[ Heat ]
The sound of fists pounding on his door was never Adrian's alarm clock of choice. But that was what he awoke to, one morning, and it couldn't mean anything good. Still half-asleep, he stumbled to the door and opened it. Kaleb was standing there, looking uncharacteristically serious. "'Sup?" was all Adrian could manage.
"Can't you hear that?" the teen asked.
Adrian listened and heard the distinct sound of cat-like yowls coming from a room down the hall. He swore under his breath and beat feet to Rayen's room, stopping at the door with a skid. Hana, Soco, and Malachite were already there, peering into the room but not daring to enter it. A quick peek inside revealed Rayen tossing and turning on his bed, the blankets pushed off from the movement. He had his face buried in one pillow while the other was under his hips. His tail was held over his back and twitched every so often.
"The hell is he doing?" Adrian wondered aloud, though he had a sinking feeling.
"She is in heat," Hana said in a matter-of-fact tone.
All eyes turned to Adrian.
"Oh, s**t," the guardian said, blanching. He recovered, reaching to shut the door and block out some of the noise. In a rush, he added, "Look, I'm sorry I didn't tell you when he first got here, but I didn't think it was important, then."
"He's a she?" Malachite asked.
"He's both."
"Oh," Mal said. He then made a face. "That's kinda weird. How does that all work?"
Adrian sighed. "I'll give you another sex ed. lesson later."
"What are we going to do about him?" Soco asked.
"There's not a whole lot we can do until it passes," Hana cut in.
Kaleb snorted. "So, I guess we just don't sleep for however long that takes?"
"It's not like you get a lot of sleep, anyway," Hana said ******** you!"
"No, thanks, I wouldn't want to catch something."
"Enough," Adrian said, a hand to his forehead. "Hana, what do you do when you're in heat?"
The tiger-girl's eyes narrowed, appalled that Adrian dare ask such a thing. "I lock myself in my room."
"How long does it last?" Soco asked.
"It can last for a few days or a week, and then it comes back a few weeks later."
"Great," Kaleb snarled, leaning against the wall. "It's like PMS."
Adrian got an idea. "Are there any meds to help? Either to keep it from happening or to make it less... severe?"
"There are hormone pills to suppress it," Hana said, loosening up a little, "but there are too many side effects."
"Get him spayed," Kaleb snapped, "or her, or whatever the hell it is!"
"Shut up, Kaleb!" Malachite snapped in return.
Finally, Adrian snapped. "All of you, get the ******** out of my hallway and let me deal with this!"
That shut the teenagers up, and they wandered back to their rooms. Soco stayed a moment longer. "Should I call a doctor? or a vet?"
"Probably," Adrian said, rubbing his hands over his face. "But how many vets do you know have dealt with hermaphrodite cats?"
"Personally, none, but in a strange place as Gaia, surely there's at least one." Soco smiled and patted Adrian's shoulder. "You'll figure something out. I'll go see about whipping up something filled with chocolate for him." He turned and headed for the stairs.
"Thanks." Adrian turned back to Rayen's door and sighed again. "I don't have the patience for this," he murmured.
The door suddenly opened, revealing a very disheveled looking feline. He looked up at his guardian with wide eyes and whimpered. "Adrian?"
"Hey babe," Adrian said, reaching out to smooth down some of the brown hair. "How're you feeling?"
Rayen moaned and tilted his head back against Adrian's hand. "Weird... hot..."
"Yeah." The guardian continued his petting.
"Sorry 'bout the... noise..."
"You couldn't help it, could you?"
"No."
"Then don't worry about it."
Rayen raised a fist to his mouth and bit his knuckles as another yowl tried to escape him.
Adrian pulled Rayen's hand away and pulled the cat into a loose hug. "Don't try and hold it in; just let it go."
Rayen clung to him and buried his face against Adrian's chest, letting out another long cry. Adrian shuffled them into Rayen's room and shut the door. He sat on Rayen's bed and waited for the noise to die down again. Rayen pulled himself up into Adrian's lap so that he was straddling his legs, and shuddered as he rubbed himself against him. He tried it again, purring at the friction against a part of him that had been burning all morning.
Adrian placed his hands on the cat's hips and held him away from his crotch. Rayen whimpered in frustration as he pushed against those hands, needing something to rub against, again. "Adrian~"
"No," Adrian said firmly. "You can hug me and cling to me, but you can't do that. Not with me."
"Why not~?"
Adrian sighed and wondered if now was an appropriate time to give Rayen "The Talk." "Because you're going to make me feel hot and weird if you do that," he said.
Rayen pouted.
"I know, I know, I don't like it any better than you do," Adrian said. "No one likes feeling this way."
"Make it stop!" the feline whined.
"I can't." He left one hand at Rayen's hip and wrapped his other arm around him in a hug. "I would if I could, but I can't. We'll see what we can do to make it less uncomfortable, but it won't go away completely."
Rayen whimpered and let his head rest against Adrian's chest again. "Why?"
"It's part of growing up."
"Growing up sucks."
"Yeah, it usually does."

[ Book ]
"It looks like a book," Rayen said, peering at the item Soco held in his hands. They were sitting together on a couch in the mansion library. "Looks like all the other books here."
"It's a special book called a journal," Soco explained, opening the cover and showing it to the felinoid. "See? There aren't any words in it."
Rayen blinked and watched as the teenager flipped the pages. Sure enough, save for some lines, the book was blank. "It's a silly book," he concluded.
Soco smiled and shook his head. "It's for writing in. People write in journals to talk about their thoughts and feelings and such."
"Ohhh," the blue cat said, though he still seemed unimpressed. "I can't write."
"Until you learn how to write, you could tell me what you would like to say in the journal, and I'll write it in for you."
"Okay." Rayen made himself comfortable while sitting close to Soco, intent on watching. "Write... 'book'." Soco did as he was told, and Rayen peered at the neat writing that appeared on the page beneath the boy's pen. "That's 'book'?" he asked, just to be sure.
"That's 'book'," Soco repeated.
"Book... write, 'Hello, book!'"
Again, Soco put pen to paper, and then paused as he waited for further instruction.
"Hmm," Rayen looked pensive, trying to think of what else he wanted his journal to say. "'I like Benjamin,'" he said, and watched as Soco wrote it down. "Which one's Benjamin?" he asked.
Soco pointed to the orange cat's name. "This word right here."
"It's big," Rayen said as he tilted his head. "Write my name, too?" He stared down at his name on the paper. "It's short," he said with a faint pout.
"Well, I can make both your names short," Soco said. Beside each of their respective names, he wrote "Ben" and "Ray." "There," he said. "Now your names are three letters long, each."
Rayen tilted his head in the other direction. "Oh... I like that."
"I thought you might."

(( Temporary Hiatus Notice:
Rayen's journal was on a hiatus, anyway, so I could take care of other stuff.
I'm going to NY from tomorrow until Sunday.
When I get back, I've got stuff to do with Rayen. Like, fixing those chat logs so that they're not... chat loggy, and are up to standards.
See you Sunday. heart

(( Chat-log Re-Write Numero Uno. Yeah, it's short, but there wasn't much to it, anyway. >.>; )) First Meeting - March 12, 2006 It was to be the first meeting of many between the two felinoids, and it began with the elder, orange felinoid poking the younger.
Rayen blinked at the stranger, but didn't move. The other stared at him, and slowly Rayen responded by poking back.
This elicted a happy wave from the orange-one, and Rayen mimicked the action in return.
"Heyo!"
Rayen blinked again at the greeting, but slowly replied with a simple, "Hi."
"Who're you?" The orange cat played with the hem of its sweater.
It took a moment for Rayen to form an answer to such a simple question. He wasn't stupid; he was still getting used to speaking. "Uhm... 'm Ray-en."
"Mm." The other grunted, and then said, "You're blue."
"I am?" Rayen looked down at himself.
"Yeah, it's pretty!"
Rayen stared. "S'that good?"
The felinoid nodded.
"Oh." Rayen frowned thoughtfully. "Good. Who're you?" he finally asked, and then added, "an... yer or'nge."
"I'm Benjamin," the other replied, "and yes!" He smirked lightly, and said, "Blue and orange are complementary colors."
Rayen made a face at the big word and tried to pronounce it. "Com-pu-ra-ma... wha?"
Benjamin giggled. "They look good together," he explained. "Something like that."
"Oh," Rayen repeated. "Okay."
An awkward silence fell between them. Benjamin began playing with his tail and flicked his ears. Rayen simply stared, even as the other flopped over and began stretching.
All of a sudden, Rayen found himself pounced, and he fell backwards in surprise. "Nya!"
Benjamin rolled away from him, snickering.
Rayen shook himself as he recovered from the shock. He then followed after Benjamin and pounced him in return. "Myah!"
Benjamin squeaked, and Rayen jumped off and scampered to the side.
"I'll get you," Benjamin growled playfully.
Rayen simply giggled and began shuffling backwards as Ben slunk after him. As Ben's eyes gained a mock-predatory shimmer and his tail began lashing, Rayen's fur rose up and he moved sideways.
Benjamin moved close, and then stopped for a moment, muscles tensing. A moment later, he leaped at the other kitten and tackled him.
Rayen fell backwards again with a yelp, and began wrestling against the much larger feline. "Myaaah~"
They rolled and tussled for a moment, before Ben lept away again, snickering to himself.
Rayen rolled over and shook himself off, again, before giving chase.
Benjamin soon found himself cornered, and Rayen pounced again, nipping at his victim's ear.
"Gyah!" Ben wriggled beneath him.
Rayen licked over the tiny bitemarks before giving up and flopping down on his side. Benjamin flopped down with him and batted at him with a paw. Rayen batted back sleepily.
There was an announcement from the guardians that it was time for bed, and Rayen promptly yawned.
Benjamin blinked at him, and said, "Ni-night."
"Ni~" Rayen replied as he was carried off to bed.

(( Chat-log Re-Write Numero Dos. )) Second Meeting (Later that Day) - March 12, 2006 Not long after the two felines had parted ways to go to bed, Benjamin found Rayen still dozing. Shifty-eyed, he approached him and began nibbling.
Rayen startled awake and meeped at the odd sensation in his ear. Once he recognized the source of the feeling, he relaxed into a contended purr.
Benjamin ceased nibbling in favor of petting. "Good afternoon, blue friend," he said cheerily.
"Hello, or'nge furrend," Rayen replied, still half-asleep. He noticed odd black stripes across Benjamin's fur and reached out to touch them.
"I'm a tiger today," Benjamin announced, purring at Rayen's touch.
The blue cat frowned, thinking of one of his many housemates. "Hana a tiger. She dun like me so much."
"Hana?" Benjamin repeated, blinking. "I've never seen a real tiger!"
Rayen nodded. "Tiger are pretty."
Ben looked down at his stripes. They were quite a mess, considering they were made of fingerpaint. "Yes, they are," he agreed. "I don't think I did a very good job."
"Is pretty," Rayen said after a pause. He traced a finger over the stripes, scratching some of the fingerpaint off as he did so.
Benjamin smiled, his tail flicking behind him. "Thanks!"
Some Signs of Growth - March 23, 2006
The two meet up a week or so later in much the same way they'd met the previous times. Ben began nibbling Rayen who purred and leaned into it. This caused the orange feline to smirk. "Hello," he said as he began petting Rayen again.
"Hello," Rayen said. "How're you?"
"Been good," Ben replied, rubbing at one of Rayen's ears. "You?"
"Mm, doin' okay." Rayen tilted his head into the rubbing. "Tired."
"Aww. Busy day?"
"Mmhmm." Rayen nuzzled at the other cat. "Sorta."
Benjamin nuzzled back, purring. "Was it good-busy?" he asked.
"Uh-huh. I," Rayen paused, "I helped clean. An' learned to do laundry."
"Aah," Ben said, making a face, "chores."
"Chores?" Rayen repeated, blinking at the other's tone. "Was helping."
"But see," Benjamin explained, "once they figure out you can clean, they'll have you do it all the time."
The little feline considered this before shrugging. "Dun have to. Have Soco to clean. An' have to learn to do laundry, anyway."
"Rayen~" Adrian called. "Time for bed~"
Rayen almost pouted, but leaned up to give Ben a quick lick on the cheek.
Benjamin licked back. "Bye Rayen."
"Bai~" Rayen said before bounding off to bed.

(( Chat-log Re-Write Numero Tres. )) The Cuteness Never Ends - March 25, 2006 Another day, another meeting. This time, Rayen took the initiative to pounce Benjamin and start licking the orange cat's ear.
Judging by his squeak, Benjamin was taken by surprise. He grinned and hugged the smaller feline. "Rayen!"
"Ben-en," Rayen said, adding on the extra syllable so that the two names would be even. He started nuzzling at Ben happily.
Ben purred at the attention and nuzzled back, grinning. "How are you today?"
"Goooood," the smaller feline drawled. "You?"
"I'm good, too," Ben replied as he stroked Rayen's fur.
Rayen purred and tilted his head into the petting. His tail managed to find its way and wound around Ben's. Ben noticed this and chuckled, his fingers moving to scratch behind one of Rayen's ears. Rayen simply flopped against him and enjoyed the attention. Ben relaxed, continuing to pet the blue cat.
Suddenly Benjamin sneezed, disturbing the tranquility of the moment. "Sorry!" he squeaked, turning his head away to rub at his nose.
Rayen blinked. "Bless you."
"Thanks." Benjamin sniffled. "I've been doing that a lot, lately," he said.
Rayen tilted his head in one direction. "Sick?" he asked.
"I'm not sure, but I hope not."
Rayen frowned. "Hope not, too."
"I don't wanna go to the doctor's," Ben said, making a face.
The other cat just shook his head.
Benjamin sighed and snuggled against Rayen, still sniffling softly. Rayen mewled and nuzzled at Ben's cheek with his nose. This caused Ben to smile and he nuzzled back for a moment before nibbling on one of Rayen's ears. Rayen mewled again and pressed himself against Ben. As his eyes slid half-shut in contentment, Ben purred loudly and hugged the other cat.
Rayen took this opportunity to begin giving the orange fur a thorough tongue bath, beginning at Ben's neck and making his way up to Ben's ear. Ben leaned his head back to enjoy the attention, and to allow Rayen better access. Once Rayen had made his way back down Ben's neck again, Ben licked at his forehead and purred deeply. Rayen nuzzled under Ben's chin and rested against him. Their purrs grew softer and softer as the two slowly drifted off into slumber together. (( *eyes the last of the chat log posts* Ugh. -.-;; I think that one will have to wait for another day. ))
