Deryk stared hard at Caelius.
"What."

He watched Deryk carefully, considering an explanation, before shrugging and waving it off. "You risk your life out there every day, trainee. Are you really surprised I don't do the same? I don't see you drinking."

"O-Oh. Well uh. Just that. Always carry air of confidence. Managed to face horseman and live. Other things too. What.. exactly are you doing? Made you feel differe--"
Right.
Booze.
Deryk grabbed another bottle and opened it up to start drinking. He still couldn't really believe he was sitting here drinking with the division leader of all people.

As Deryk listed off all of the reasons why Caelius seemed indestructable, Robert began to think hard. And that was difficult, with the increasing amount of fuzz flying in his head. Jeez, he'd only had three beers, why did he feel like he was going to pass out soon? He meant to go grab a fourth, but smartly decided to pass. Instead, he felt his phone beeping, and let out a raucous laugh. The entire cafeteria stopped and stared at the sound of Caelius bursting with laughter. "I'm a real popular guy today! Let's see who this one's from.." He finished off his last beer as he read it, and his eyes widened, accidentally spitting the beer out in surprise. How the hell had MADISON found out?! She certainly wasn't texting CAELIUS like this.. Jesus Christ, this was getting a little out of hand. "Uh.. uh.. just.. give me a second here, Mr. Bond." He started texting back, fingers flying against the keys, but mostly the backspace because he was making way more mistakes than usual. Even autocorrect was having a hard time with him now. Sosiqui OMG HOW THE FUNK DID YO FINE OUR FUNK FUNK IM IN THE CAF WITH DIRK BUT HE DUST NO SO STFU

Madison was now running across campus, heading for the Life labs just in case, when her phone buzzed. It was some serious cognitive dissonance to see this crazy-a** typing coming out under Caelius' name... Good thing she could text and run at the same time! To Caelius' phone (Robert) HES IN HIS OFICE AN SUPER MAD @ U UR GONNA DIE BRO sad NICE NOIN U sad sad sad BUT SRSLY WHR R U

Deryk froze at that noise. The noise of Caelius... laughing. It wasn't a snicker or anything like that. It was. All out. Laughing. Something wasn't right here. Of course it could be the booze but he had his doubts that Cael would laugh even if drunk.
".... Are you really Caelius?" he asked slowly. Would he have asked such a question when he had been scared out of his wits moments ago while buzzed?
Probably not.

The question made Robert's blood turn ice cold, but he was a professional actor. He would not break scene. His face turned cold, and he finished his beer, before gesturing coldly. "I thought we were having a pleasant conversation, trainee. If you feel like questioning me in such a ridiculous manner, however, then I'm going to have to ask you to leave. Now."
He wished he could summon Circe. It would punctuate this moment perfectly. So instead, he used his words.
"You are dismissed."

Deryk froze once more. Oh s**t he pissed off Caelius. In no way was he going to stick around.
"Ah! S-sorry sir!" he stammered out before getting up and bolting on away before Circe could come out.

Madison had to stop running and puzzle over the message for a while. He just salt? What the ******** did salt have to do with anything? This was pretty ******** incomprehensible even by Robert standards. ... But okay. She knew where he was now. The Death Hunter took a deep breath before turning and running the other way, towards the cafeteria. She probably... Caelius had given her an order, but Robert was her friend and she could at least warn him first. She arrived in the cafeteria only panting a little bit, and she allowed herself a moment of satisfaction at her own awesome stamina before launching herself through the door. And yep. There was 'Caelius' in the corner. She skidded to a stop in front of the table, saluting at him for the look at the thing. "'Sir', you are so hugely ********>," she whispered at him, putting both hands flat on the table and leaning forward so nobody else could hear her. "How the - why the - what is going on seriously."

It was hard not to smile up at Maddie when she bent in and hissed at him, but since it was already obvious she knew the score, he couldn't help himself. He leaned in just a little closer, and his eyes dropped to stare at her with a half-lidded gaze.
"Oh, come on, Maddie. Come here and give your new division lead a kiss hello." His lips puckered up for a moment, in an exaggerated manner.

"Hell no, oh god stop making that face that is CREEPY," Madison said, actually covering her eyes a moment in sheer horror. "Don't make his... his face do that, god." Somehow, she remembered the 'Fracs Deus Ex' from the Life labs all those months ago - and no, no. Actual Caelius looking cute was just never going to happen.
Though maybe that was just because Robert thought puckering up looked more like MySpace duckface?
"Seriously, how the hell - and he really is really mad, he told me to find you, I decided I owed you your life, so..."

Robert immediately stopped, snickering when Madison freaked out in horror. He leaned back on the chair, popped open his next beer, and stretched his legs out.
"Relax, sugar. I know he's mad. He's mad, because he has no control over the situation. Have you ever known Caelius to not be in control? He hates it. He's shittin' bricks because I have the power to literally ruin his reputation. But here's the secret."
He leaned in and whispered it as if it really was a secret. "I'm not. In fact, I'm being pretty tame." He reached out and squeezed her nose affectionately, before leaning back again. "So you don't have to worry so much. He ain't gonna do s**t. But.. it is kind of nice that you're so worried about me. Makes me feel a little funny in the pants." He waggled his eyebrows horribly.

"Don't talk about me and Caelius and funny in the pants," she snapped, "or I'll give you and him a black eye at the same time!" Was she kidding? It was kind of hard to tell...
Fortunately, her expression softened into a wry grin. "Of course I'm worried about you - hell, I thought you were in Caelius' office and ran in to save your a**, and I guess I figured I wasn't done with the a**-saving yet. But, uh. Is this kinda... like, going to happen to other people? I don't wanna wake up in anyone else's, uh, pants. Or whatever." She gave him a wary look, as if whatever Robert had done might be catching.

Robert's exaggerated look softened to genuine affection, and he reached out to pick up Maddie's hand, and hold it in her own. "I'm sorry, princess. I didn't mean to worry you. Come on. It's gonna be fine. You can trust me."
Coming from Caelius, that was hard to believe, even as genuine as Robert made it sound.
"Anyway, I think you're all safe. He had this artifact, you see. And he was carryin' it around in a box like it was nothing. So I bumped into him in a hallway, and it fell, and broke. And that's how this happened. You guys are safe, though. He's gettin' it fixed, and he's never gonna let it happen again. Because he's ~Caaaelius~, and God forbid anything goes wrong around him."
It was clear Robert did not hold himself responsible in the slightest for this mishap.
