Slashing claws and snapping teeth appeared on all sides of him in a flurry of lightning-fast brutality, and hot fetid breath filled his nose. Mattaki could keep going for a while longer, a lot longer, but he needed a strategy.

Right then he felt the air shift above him, whistle of wind was all the warning Mattaki needed to throw himself belly down in the mud, covering his head. Gritting his teeth, he didn't bother getting up; instead he swung his halberd hard and flat in front of him, arc-like, shearing through the insane demon's front legs in a spray of bone and blood, and lightning-dusted skin suffocated him as the demon toppled forward.

The Zetsumei Sekai's roar of agony and rage was deafening, but Mattaki's victory was short lived. He had a bare instant to glance up and the Zetsumei Sekai lunged at him, and then monstrous jaws closed hard over the side of his rib cage, grinding deep into bone. The pain was intense, but adrenaline was keeping the worst of it at bay. He could still move, and all be damned, he was going to. Because while ever the Zetsumei Sekai had him, he wasn't going to teleport.

'Strike while the mouth is full.' It was an old trick he had learned from his Father as a child when dealing with snake demons, but he hadn't thought he'd ever use it himself. Snarling as he felt his rib cage begin to collapse, vision blurring out with shock, Mattaki swung his halberd again, his grip slick with blood. This time, he dragged the tip of the axe up to the old demon's neck, bracing it with his other hand. Now he'd show the demon just who he was dealing with.

Then Zetsumei Sekai snapped his jaws shut.

There was a wet crunch of cartilage and bone breaking in his chest, and he stared wide-eyed up into the sky for a single, seemingly endless moment.

It didn't hurt this time, he thought faintly, surprised. Everything was numb. He could barely feel the halberd in his hand—

His aura flaring higher in a triumphant haze, the Zetsumei Sekai laughed around his crushed chest, and he knew what those ancient eyes were saying.

You're too late.

Mattaki spat a mouthful of blood in his eyes.

"See you in hell," he rasped, dragging one last gurgling breath into collapsing lungs. It was exhaled in a breathy rasp as he released a final burst of energy.

Mattaki's vision whited out as vicious stabbing serpents of energy devoured each other and ignited, and the Zetsumei Sekai shrieked in intense pain as it was bombarded by the attack and released him, then as suddenly as the fight began, the creature lit up with another burst of light and fled the scene with a loud crack of thunder. Mattaki never felt the fang that had pierced his lung as his mind went black with unconsciousness. The barrier dissolved around him in a plume of acidic green vapor, leaving him in plain sight for the villagers of the Cat Demon Tribe.

I made a new topic for the Cat Demon Tribe, all my new posts for Mattaki will be there.

                          "One-Two, Hop!"

She nearly slipped from that last ledge. Squatting and bobbing up and down, a little girl eyed out a large boulder in front of her. She had been climbing down, ledge by ledge, from the mountain top path on her way to the lake. She had been low on fresh water and it was about time to stock up on her supplies. Jumping from her spot on the ledge to the boulder platform below, she used tiny pale pink wings to help her glide safely. Atop the large rock, her purple-pink eyes scanned the area. Now that it was morning, she could travel without too much worry from demons. Before her parents up and left, she always remembered that night time was the most dangerous time to be outside.

But it was a perfect, sunny morning. And Ami intended to greet it warmly. She smiled brightly, seeing the lake was not too far away now. She put her hands on her hips and giggled to herself, "Shouldn't be too long...If I'm lucky, I may find a rabbit to eat too!"

Wiping her black bangs to the side as she swiped the sweat on her forehead, Ami proceeded to the lake. It would've been nice if those wings of hers could carry her. What use were wings if you couldn't fly? But, she didn't complain, for one day she would be able to. She was still much too young, still a baby, both in human and demon standards. But despite her age, she felt proud of the fact that she could still take care of herself without her mother or father.

She wore a short sleeved, gray-ish robe over a longer, gray-ish brown robe. It was rather plain and poor in color, but it was the only garments that belonged to her father. He improvised, finding it rather difficult at the time to travel to Konoha to buy clothes for his half-demon child. A child his fellow man was not aware he had. So, they tailored her outfit with his old worn robes. To jazz it up with color, Ami found colorful ribbons and obi sashes in pinks, purples and teals to complete the look. It was Ami's mother who then had sewn all the material into clothing of her size. She treasured these robes, for it was like her parents were always with her, despite how much she brags to herself that she doesn't need them.

She had her father's baby-face and black hair. Her skin was peachy, but pale due to living indoors most of her life. Both in hiding from humans and demons alike, and from having no where else to go. Her black hair tinged to a dark purple near the ends, something she had inherited from her mother. Her demon eyes were also a captivating gift from her mother, whom always joked that it were those eyes that seduced her father. She never understood what she meant by that, but love never did catch her attention. Love was gross and icky. She had more important things to think about than that.

Ami snapped out of her daze when she scrapped her hand on a sharp side of the rock. A sigh left her lips, yet another bandage to add on her body. Her arms, legs and even her wings were covered in bandages. All from failed attempts to fly. This time however, it was from carelessly day dreaming about her past. She didn't scrape it enough to draw blood, but her child-like mind set always told her "if it hurts, cover it up."

Maybe she'd have to save some gauze for a real emergency though...

Making it a game, Ami continued to hop down from ledge to platform until she felt the soft cushion of grass under her feet. She turned to look up from where she started, with her hand over her eyes, as a visor from the sun. Satisfied with her decision to climb down rather than take the long way down, she nodded with a giggle and went about her way. From what she saw, earlier, the lake was just beyond the brush of trees. She had a better view when she was up high, but now that she was ground level, she'd have to navigate herself more carefully. Otherwise she'd get herself lost. The thought gave her shivers and she sighed. She had her fair shares of being lost in the woods. Thankfully though, with hours of wandering around, she'd always pick up on something familiar and find her way back to her poorly made camp.

She could've just stayed in the house her father built. But she knew better. Ami knew that eventually humans would come upon the house, see her and -- well, things would not go well. She didn't hold any resentment for humans, after all she was half of them. It was her mother that gave off the idea that humans were more dangerous than demons. Something she didn't bother to question or understand. Maybe it were all those scary bed time stories of humans ripping her wings off that made her steer clear from them. She never truly knew what happened to her parents. So maybe humans had to do with it. Point was, that man-made house was going to be the death of her if she lingered there too long. So, she made camps or hid in fallen tree logs. Always sleeping in a different area, but never leaving the boundaries of Konoha.

After a moments walk, she pushed aside a low branch of leaves and her eyes gleamed. There was the lake! She smiled brightly and nearly shouted in joy of her discovery. But before a sound could leave her lips, her sharp eyes shifted to the brush across the way. Her eyes widened in horror. What she saw quickly caused her to hide herself behind the branch she had earlier pushed away. Peeking under and through the leaves, she made out a monstrous creature, limping its way to the lake side. Wait, limping? The demon had a human-like face, though, it was more like a pale white mask. Its mouth was closed, but Ami knew better. From stories her demoness mother told her, she knew that the demon's seemingly innocent white face could peel open and reveal razor sharp teeth and a long tongue. Its build was much like an oversized horse, minus a mane and tail. And rather than hooves, the demon sported large human hands with pointed finger tips.

She was grateful for what information about the demons in this world that her mother told her about. Surely if she had gone about her life without knowing half of the stories, she'd be dead by now. This demon before her was known to be an eater of children. Well, spoiled children. Her parents always taunted her to do as she was told otherwise this creature would be the end of her. The Zetsumei Sekai. Ami bit her lip and urged herself not to cry. The demon looked obviously injured, like it has healing from a prior battle. But the fact that it was sitting at the lake side, sipping water, struck fear into her heart. The first thing that came to her mind was: "Its waiting for me." She didn't think of herself as a spoiled child, but now that the demon was nearby, it definitely made her thoughts race in her head. Maybe she didn't realize it, but she did something wrong? How convenient was it that they would be in the same place, at the same time?

Ami took in a deep breath. Calm down, she had to repeat in her head. She had to assure herself that she didn't deserve to die. That she went through too much to die in the jaws of the child eater. She lasted this long, all alone, she wasn't going to take this creatures sighting as some sign from the heavens. Not lying down. All she wanted to do was collect water and survive in the woods. Surely the demon would understand...Maybe because she was half demon and not entirely human, it would spare her? Reguardless, she had to summon up the courage to move. So, she did.

She pushed aside the branch of leaves again and walked out to the clearing. This caught the Zetsumei Sekai's attention very quickly, as its head jerked up from the water edge and stare in her direction. She almost stopped in her tracks at the inhuman gaze that met her eyes. Ami was shivering now, despite trying to be brave. She walked carefully to the edge of the water, keeping her eyes on the demon who was merely across the lake. She knelt down and pulled out a small bottle-shaped gourd from within her robe sleeve. The demon only watched, staying absolutely still as it observed Ami. She felt uneasy being watched, but it was a lot better than having it rush at her to devour her. So, so far so good.

Pulling the cork off the gourd, she dipped the opening under water and stared at her reflection. She hoped maybe if she ignored it and forgot that it was there, her fears would go away.

It got quiet. Too quiet for comfort. Despite better judgment, Ami gulped down the lump in her throat, and looked up from the water. Her eyes widened when she saw that the demon was no longer across the lake from her. She looked down, closing her eyes. Ami's heart began to race in her chest, so much that it began to hurt. She kept her eyes shut tighter, believing that if she couldn't see it, it wouldn't see her. She took a few breaths and sighed them out, quickly but quietly. Trying to regulate her breathing was all she could possibly do to relax. Calm down, she had to repeat in her head. You didn't do anything wrong... You didn't do anything wrong...

Ami slowly opened her eyes and looked down at the gourd in the water. She pulled her hand out of the lake and began to cover the opening with the cork. However, when she stared into the water, she saw something strange with her reflection. Leaning down to get a better look, Ami put the gourd of water away into her robe sleeve and squinted her eyes at the reflection. She saw herself fine, but behind her...There was a black mass--

You didn't do anything wrong... Right?

Ami quickly spun around to see a pale white face awaiting her. She screamed as the Zetsumei Sekai opened its mouth and dripped saliva from its menacing tongue. She ducked under a swiped claw, as she ran aside from it. How did it end up right behind her? It was so fast, she'd never been so scared in her entire life. Granted she had only been living for eight years. Ami looked back, still running, with the demon hot on her trail. She had forgotten the Zetsumei Sekai could teleport. But, it probably could only afford to teleport that one time, for it still looked injured. Maybe that was the reason why it was so angry with her. At least, she tried to believe.

There's no other way, I have to fly, she thought, with tears streaming from her eyes. That was the only way she could escape. She couldn't fight this demon. She was only a child, up against a child eater. Were she older or at least stronger, she could stand up for herself. But even if she could stand a chance, no one could kill the Zetsumei Sekai. She had hope riding on her wings, it was either she fly or die trying. And death was coming too close. With her already running start, Ami focused hard on flapping her tiny wings, hopping up to get momentum. It was futile, but she couldn't give up. She had to try!

She ran as fast as she could, tears falling from her cheeks, looking back at the demon who made every attempt to get at the girl as possible. She used the razor sharp teeth as incentive to try harder. Ami jumped up, and flapped her wings. Astounded that she could get her feet off the ground for so long, Ami's eyes widened as she looked below her. A quick smile crossed her face. But it only lasted a second, for the joy was short-lived when the child eater's tongue wrapped around one of her wings and pulled her down. All that left her lips was a startled gasp as she was swung down, hard and swift, against the ground. Ami coughed out, writhing in pain. The demon was usually sympathetic of children, and made their deaths (even the spoiled ones) fast. So, in an attempt to end her suffering, the Zetsumei Sekai lifted her off the ground by the wing and slammed her down again. Ami's scream filled the woods, as she felt her wing becoming dislocated from her back. The pain grew to be too much and she blacked out.

The demon released her and approached the fallen half-demon. Sniffing the girl. Its rage subsided, the child eater only stared silently. Realizing what it had done, the demon returned to the lake side, sipping its fill of water, before returning to Ami's side. It lowered itself beside the unconscious girl and rested its wound. It was rather conflicted upon the thought of eating her or letting her go. She was already heavily wounded, as it noticed the bruises on her body from the slams and the disfiguration of her left wing from being yanked rather hard. It was best to wait before moving her. For now, they both needed rest, and the demon intended to do so in peace this time.

(( ooc:: damage to her wing and body D: ))

                          ---

                          Mother...I'm alone...

Hot streams descended from her eyes. With a wistful, and almost amused, look on her face, the demoness placed her hand under Ami's chin. Rather than wiping her daughter's tears away, she caught them in her palm, smiling wickedly. Then, she cupped Ami's cheeks between her hands and brought the crying child close to her face.

My sweet babe, do you think crying will make things better? the demoness purred, turning Ami's head slowly left to right, gesturing her to say "No." She released the girl's face, and wrapped her arms around her neck, bringing her close against her bosom, No, of course not,

Ami hiccupped a cry, closing her eyes as her mother made an attempt to comfort her. Stroking her hair, the demoness' smile never left her face.

Mother...I want someone to play with... Ami pleaded, quietly through her sniffling, You and father don't have time for me anymore,

To this, the demoness frowned and looked down upon her child. Surely she was not neglecting her. She spent almost all of her time tending to the child's needs and providing her with the freshest of meat for her hunger. Perhaps it was her human side that made her so weak-willed. If her child were a full fledged demoness, like herself, she wouldn't have to deal with such petty whims. She will admit though, this was the reason why humans amused her so. With that being said, her mother smiled her wicked smile once more as she giggled, Very well, sweet babe. I will fetch you something to play with. Perhaps a live rabbit or a dog that you may toy with before eating--

No, mother, I want a little boy or girl, like me, she murmured, looking up into her mother's eyes, hoping to bring out a more maternal side to the sinister demoness, To play with everyday, and...not to eat...

Preposterous. What a strange demand this child was proposing to her. But, after another moment to think of it, the demoness mused upon the idea of having another set of little footsets running amok in the house. So much so, that she ended up loving it. Though, staring at the man Ami called father everyday had become boring and tiresome. Instead, she had plans to indulge another human man. To her, it was all the same. Rubbing Ami's cheek, the demoness grinned excitedly, I understand now. But I will have to leave your side for a little while. I will return with another sweet babe, all for you,

                          ---

The sun broke through the trees and beamed right onto her face. Ami squinted, before eventually shutting her eyes. Slowly, she raised one of her hands to her eyes, leaving it there to block the rays of light. She felt numb, with nothing but the branches of leaves above her to stare at. Little blotches of the blue sky faded in and out of view as the wind blew through the trees. Any attempt to move her body evoked a sharp joint of pain throughout her body. Biting her lip, she laid still, covering her eyes with the palm of her hand. Now all she saw was black darkness. Ami couldn't remember what happened. Maybe everything was a dream. Maybe only now she was waking up to greet the day. But, the surroundings didn't feel like her campsite from last night. She had to think. Where was she again?

She pulled her hand away and turned her head completely to the left. There was no getting up right now. Even if she realized she was staring death in the face. Her eyes widened, but rather lazily. Again, to greet her, was the Zetsumei Sekai. She didn't have the energy to scream anymore, nor to cry. She was dead exhausted. All she could afford to do was stare silently at the demon, who only mirrored her. When the demon saw that Ami wasn't planning on moving any time soon, the Zetsumei Sekai lowered its head and returned to sleep. Now the little girl's eyes furrowed, left rather confused. She thought by now she would be eaten. But then again, she wasn't going to question it or take the gesture for granted. Her eyes trailed over the child eaters body. Now that she was close enough to it, she noticed how badly it was injured. Deep rooted scars along its legs that were still fresh and bloody. Ami's eyes softened.

"I'm sorry..." she whispered, with a groggy and cracked voice, "I would be mad too, if I were in pain and someone bothered me..."

The demon raised its head and stared at her again. Ami could understand, to a certain degree. If she was lying on the ground trying to rest, like she was now, and someone came by, she would be on edge too. She'd be worried if this stranger would take advantage of her weak state and try to finish her off. Perhaps that was what the Zetsumei Sekai thought? That Ami would try to kill it while it was weak. Come to think of it...

Ami raised her head now. The demon was laid around her. Protecting her while she slept? With that, Ami didn't have to worry about anyone coming by to finish her off. She had the Zetsumei Sekai watching over her. She started to feel sympathetic, instead of fear. Sure, this demon crippled her wing badly, but it did for her what no one would do for it. It wasn't as if someone could watch over the child eater while it rested. It was always a target for attack. No wonder it was so defensive. Ami struggled to sit up, wincing and grabbing her shoulder in the process. As she sat up, she looked up at the demon's face and smiled weakly.

                          "Thank you,"

For now, she would rest before being on her way. And she was sure the demon wouldn't mind the company, now that it knew Ami would do no harm.

Ami sighed softly, as the gentle breeze caressed her. She ran her hand back through her hair and looked up at the child eater. In return, the demon only looked down at her, silently. After sitting quietly for a few hours, she felt comfortable in the presence of the Zetsumei Sekai. She grinned up at it, to which the demon only tilted its head. Then, Ami slowly started to stand up, patting the backside of her robes to rid of herself of stray blades of grass. Curiously the demon only watched. The little half-demon stretched her arms up to the sky -- before twitching her wing and flinching. She shook her head, rubbing her shoulder, looking down. She didn't have to look back and see it, she already knew her wing was in horrible condition. So much for flying anytime soon. She remembered earlier, when she was trying to flee from the demon, that she almost had it. She supposed almost dying was the right push she needed to get her wings to cooperate. And even though it only lasted a second, and may never happen again for a long time, Ami smiled at the memory of her feet no longer touching the ground.

Examining the rest of her body, Ami rubbed along her arms and legs. There were definitely bruises. But, she was long over them. She easily forgave the child eater. Now the matter at hand now was how was she going to survive? Surely she couldn't wait in the woods forever for her wounds to heal. If she couldn't go about her day without wincing in pain, there was no way she could hunt for food effectively. She placed her hand on her chin, thinking. Ami knew bruises were nothing, but if her wing went unattended for too long, it might get infected. That was something her father had taught her when he came home one day with a bad gash in his leg. But Ami was no doctor, all she knew how to do was clean her scrapes and cover them with bandages.

And she was running out of bandages.

As if it could sense her distress, the Zetsumei Sekai stood up and nudged her, gently. Though it was barely a touch, Ami still flinched, but then looked up at it. She glanced over at its legs and noticed that its wounds looked much better than a few hours ago. Ami knew that demons healed much faster than half demons (and even more so than a normal human), so she was glad it was able to recover well. She giggled, happily, "All better? That's good! ... I guess that means you're going home now, huh?"

The demon only stared at her silently for a moment. Something that un-eased the little half-demon a bit. She had hoped she wasn't pushing her luck by thinking she could talk to it now. But to her pleasant surprise, the child eater nudged her again and then turned its head to look at its back. Was it gesturing for her to go on his back? Ami tilted her head a little. It was a nice offer, but where did it plan on taking her? It wasn't as if the demon knew where she lived and was going to take her home. She had no home to return to. And if it intended to take her to the nearest village, Konoha, surely she wouldn't be warmly welcomed there as a half-demon. Especially if she waltzed in with a child eater. Ami looked down, with a disappointed look on her face as she shook her head.

Unable to take "No," for an answer, the Zetsumei Sekai opened its mouth, and whipped its tongue around Ami's waist. Being mindful of her injuries, he placed her onto his back and retracted his tongue back within its mouth. Ami held tight onto it back, stiff and frightened. The demon didn't move yet, waiting for Ami to un-tense before it did anything. When Ami regained her composure, she sat up a little. Her eyes softened a little before she nodded, "Ok. You know best. Thank you very much,"

Returning the nod, glad that they came to an agreement, the child eater turned its head forward and took a single step forward. In the blink of an eye, both demon and half-demon had disappeared, with nothing but the wind stirred up where they only a second ago stood.
