"

"huh..." he scratched his head. "maybe perfume will help." he suggested. "something strong, but not overpowering."
he realy didn't know what would help. it seemed fishy, considering the dog smell hadn't freaked them out before.

"here, try this." he said, offering her a cologne spray-bottle from his jean pocket.

"You must be a real hot-shot with the ladies," she teased as she accepted it. "Thanks." She sprayed herself liberally, front and back. It smelled awful--like alcohol and synthetics--to the point where she couldn't smell anything else. Perfect. "How do I smell?" she asked, half joking.

"not realy..." he said, turning his head away. "I can't even get a date. I got this to drown out the smell of rescue animals, but I guess it just makes me smell even more rancid."
he whiffed the air, and then coughed.
"like a Hollister store."

"At least we smell the same now," Katriel wheezed. Maybe she over-did her masking job. "I think I can handle some bunnies and birds now. That is if they don't keel over from asphyxiation."

"That's really sweet of you. I honestly thought you'd forgotten," she confessed as they made their way to the bird and bunny enclosure. "I'm not normally a mooch or anything. I'm just...in some really tight straights right now. Fortunately, living in my truck isn't a big deal, since it has a camper, but I have the puppies to feed and they're a bit...finicky."
They reached the room with the timid animals and Katriel hesitated.
"Mind helping me? If we work together, maybe we can get it all done before the shock of our smells wear off," she said jokingly.

by now, the animals had calmed down some. they were mostly quiet, though the birds kept occaisionally chirping or squawking. it seemed, however, that they couldn't make out a serious threat anymore.
Vince went in first, and started cleaning cages and refilling food and water. he waved Katriel into the room to help him.
he was honestly surprised that Jess hadn't come in to solve things, and wondered to himself if that was a good or bad sign. but he didn't say anything, not wanting to worry the new employee on her first day.
