Gale’s answer didn’t sound too reassuring. Wilson stared at the younger hunter with a skeptical gaze before sighing and accepting the response for now. “Okay then, but if you change your mind and want to sit down for a while, just say so okay?” He looked over at Ofie. “That goes for you too, Ofie. It wouldn’t be good if one of us was out for the count during this mission.”

Ofie’s outburst toward one of the people walking down the streets startled him and he stepped toward her. “Careful. I don’t think it’s a smart idea to cause a ruckus, especially here. Something’s definitely wrong.” He shot another look at the bugs on the ground, especially at the few locusts he managed to find. Wilson was pretty sure locusts weren’t supposed to be in Georgia, so what were they doing here? The rotting stench was back, making him crinkle his nose. It made him uncomfortable. “We have to find the killer, right? I hope we find it soon so we can go back.”

Gale's eyes flickered back towards the other two, his head spinning. He did not want to be here, he wanted to be back at Deus, back where he didn't have to smell the scent of hot sand and the desert, back where the memories would be lessened because he could distract himself with something else, things that didn't matter.

But he could not, and he was the leader of this mission. He could not afford to let his guard down.

His gaze flickered back to Wilson, his lips pressed together. "I'm fine," he said, a bit too testily, but then he exhaled slowly, trying to get his emotions back in check.

<< Calm yourself. You're giving them a bad example. >>

I know.

<< Just relax. Don't think about it. >>

Easier said than done.

His eyes went back to the signs.

"What the hell do these even mean?"

Ofelia didn't like how Gale was acting, even if he said he was fine. There was something about having a teammate who was down during an adventure that spelled bad news for everyone involved, and the teen bit her lip as she debated overriding his commands and telling him he needed to go home. He had a higher rank but she was older, right? Was the Brit boy man enough to listen to his elders or was he one of those people that blindly followed commands without hesitation, thinking rank would protect him in the end? "Gale, yer seriously startin' ta make me nervous here. Are we even sure there's a mission or is this jus' some kinda prank by people?"

She didn't mean to sound doubtful, to sound cruel, but just from the looks of it people weren't really doing much. Sure there had been the sand of decay and the weird signs, which still lined the streets as far as she could tell, but everything else she could dismiss. A senior prank with spray paint perhaps, a small town of people overly shy of strangers. It was weird considering she'd yelled at them all before but. . . well, she was getting bored and impatient.

Wilson pressed his lips together to prevent himself from saying anything else. He wanted to insist that Gale wasn’t fine, that he seemed a bit on the edge and that it might be a better idea to rest briefly before continuing their search, but he kept himself silent. Gale was the leader of this mission and despite his younger age he had been an intermediate trainee than Wilson had. Gale had more experience as a hunter than Wilson did. Surely he knew what he was doing, right?

He followed the others and looked back at the signs to examine the spiral symbol again. “I don’t know, but it’s definitely weird.” Wilson stared down the street, the signs lining up with each other. “I don’t think it’s a gang, at least. Plus, the mission description said there’ve been murders here. Human or not, I think we should still look around. This isn’t just some prank.”
