I'm not sure mercenary is the best way to go. I'm not sure we want a guild full of amoral sellswords. I really think a national military is best.
I would agree that being a Navy/Marine rapid reaction force would be awesome, but you have a valid point on the fact that Novus is more Army/Air Force. That's why I think we should be an Army/Air Force with non-playable Navy support units, with the option to form a playable Navy later on if recruitment is up enough.
I also don't think we should use the real world. We'd have to get involved either in controversial conflicts that could be decisive or do everything in a vaguely fictional third world country. Better to just use a fictional world with heavy use of these. Personally, I kinda like the idea of being a fantasy counterpart of Australia, but with more coastal mountains, lakes, and rivers, which would mean the ability to support a much larger population than the real life Australia can. We'd have large populations from all over the world do to being an immigrant country, and do to a comparatively large population (say, 120 to 150 million) we'd be able to support a fair sized military. We may well see protecting the smaller "Pacific and Indian Islands", "Southeast Asia", and parts of "Africa and South America" as our duty, which is why we have the well trained rapid reaction force that the members of Novus serve in. The name Novus could come from it being a new experiment by the heads of the military or representing a new era of peace.

We could be more like "Task force 121" or something and be an international/national task force designated to certain jobs and whatnot, and that is always an active combat unit for small scale incursions rather than be a full sized military unit or something, in other words being a smaller unit within a larger unit.
Grenada is a good example of this, as are the rangers.
At any point in time, certain units could be sent out to fight a smaller force (anywhere from 10-10,000 people) in some random place in the world, for hostage situations to who knows what.
Rangers are ideal for their mountain, artic, desert etc. multiple environment training, but then again so are Navy Seals.
You might see say, 10,000 marines pop up on an Island somewhere but it's like, it's not a full army or anything.
Generally in numbers like that they aren't special forces, but aren't necessarily regular troops; commandos is a more appropriate name that comes to mind. People that excel at what they do, maybe getting 20 confirmed kills, a bunch of medals etc. but they don't ever really join the special forces per say. Like a sergeant from experience or something.
We could be even smaller, like the marine FAST unit, Which is basically a unit of a few hundred soldiers who can respond to a group of a few hundred terrorists or so rather than sending in like, at most, two platoons of Navy Seals or 40 soldiers, whom are generally tasked in low amounts anyways and spread out all over the world.
