Your preference list: doe nine, doe ten, doe three, doe five, doe eight
Totoma name: Bites-Twice
Personality Concept in three words or less: indefatigable, relentless, determined
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:

She was not the strongest, or the fastest, or the smartest. She was not the bravest or the cleverest or the wisest. She was not even the most resourceful. But she never gave up.

She knew when the battle started that she could not win. Her opponent was full-grown, a hardened fighter who had defeated many Totoma in battle and had the scars on his skin and the cracks in his horns to prove it. She, on the other hand, was small and wiry, untested in battle, still nameless. She had no false hopes of gloriously defeating her foe.

Still, she did not intend to go down without a fight. Bloody and half-beaten she lay, knowing she couldn't last another rush from her opponent. But when he wheeled around and came thundering back toward her, head lowered, she was ready. At the last minute, she rolled aside, her mouth snapping desperately for the soft spot under his jaw. Her teeth found purchase and she clamped down, tasting blood. With the last of her energy she bit him -- twice.

Totoma name: Asks-Again
Personality Concept in three words or less: stubborn, hostile, impassioned
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:

"What did you call me?" The buck's voice was harsh, cutting, fierce. His eyes burned with just-subdued rage, the bitter product of years of nameless shame.

The other Totoma turned, shocked, and raised his brows. "You don't want to know," he responded cockily, a mean smirk twisting the corner of his mouth.

The nameless one growled, fuming with anger. His words were clipped, sharp -- but he asked again. "What. did. you. call. me?"

Cruel laughter glittered in the eyes of the other Totoma. "Coward," he hissed.

With a snort of anger, the nameless one stomped a cracked hoof and charged. He didn't have to ask again.

Your preference list: Doe: Five, three, eight, ten, nine
Totoma name: Strikes-from-the-sky
Personality Concept in three words or less: Merciless, Cold, Calculated
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: She eyed her opponent through the puffs of snow that their hooves kicked up as they circled each other. This was a hard battle, and her opponent did not deserve an honorable fight. Her gaze was as cold as ice as she charged, horns locking, pushing and straining… close enough. The eagle streaked down through the sky with a piercing shriek and the female backed up as large powerful wings crossed overhead. As predicated the angry bird of prey targeted the male Totoma that had been pushed closest to the nest. She watched, satisfied, and waited for the chance to make the final blow.

Your preference list: Buck: four, two, six, seven, one
Totoma name: Always-charges-first
Personality Concept in three words or less: Boastful, impulsive, dim-witted
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: He was named, over time, for one simple fact… he was always the first into battle. With a bellow he would through himself first into any test of strength. When it came to a one on one fight, his opponent would be assured of who would make the first move. He really was rather predictable. But he was proud of his strength, and was keen to prove himself over and over again. He always charges first, his family would say as they talked and laughed amongst themselves… and indeed he does.

Totoma name: Neverdale
Personality Concept in three words or less: Elder Sage
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
Neverdale was a proud warrior in his younger years, headstrong and fierce in the face of danger. He’s the eldest of the group but had yet to choose a name for himself. His eyesight began to fail him but he seemed only encouraged by this misfortune. He stubbornly refuses to acknowledge his aging body and continues to persevere. Neverdale was given to him as a somewhat cryptic jibe at his outright refusal to descend into the valley of his growing age.

Totoma name: Boulder Chaser
Personality Concept in three words or less: Determined, Loyal
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: (using She but could go either)

She wasn't the smartest, who would chase these large rocks when they came crashing down the mountain sides? It start when she was born, small pebbles at the time, slowly making way for the larger ones. Her stamina built up and soon she could pass the fleeter Totomas. She ran and jumped with the boulders, leading them where she wanted them.

Totoma name: Blind Faith
Personality Concept in three words or less: Fun Loving, protective
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:

He always trusted the others of his herd. It wasn't the smartest or best of ways to get a name, but some how his faith that something would be there to stop him hasn't failed him, yet. It was really on the way to meet those in the swamp his name was earned. Walking along near a cliff, backwards of all things, his hooves slid and he started to fall, Blind knew something would be there to stop his deadly drop. Sure enough, a small and sturdy outcrop was just far enough that it appeared he was gone.

Totoma name: Speaks Once
Personality Concept in three words or less: Laconic, reliable, practical
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
Speaks Once came by hir name late in life, having seemed perfectly content with being Nameless. Some wondered at hir silence and lack of ambition. Others wondered if the Nameless totoma was mute or slow. But instead, it seemed that they were saving themselves up for one opportune moment -- and it came on the journey to the swamp, when others, tired from the journey, nearly blundered unknowingly into a river full of caiman. The only thing Speaks Once has been known to say out loud is "Stop" -- but it saved more than one life.

Totoma name: Stands-Watch
Personality Concept in three words or less: Aggressive, watchful, fearless
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
Stands-Watch earned their name on the night they also could (should) have died -- after the rest of the herd ate themselves into a stupor after finding a particularly thick patch of tundra berries, Stands-Watch was the only one left awake when the other tribe came with their eagles, intent on taking the berries (and maybe more) for their own. The totoma proved their worth by killing one cowardly male and holding the line, as it were, until help could come.

Personality Concept in three words or less: Cantankerous, Tenacious, Selfless
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: When the winter snows finally let up and the long nights begin to shorten, the season of war is upon the Totoma. Pursues-Far’s tribe, hoping to get the jump on their enemies, pushed forward before dawn searching for their resting grounds, but were quickly spotted by an enemy scout. Though several tribeskin immediately pursued, the scout was fast and outpaced them. Soon the pursuers gave up and turned back to rejoin the fighting force, all but Pursues-Far. She continued tenaciously on the trail and eventually caught up to the scout, who couldn’t maintain his initial pace. She ran him down and subdued him, keeping him from warning his tribe, and by noon her tribe had won the lands, and Pursues-Far had won her name.

Totoma name: Chases Eagles
Personality Concept in three words or less: Prideful, Showoff, Brave
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:

Once, at a meeting the doe, who had weathered only two winters, boasted that she could run faster than all those present. The others first laughed. For she had only seen two winters, was practically a child. But the doe stood her ground. "It's true." She insisted. The others snickered and challenged the doe to a race across the taiga.

So she ran, and sure enough she pulled ahead of the others. She ran faster than them all. It so happened that an eagle was flying overhead and an observing elder said, "See how the young one chases the eagle." Since then she has been known as Chases Eagles, a prideful doe who is not afraid to show off her speed.

Totoma name: Wolf Skull
Personality Concept in three words or less: Stoic, Proud, Hostile
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:

In the long winter when the deer are scarce, sometimes the wolves turn to the Totoma for prey. And sometimes, in the long winter, the Totoma and the wolves fight in the snowbound land. Totoma are formidable opponents, dangerous ones too. But desperation drives wolves to do crazy things. And though strong and hardy, wolves travel in packs and Totoma travel alone.

Once, a nameless buck as white as snow was attacked by a wolf pack. It is said that he slayed three wolves, injured two and scattered the pack. The blood stained his fur and horns so deeply, nothing could wash it out. And the territory that he marked as his own, the borders are said to be marked the the skulls of wolves.

Totoma name: Fells-Trees
Personality Concept in three words or less: Outta my way
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: The river mocked their tired, bedraggled group. Dark water had claimed the first few to attempt swimming across, dragging their heavy bodies underneath silent waves. The weary tribe resigned themselves to several more days travel. But one of their number glared at the river, thoroughly displeased. With an irritated snort, she pawed the ground and launched her body across the snow, her hard head making contact solidly with an old, tall tree. Again and again and again she backed up, raced forward.
The old tree eventually realized her stubbornness and groaned its defeat, crashing across the river. She turned to her family with a steely eye and an impatient grumble, and walked across the river.

Totoma name: Headbutt
Personality Concept in three words or less: Thick-skulled
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
(writing as a buck, but works either way)
This sturdy totoma was among the smallest of the latest batch of youngin's but determined as he was, with age he also grew bigger, stronger. Putting on weight in muscle, he tackled every problem he ever came across in the only manner he knew how: head first. And when it came to the journey to the swamp, his time to shine appeared. A creature of a sort they had never seen before prowled out of the darkness toward the party. It snarled as blood dripped from its long fangs, getting ready to attack the totoma in an attempt to find its next snack. Without a second thought the buck ran head-first, brow lowered into the attacker, and before it knew what hit it, the beast lay cold at his feet, having snarled its last threat. And though the creature would not have stood a chance against the entire troupe of Totoma, the buck earned his name for the amusing tale of the single hit that brought down the nasty creature that had foolishly tried to attack them. A simple headbutt.

Totoma name: Together
Personality Concept in three words or less: Inventive and Resourceful
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
(written as a doe, but works either way)
Quiet and shy, this doe will never be caught in the spotlight of her own will. Just as any totoma, she will stand tall and fight when she needs to, but it's not what she truly excels at. What she's really good at is bringing things together and making them into something useful. And that is exactly the act that earned her her name during the expedition to the swamp. Having just found their way to the edges of the swamp, the land suddenly reached an incredibly mushy section that had been deemed impassable. As the team settled in for camp for the night there was talk of having to trek great distance to get around this sucking mud. The doe, meanwhile, had not given up yet. She ruffled about in the surrounding area a while, systematically pulling limbs and even some small trees together. Once she deemed there to be enough, she pushed them together, side by side and began to weave some of the flimsier branches in between, wrapping them into one consistent piece. When she finished, she pushed the combined wood toward the sucking mud, intending to use it as a bridge. What the others had deemed uncross-able now had a sturdy-ish path leading to the other side. For having brought a new solution to the problem, the doe earned her name by doing what she did best: Bringing things together.

Totoma name: Avalanche (or Snowslide if I can’t use Avalanche)
Personality Concept in three words or less: Cautious, dependable,
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
The weary Totoma locked eyes with his opponent, daring her to come closer. He didn’t have to wait long – with a warrior cry, she sped towards him, a fierce glint in her eyes. Startled, he side-stepped, but was too slow, grunting as her horns rammed against his body. He lashed back, twisting his horns into her neck. The doe snarled angrily and retreated, intending to run at him again. This time however, he was faster. With his own blood-thirsty cry and his head bowed down, the buck thundered towards her – hooves pounding, heart thudding, blood coursing… and yet, it wasn’t just that anymore. The rumbling grew louder and his opponent turned towards the sound. She looked in amazement as the tier of snow beneath them began to crumble and move, barrelling down the mountain. She was distracted, and the buck charged forward, ramming her cleanly in her side. She yelped as she fell, and he stood, triumphant at last.

Personality Concept in three words or less: determined, headstrong, relentless
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
The journey began with a sizable collection of Totomas, far greater than the number that reached the swamps. Despite peril after peril, be it unknown terrain, violent shifts in the weather, a gnawing hunger that reached one's core, vicious attacks from unfamiliar creatures, this totoma refused to return home to the icy Norths. Though the dead littered the path behind them, this totoma continued, head held high, unmindful of the piteous death-whimpers from fallen kin and the longing bleats of the heartsick.

"Return if you must, but I will push forward."

Totoma name: Dirt Licker
Personality Concept in three words or less: Simple, stubborn, and slow.
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:

With a home-territory primarily covered in snow and ice, such earthy-things as grass and dirt were rarely seen by the Totoma. Until they ventured south, anyway. The climate changed subtly with each careful hoof-fall, shoots of bright green bursting through sun-weakened patches of splotchy, dirty snow causing a ripple of hushed exclamation back through the herd. Farther and farther they went until the lead Totoma stopped without warning. Each member of the travelling herd collided with the beast in front of them, sending tempers flaring- what was the meaning of this? Shouldn't they continue on? But there was something incredible in their way; a startlingly vibrant flower, alone in a wide patch of dirt. They'd never seen anything like it before! Well, one particularly swarthy buck shouldered and headbutted his way to the front of the procession to see just what was the holdup... and with utter disregard for the flower, licked the dirt.

Totoma name: Three Nights
Personality Concept in three words or less: resourceful, patient, serious
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: The totoma’s tribe moved often, and one such time occurred as the totoma matured from an awkward but hardy youth to an adult. The tribe moved as a group and did not stop for stragglers, because they were a tribe of strong totoma. So it was that when the totoma slipped down the slope of the mountain, having neglected (for once) to properly seek its footing, no member of the tribe turned to help. Instead, they all took care to avoid the particular patch of unstable pebbles the totoma had failed to notice, and assumed that the totoma would seek out a life alone. The totoma spent that night in a cave, and felt very much alone. The next morning the totoma discovered that the cave was very near to the den of a bear, which quickly became enraged at the totoma’s proximity. So the totoma ran, heading in the direction of the tribe’s hoofprints (luckily, it had not snowed in the night, and the tribe was large enough that their hoofprints were recognizeable). The second night, the totoma pushed together some rocks and slept between them for shelter. In the morning the totoma foraged – the totoma had not eaten the previous day, and felt too weak to hunt. The totoma ate sturdy, filling roots and took nothing more when the totoma felt full – more food could be found. On the third night, the totoma dug a hole in the snow and burrowed for sleep. In the morning the totoma hunted, and at midday, the totoma found the place where the tribe had settled. The totoma spent the fourth night sharing the spoils of the hunt and relishing in the name that the totoma had, finally, earned.

Totoma name: Landed
Personality Concept in three words or less: reckless, devoted, optimistic
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: On their way down the mountains, the totoma played a game to practice their battles (for they knew not what they’d find when they reached the bottom) – two totoma charged at one another, horns first. Because of the terrain, it was considered honorable for the weaker totoma or the totoma on unsteady ground to stand down and step aside at the last second. The totoma’s opponent had already seen fit to do so. The totoma, though, did not stop and challenge another: instead the totoma charged ahead, off the edge of the cliff’s pathway. This would’ve been disastrous if not for the totoma’s sense of balance – the totoma in question landed with all four hooves planted firmly some two meters below on a thin ledge and looked back up at the tribe with pride.

Your preference list: Doe Five
Totoma name: Fall-to-Fly
Personality Concept in three words or less: Three legs? Bettered.
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name:
Before it happened, she was remarkable only for wrong things: she whimpered at the biting cold, stumbled on the snowy crags, a joke of a Totoma. She volunteered for the journey not for valour, but escape: the dreamt greens seemed more inviting. Even so, she feared homesickness, and thought to steal an unwatched eaglet to quell it, for, of the mountains, she loved the eagles' soar best. She crept high to avoid judging eyes, but as she closed upon the young, it came: the most dazzling eagle; she forgot all and leapt to conquer - right off the cliff. The hind-limb that met ground first shattered under the rest of her, she could only wait for death. She did not die; she was found, fed water, mocked - but she had changed. The day of departure, she took her place, her presence scorned - this trek could not afford a cripple, her death would be upon her alone. The first weeks, their words proved true: she fell far behind, dragging her useless limb as the other three struggled across harsh terrain - but slowly, she learned to make three work like four; she grew strong. All the confidence she never had came to her now - for what worse could she know than that fall? On three legs she soared, and fought to the fore. One night as they briefly rested, the most senior said, "It appears you are not as useless as I had thought. You had to fall to fly like the eagle, but there you are." She did not realise the honour bestowed till morning broke and those near greeted her, for the first time, like a comrade, "Good day, Fall-to-Fly!" Then, she smiled.

Totoma name: Flower Stomper
Personality Concept in three words or less: independent, intelligent, irritable
Short paragraph about how your Totoma came by their name: The doe had never cared much for romantic attention. It hadn't been too intolerable in the frigid mountains, where survival took priority over affection, but then she joined the Totoma who had decided to travel south. Now the warmer temperatures and increasingly fertile landscape had begun to turn the Totomas' attention to each other, and a particularly obnoxious suitor had taken to bringing her exotic flowers every day. She put up with it, at first, but as her generally cold demeanor failed to ward the buck off, she became more and more irritated with him. Finally, one day she snapped. "This is what I think of you! And this is what I think of your stupid flowers!" she shouted, throwing the flowers down and stomping them into the ground. The buck stared at the squashed flowers, mortified, while the other Totoma who happened to be in their vicinity shuffled around awkwardly. Finally, one of her friends came up to her, smiling, and said. "Well, Flower Stomper, I think you've found a name, and may it warn those poor bucks to think twice before bothering you."
