There was an instinctive urge trying to take over Rei at that moment. One that begged him to argue, to find excuses, to point how some of his older children were so much like him in many ways. Even now he could see it in these little cubs before him. But the last thing he wanted was to push Musabari away even further and so he merely sighed quietly and remained silent.
It was startling to realize the son that physically resembled him the most might be the one who was most hurt and angry with him.
“I’m sorry, Musabari.” He said at last, unsure on how to proceed. “For what it’s worth, I’m never leaving again…” ...son. He couldn't bring himslef to say that last word.

NOTHING, he wanted to yell. It meant nothing, but if Musabari opened his mouth at that moment, the only thing that would have come out of it was a scream, and he couldn't do that. Not in front of the cubs. They were innocents in this. Most of them probably didn't even know that their father had been absent at one point. They were blissfully happy in their ignorance, and the last thing he wanted to do was to destroy that bubble.
Not that they would have minded. They were so young that they probably couldn't even begin to imagine what it would have been like, and because of that, they probably wouldn't understand. Still, something held him back, and for a while, he could do nothing other than glare and think about all the similarities that haunted him and his siblings.
Kam's very personality, his own golden coat... When it came down to admitting things, Musabari knew that he bore a striking resemblance to Rei, and try as he might to fool himself into believing that he was brighter, that he was the color of royalty, there was no mistaking the similarities.
He wished it could have been any other way.
"Well, don't," he said finally, his voice terse and thick with self-restraint. "I'll leave." He turned abruptly, ignoring the disappointed cries of his baby siblings. He couldn't deal with that right now. He couldn't stay at the den anymore. Tomorrow, maybe, he would return to apologize, but today... today he needed to be far, far away.

Rei’s head turned brusquely to face his son, a worried expression suddenly in place. Leave? What had he meant by that? That he was leaving now? That he would leave the pride…? No, Rei didn’t think he’d meant that. Musabari seemed to be far too devoted to the pride to actually consider leaving the Pridelands. He sighed once again, suddenly surrounded by a wave of disappointed faces.
“Shh shhh… it’s okay Kwende. Don’t make that face Akai, you’ll see him soon.” Well… that’s what Rei hoped as he glanced back at the older son who was walking away from him at that moment. He wondered if he should tell Mzuza about this conversation but finally decided that he'd like to work things out with Mu on his own. And he didn't want to worry Mzuza. So Rei put on his best happy face and turned to face the cubs again. "Alright! Let's play a game!" - FIN -
