Candace! Oh, Candace! You promised! Please! Please! You PROMISED! Candace nodded. She had promised. As promised, she went to town. Candace threw herself back and landed on her hands, hitting two shadows as she lifted her legs to follow the movement of her body. She lifted one hand and turned her wrist, a risky move that she was just winging to see if it worked. The momentum of her legs helped her spin along as she took out four more shadows. She landed on her side with a wince, rubbing her wrist a moment before rolling onto her hands and knees and pushing herself up. Atropos wasn't done yet and neither was this wave. Next came a cartwheel. Five, six, seven, eight, nine..another back handspring took out three more shadows. ...She did it. She made it to the end. Candace panted for breath as she stepped through the end portal, stopping just outside it with her hands on her knees. Damn that was a workout! She laughed, rubbing at her face and then stretching her arms up over her head. She felt great! Status Wave: 5 Attack Dmg: 12 Total Shadowlings taken out: 32 Recoveries left: 0

A water bottle was suddenly thrust into Candace's peripheral vision, along with a towel folded over one arm. The hand holding the bottle of the water was partially masked by a fingerless glove. Candace didn't need to notice the well manicured nails to know that the hand belonged to her division leader. "Good job," Aria complimented, gesturing with a roll of runic bandages in her other hand. "Straighten up please, you've taken some damage. You and I also need to-" the division leader turned to one side and sneezed into the crook of her arm, finishing her sentence with a "Talk," that was followed by coughing.

Suddenly bottle! Candace blinked and accepted it without a second thought, following the owner of the hand to see the face of her leader offering her praise. Oh man! She really needed that Aria had no idea how badly she needed to hear praise right now. Candace's smile grew as she also took the towel and wiped at her face, draping it over her shoulder so she could open the bottle and take a nice swig from it. "Thanks! That felt great." Ohhh! Runic bandages, too? Best leader ever! Candace closed the bottle and accepted the offering, nodding at Aria's gentle order and tending to the scratches and cuts and bruises on her body. Her shins were okay thanks to the guards but the guards themselves had marks now. Damn, no more pristine appearance! But it was nice to see they'd done their job.
"Hmm?" Candace looked up from what she was doing as Aria cut herself off to sneeze, pouting a little with concern. "Sick, ma'am? You should be resting. But sure, we can talk." She finished mending herself with the bandages and took another sip of water. "What's up?"

"Should," Aria agreed, grabbing hold of the end of her scarf and coughing into it. "But can't. Got pulled outta bed. There's some things that only a division leader can do."
Aria turned, walking away from Candace to retrieve a bag. She hefted it up and brought it back to Candace, dropping it in front of her. She then held out her hand, the hand that was not clutching the scarf towards her face. "Desummon your weapon and give her to me. Then put these on." There was no please. This was an order. The bag contained a pair of boots, a necklace, and a pair of runic weapons.

What? What idiot would pull a sick woman out of bed? Candace was wiping the back of her neck and shoulders with the towel she'd been given while Aria walked away to pick up some back and drop it in front of her. Eh? What was this? Candace was about to look inside the bag when Aria gave her the most peculiar order.
"What?" Candace laughed almost incredulously, though she did desummon Atropos. But why was Aria telling her to hand her over? Was this for some kind of training or something? "Not that I don't...trust you but why, ma'am?" Candace opened the bag to see what "these" entailed. Boots and runic weapons and...a necklace? Random. But she did as she was told, taking the rings off. She was very reluctant though. Why did Aria want Atropos?
What are you doing? Stop that. Don't hand me over to her! Are you crazy?! Candace bit down nervously on her lip, looking down at the rings in her hand. I can't defy an order from a leader, much less mine, Atropos. There was a snarl. I. Don't. Care. You are not to give me up! Do you hear me?! Her gaze lifted from the rings to Aria and then down again. It was very tempting to disobey Aria's order for her weapon, but at the same time...
It certainly wasn't a quick response but Candace did eventually place the two gemmed rings into Aria's waiting hand, her hand lingering like she was going to snatch Atropos back. The weapon was snarling in her head as Candace brought her hand back and did as she was told, kicking off her sneakers and replacing them with the boots. She then put on the necklace and picked up the runic weapons, frowning. "Since when does a talk involve weapons, ma'am..?"

Aria did not offer an answer. She had turned her head to one side and began to cough into her scarf, her hand curling protectively around the rings that were gently deposited into her hand. While Atropos wasn't her weapon, she wasn't going to drop her. She continued to hold her hand out. It wasn't to offer Candace the rings back, however Aria also was not the sort to disrespectfully dump a weapon into her pocket. "This is the sort of talk," Aria finally answered, "That I hope that I will not have to repeat to you again. I know what you did after Allan's mission. Lance was doing his job and his duty, unlike a certain intermediate trainee. I don't think you quite understand our position, Candace." Aria paused as a fit of coughing shook her. Her shoulders continued to shake after she was done, but not with sickness. "We are the bottom of the barrel. I would like to think that my division is above the petty disputes of other divisions. But let's stop lying to ourselves and face the truth: we are below them. We are nothing. The only reason for our existence is because we aren't wanted, Candace. We are the ones who are notified five minutes before a mission that we're needed to fill in for a hunter who has a headache for a month-long external mission. We are the ones who are expected to be able to fill in any role as if we had trained all our life in that division. We rely on the other divisions more than you can even fathom or believe. Where do you think we would be if not for them? I'll tell you: we would still be in the pods. If we were lucky. Most likely we would've never awakened from our trials, quietly killed off before valuable resources were wasted on us." Aria's voice hardened. "I don't care that it was a trainee, Candace. We of all the divisions can't afford to have petty fights and arguments. You can't afford to alienate potential team members. You can't afford to make enemies. We don't get a choice in who we work with. Why do you think I was so desperate to get Lance? No other division would want him. We need someone to watch and pay attention to give us a small smidgen of a chance to be prepared. You know what would have happened if I didn't claim him?" The division leader took a step forward, her voice dropping low. "I would have had to kill him. Do you think being a Mist means we have opportunities? Oh, we get opportunities all right. We get to do the things nobody else wants to do. We're the lucky ones offered clean-up duty. Nobody wants to be the one to murder their former teammate because they can't function as a normal hunter anymore. Nobody wants to be the one to creep up on a former lover and drag a knife across their neck quickly. Nobody wants their last memories of that person to be picking up their cooling corpse and dragging it into a field to watch it burn then scatter the ashes. Nobody wants to own the hand that writes killed in action when you know damn well that they were murdered by that same hand." Aria took a step back and turned, her coughing coming in full force. Hey Candace, want to know what sort of idiot would pull a sick woman out of bed? Have three guesses as to who it was. When the coughing subsided, Aria stared into Candace's eyes. "I do not want to be the one responsible for killing you. Nor do I want to be responsible for your death from someone else because I was a piss-poor leader and didn't get you to understand first." The division leader pointed at what Candace was now equipped with. "You insisted on creating strife with a Life division trainee over a non-Mist. Very well. Who do you think makes the runic weapons? Who would repair your weapon should it sustain damage? You might recall what Caelius did to my own," she added bitterly, pausing long enough to cough. Her voice was beginning to grow hoarse. "Imagine the same happening to Atropos. What then? If you manage to piss off the Life division, you would be S.O.L." "As for the Sun division, it is not my place to comment on relationships. I will acknowledge that even Hunters need contact to remind us that we are human. What I will not tolerate, however, is when a relationship interferes with your duties. You are a Mist, Candace. How much time have you spent learning from that Sun? How much have you spent doing nothing? Time is a luxury that you need to be more aware of. As a Sun, he can fight his own battles. You do not need to fight them for him, nor should you." "I have issued you two runic sickles. They have no charge, no effect. You can use them in your hands, or attach them to the notches on the boots to mimic Atropos. It is not the best, however you are going to learn first hand why we rely on others. You are going to be completely and utterly alone, Candace." She paused, raising Atropos up to meet her eye level. "And before you ask, no, she will not be able to hear you." The hand was lowered, Aria's eyes focusing on the necklace Candace now wore. It should have looked familiar. "You will be provided a Fear shield by means of the necklace. You will have no Fear charge. You will run the Shadow Run alone." Aria paused, adding, "This is not training for the inner Mists. You are going to be truly alone. With the inners, we at least had each other." "Now. Go. Do not return until you are successful. If you are defeated, remove your necklace and grab another one that is waiting for you and go back in."

Aria's coughing had Candace moving closer, holding both runic weapons in one hand and putting a hand on her leader's shoulder. She really needed to get back to bed. Why couldn't whatever talk she'd been pulled out for happen with Candace being summoned to Aria's room instead? But the moment Aria uttered Allan's name she knew exactly what this was. The cheerful high she had been feeling from her adrenaline rush of successfully completing the shadow run in under five attempts dissipated instantly. This was her punishment, then. It was bad enough she was publicly humiliated and given critique and scolding and 'lessons' by all the trainees who had been on that mission, now her leader was here to punish her too. Candace winced as Aria fell into another coughing fit. "Ma'am, you should really rest.." Candace said gently, really wishing Aria would get this over with so she could go back to bed. Or at least sit, Aria! Please!
Her words made Candace stop and listen, but they were not ones she liked to hear. That was not fair. Their division was so much better than that. They were better than the bottom of the barrel. ********, what was Candace doing? She was single-handedly making her division look worse than everyone apparently thought it was already. Those...those things didn't have to be because they were nothing. Those very reasons could be why Mist was such a great division! Because they had to learn everything! They had to know all the duties! Not every division could do that, or handle that! Could a Sun handle being on the front lines and then being in a lab? Probably not! But they could! She opened her mouth to protest several times but thought better of it each time. Don't interrupt her. She needed to hear this. This was a harsh reality lesson Candace needed to hear. She had reached that same conclusion on her own not too long ago; if there was no Mist she would be dead. It hurt to think about.
Candace's heart stopped at the mention of Mist being the division that essentially forced hunters into retirement. They were expected to take out fellow hunters?! She wasn't sure she could do that. She was too close to these trainees. Could she kill Jordan? Robert? Madison? No. She couldn't kill Harrison. She couldn't kill Sasha or Gale or..or Jerry. Oh god no she couldn't do that. That was not fair. She reached out again as the woman began to cough harder. "Aria, please. At least sit down..have some water?" She offered her leader the bottle she had been given. Candace had been good and kept her coat on so she wasn't sick, though even if she had been would it really matter with Aria already ill? Though concern was replaced by shocked horror when Aria remarked about not wanting to kill her. O..oh god! Was that why she had these sickles?! To be given a fighting chance?! She looked down at the weapons. Create strife? She didn't create s**t! It had been Clerise who had...ugh. No one would listen to her anyway. It was petty. She needed to let it go. She had felt fine after doing the Shadow Run, having worked off her frustrations in a healthy manner for once. She hadn't gone to H for sex, she hadn't picked a fight with someone and sparred them until they were unconscious, she hadn't destroyed any areas of the compound like other people had, and she didn't harm herself. She just trained. She had to find something, that one specialty she could focus on. She couldn't be inadequate. She couldn't be a cause of stress. But it seemed no matter what she did she ended up ******** everything up. ******** it all.
Jerry could fight his own battles...but..but trying to defend him just came so naturally. It happened without a second thought! This was hard...
Completely and utterly alone...not even Atropos. It had been nearly a year since she didn't even have Atropos' voice in her head, the thought actually made her uncomfortable. So that was it? Perform the shadow run without any assistance? That...that couldn't be so bad. Candace sighed. "Yes, ma'am." Candace turned away to head back into the portal, but she stopped just before stepping in. She turned, a small frown on her lips.
"Before I go in...Aria..this is not a critique on your leadership but perhaps...if you stopped believing yourself and your own division to be 'the bottom of the barrel' and 'below everyone' you would be a lot happier. I for one don't believe us to be that way. We can do everything, that is impressive not pathetic. To be able to be ready for something in five minutes, to be able to do things solo without the need for a very large team is something to be commended not ridiculed. We can do things other divisions can't or don't want to do, which in my opinion actually makes us stronger and better. I am proud to be in Mist, because I can give my attention to a variety of tasks and duties. If we let go of this preconception that everyone has placed upon us, things could run smoother. We shouldn't believe we are nothing or that we are below everyone else on this island. If we don't believe we are the best of all five divisions, then we are at least on equal footing with them. From what I've seen each division runs differently, we shouldn't compare ourselves to them nor should we try. It's unnecessary stress." Candace finally smiled, gripping the handles of the runic sickles tightly in her hands. "I can't promise my performance in there will be perfect, or even good, but I will do my best because I am a Mist. And I'm proud to be a Mist. When I was put in this division Caelius said I was inadequate," The word was spat out with bitterness. "But after being here I don't believe that to be true. I don't fit in any other single division. I'm too ******** awesome for that." Her smile became a grin as she gave Aria a thumbs up.
"I'll be back when I finish this. I won't disappoint you again. Just relax and rest while I'm gone, okay? Take a nap or something."
And with that Candace stepped into the portal, swallowing hard as her air of confidence wavered. She was alone. Completely alone.

ATTEMPT ONENo Atropos. No..Atropos. You can do this. Candace took a deep breath and gripped both sickles tightly in her hands. She was nervous, her hands were shaking and her heart was pounding so loudly she could hear and feel it in her head. You can do this, Candace. Prove to Aria you meant what you said and believe. Prove to her why Mist is not the bottom of the barrel, why Mist was not the dumping grounds division. The doormat. The bottom of the hierarchy. Candace turned one weapon so the blade was toward her and the other so the blade was pointed away. They were lighter than she thought they would be. She could do this. She was ready. The shadows came at her and Candace didn't allow herself to hesitate. She had no weapon to guide her, to offer her tips and warnings and work in tandem with. She had to do this alone. She turned on her heel and planted her feet firmly on the ground to keep herself in place, holding one hand behind her and one in front of her before she quickly turned on her heel again. Seven shadows cleared, slashed in two halves. She ran down the tunnel to the next wave. Status Wave: 1 Attack Dmg: 7 Total Shadowlings taken out: 7 Recoveries left: 0

Seven was nice and all but she would never impress Aria with constant mediocre performances. She needed her leader's approval. Candace jumped, her feet planting themselves into the back of a shadow close to the floor and then using it as springboard right before it dissipated into fear. Momentum, momentum gain mome--got it! She turned using her leg and slashed right through a particularly nasty shadow, reaching down to hook one of the sickles into the boot as Aria had said she could before dropping to the floor. She put her weight into one leg, the other one extended out with her foot pointed much the way she would while using Atropos. She put her weight into the ball of her foot and spun herself with one hand, using the other to slash at several more shadows with both her hand and her foot. Once that was cleared she ran some more. She was feeling a new kick of adrenaline from all of this. She could do this. She could pass it on her first try! Status Wave: 3 Attack Dmg: 12 Total Shadowlings taken out: 26 Recoveries left: 0

She could see the light at the end of the tunnel through the movements of the shadowlings. She was almost there. Just a few more! It was unnerving to do this without Atropos! Candace instinctively moved like she was about to do a kick or a flip only to remember there was no bladed boot on her foot. One of the shadows knocked her down and she hit the floor with a grunt. s**t! No! Nonononoonono! Candace brought her hands together, blades pointed up, and then pulled them apart to effectively rip the shadow above her in two. It burst into fear and she grinned, reaching underneath two shadows as she moved onto her knees and then suddenly stood up, slicing the two shadows vertically in half. This felt almost as good as earlier when she had just been venting her frustrations! A shadowling came up behind her and tried to pin her against the wall only to lose its head. Two more shadowlings met the same fate. Status Wave: 4 Attack Dmg: 6 Total Shadowlings taken out: 32 Recoveries left: 0

There it was! The end! Candace nearly cheered until the light of the portal was overcast by shadows approaching her and blocking her way. Oh hell no. This time both blades were clipped to the boots she was wearing as she ran right for them. They didn't scare her! Hell no! It wasn't as impressive as the flips she would do with Atropos but she managed a cartwheel and a twirl with one leg kicked up. ******** yeah cheerleading like a boss. The shadows dissipated and the glow of the portal lit the tunnel for her. Sighing with relief, Candace grinned as she stood tall and walked out of the tunnel with all the confidence of a trainee who had just cleared the shadow run on her first try without her bonded weapon. "All finished, Aria. I believe I cleared forty of them that time." Candace called out as she stepped into the hall, looking around for where her leader had gone. Candace's insisting for rest and water were met with a quick shake of her head before Aria continued her lecture, determined to not stop until she delivered her message. She didn't like to have to say it. It was an aspect of the Mist division that Aria wanted to keep hidden, to keep it swept under the rug only for those higher up in the division to learn about. But then again, they were down one Mist; it seemed only fitting to tell another to replace the one that was lost, wasn't it?
It was wrong. Aria needed the numbers in the Mist. It didn't matter that she was hesitant and shy around crowds, and that she was personally unsure of what to make of their newest recruits. Hell, one of them melted all of the ice cream they kept in their refrigerator. Aria didn't even know where to begin with that one. What were you supposed to tell them? That the ice cream was only for women for their time of the month? It was an awkward topic that Aria considered once, giving up in order to lightly beat her head against the table she was sitting at in hopes that the blush would go away.
She didn't want to lose them. She didn't want to lose another one. Losing a Mist to a transfer was okay. Aria could at least still see them and give them a friendly nod. Possibly call on them later for additional help understanding an aspect of their division. But to lose them to a stupid mistake? To have to put someone down herself? No. Aria did not want to consider it.
So here she was, lecturing the trainee. Did she say too much? Aria watched Candace, hating herself for having to speak of things she would rather not speak of. She hated Candace for forcing her to do this, to wake up to a message from Lance. If Aria didn't do it, she did not want to think of who would. Lance? Lance was still a Sun hunter at heart, and would have given her a Sun's punishment. It was up to her, or from someone outside of the division.
But it didn't come to that. She was here, and while her words hurt, she was able to get her message across.
Or at least part of the message.
As Candace spoke, Aria shook her head. "We do things because we are forced to," Aria told the air as Candace left. "Because I was forced to. I was the only one left." Aria considered, then raised Atropos up to stare at the rings. "And you will not tell her that," she ordered. "It is not you who is being punished; it is your hunter. Do not force yourself to her side. She has a lesson she needs to learn, one that I do not think I can teach." Aria sighed, using her free hand to press against her forehead. "Ugh, feverish still. I need to request a favor from you," she added quickly, turning her attention back to the rings. "Keep a closer eye on her. Just holding you here is punishment to you as well when it isn't supposed to be. It isn't like before, when I was without Sym for a week because of-"
Aria cut herself off with a cough. "You're probably still mad at me, aren't you?" It was awkward, standing with another hunter's weapon. It was like being in an elevator with a stranger, pretending that the other person wasn't there or sneaking glances at them out of the corner of your eye. "Then again," Aria continued, "I don't think you can even hear me until Candace gets back. Guess my secret is still safe, then."
Hush, I have enough on my mind as it is.
Aria waited in silence, standing. She refused to show weakness by sitting down. She would wait for Candace, then afterwords retreat to all the way back to her suite and crash in her bed. She liked that plan. Perhaps she would even resist the bed long enough to change into her sleepwear before crawling into her bed. No, wait -- she had better check her bed first for any creepers, then fall into it. Yes.
Aria glanced up as Candace arrived, giving her a nod. "Good job. Perhaps you might make a good solo operative. In the meantime, here," Aria held out Atropos towards her to take back. "You are finished here. Please remove your gear and return it to the Labs for me. Oh, and one more thing."
The division leader looked around, then took a step closer to Candace and lowered her hoarse voice. "The next time you have a disagreement with a trainee, express yourself when there aren't any witnesses. That is, out on a mission with no one else around. Hide the evidence, make sure there's no witnesses, and do a good enough job so that they won't blab about it later. Okay?"

Ugh, Aria was still standing. She had been hoping the leader would take her health into account and at least leaned back against the wall but she did nothing of the sort. Candace frowned, gently dropping the sickles onto the bag Aria had offered them in and picking up the towel she had dropped to wipe away more sweat. It as harder work not having Atropos! She'd be happy when she had her back in her possession. Though she did appreciate the compliment, it brought a smile to her face again. So she could solo. She was so happy to hear something positive, a pleasant encouragement that she wasn't a complete ******** up. She'd be okay. This day was going from terrible to good again thanks to her leader. "Thank you, ma'am." She gasped with delight as Atropos was held out to her an she quickly reached out to take her, putting the rings on with the happiest grin and kissing each of the rings. "Ohhhh! I missed you~!" Atropos sighed contently. I missed you as well. Don't you ever hand me over to anyone ever again! Do you hear me?! Despite the scolding she still sounded relieved and Candace was still smiling down at her rings, looking the happiest she'd been in weeks. It hadn't been long but not having Atropos' presence in her head was so unnerving.
Candace nodded and took off the necklace as ordered, reaching down to get the boots off and replace them with her sneakers until Aria came up close and whispered to her. What she said made Candace's eyes widen and the woman stood straight again, looking shocked by what her leader was giving her permission to do. Was she seriously saying what she thought she was saying?! If her earlier statement as any indication...yes, she was. Candace swallowed hard and gave a slow nod. "Understood." She would not be doing that to anyone anytime soon, especially as a trainee. She couldn't do it. She refused..
She was quiet after that, removing her borrowed boots and putting her sneakers back on. The boots, the necklace and the sickles were packed in the bag which she carried from her shoulder, straightening herself out with a sigh and looking Aria up and down. She looked terrible. "..I'm sorry you had to come out here for this. I won't disappoint you again." Oh, Candace had learned her lesson. She would not be making that humiliating mistake again. Hell no. "Will you at least let me escort you back to your room to make sure you get there okay? You look awful..." She wouldn't feel comfortable leaving someone so sick alone. What if she fainted on the way there and got sicker being unconscious outside? Or in the hall? It wasn't safe. Candace didn't like it.

"I will be counting on it," Aria replied, "Deus Ex isn't a hobby or club, something you can pick up then drop at any time. Our lives are bound to our duty from the moment we create a bond with our weapons." But she knew that; Aria was repeating herself at this point, wasn't she?
Aria shook her head at Candace's request, trying to wave the trainee off. "I look worse than I feel," A lie, "But I am confident I'll be just fine. I've been worse off." The division leader paused, racking her brain. Was that it? She believed so. It was difficult to think when her body craved rest. "I believe that is everything. Unless you have any lingering needs or worries concerning yourself...?"
