She narrowed her eyes at him, did he seriously just call her a shortie, if she hadn't just sent him unconscious to the infirmary a while ago she would be doing that right now. Did you really want to be friends, Dakota, because Reine didn't think he was going about it the right way.
Whatever. The scowl stayed on her face as they walked towards the cafeteria, and it might have deepened a little more when she looked at what they were serving. And yet, as terrible as the food was, Reine supposed she was getting used to it- another occupational hazard of being a hunter trainee, perhaps, loss of tastebuds. Sighing, she grabbed a tray and walked along, picking up random items- a salad and a small sandwich, and some juice.
Homeschooled, huh? Now he mentioned it, Tori had been homeschooled as well, and she'd ended up pretty cool. Maybe guys were just stupid, Robert was as much proof of that as anything.
"I was pretty much alone growing up as well," she admitted. Moving halfway across the country, then spending most of her time studying, eventually getting sick of people making fun of her for being able to 'see things'. "You moved around a lot, though? Where've you been?" Reine had no recollection of ever meeting him, but maybe they'd been in the same area before, or something.
Picking a seat, she opened the container of salad, and poked at the lettuce with a fork. "I like, uh, yeah, I guess." She also rather enjoyed sparring, but he probably knew that already. What else was there... cute things, maybe? Reine was rather fond of small animals, especially fluffy ones, but she wasn't about to tell Dakota that, it would ruin her street cred. And of course, she liked music, but he would probably laugh at her if she told him she liked classical stuff. Or something.
"You?"

Dakota didn't seem to notice the change in her demeanor considering he kept letting her know just how short she was but, even after all that anyways, he was sure if she kicked his butt over something small like that, that he needed to teach her to loosen up.
Again, he didn't notice the disdain on her face as she got food. He was so busily piling his plate with as much as he could that anything else was lost on him. Whether or not the food tasted bad to Dakota was a different matter all together after all....he was a growing boy.
"That's sad." He took a bite of the food before contemplating, "Alone is...well really lonely after all. What about your twin? Petra?" Petra was a ranking if not scary member of his team. She took Badass ******** to the next level and was one of the few people he would really...really try to stay on the good side of. That and her man was a huge barge of a man who liked to fight.
"Mostly the state of Minnesota, took a few visits south to Idaho and Nevada and then East to Colorado and Texas. But mostly Minnesota." He thought of the long plains of the state and the cold winters. Cold winters, warm springs and even warmer summers. "I miss home sometimes." He said it and then regretted saying it. Homesickness was no place for a solider, a indisposable one at that to even feel.
He mowed down on what looked like a cheesy lasagna before tapping her bowl. "Eating would be better then playing with your food, plus it helps you grow." He grinned, "So reading is the only thing you like? Come on Reine, I swear on scout's honor that I won't use what you tell me for blackmailing purposes. Not that it would work seeing as you kicked my a**." He chuckled before blinking.
"Er. I guess...I like reading sometimes, I liked video games too but we don't have that much anymore..." He paused before shrugging, "I like music too, you know teenager likes though...." He waggled his eyebrows before looking around, just in case anyone overheard him, "I like all kinds. Country, rock, pop, classical. There was this violinsit that I was obsessed with for a while...er...let me dig out her name...Vanessa Mae!" He grinned before tapping his fork on his plate. "That's her name, she did a great Devil's Trill with a electric Violin."

Reine could only stare as Dakota piled his tray with food- well, maybe that was why he'd grown so tall, considering all he was eating. She'd been almost tempted to pick up a small serving of chicken wings, until she remembered they'd probably just go straight to her stomach or thighs instead of, well, helping her grow taller, and then she gave them one last longing look.
"It's not always lonely," she shrugged, nibbling at a cherry tomato. Or.. well, it had been for the most part, but Reine just didn't feel like agreeing with Dakota, especially not when he mentioned Petra. Her expression darkened considerably, and she glared at her salad again, viciously stabbing a tomato multiple times and staring at the pulpy mess it made. Ughhh. Now her appetite was ruined.
Way to go, Dakota, way to go. Another stab before she finally looked up at him, breathing out a small sigh. "I miss home, too," she allowed, even if somewhat frostily. "Just a little. Like once a month. Or once every two months. I don't even think about it that much anymore." He wouldn't get more details than that, and the life trainee wouldn't even smile at his joke, simply growling "I'll do that again anytime." Perhaps she really would, if she hadn't remembered Wilson and his advice, plus it probably wasn't Dakota's fault even for mentioning Petra, no wait, he should have known better, so it was his fault.
Or.. or.. something. Frustrated at her own inability to blame things on him, Reine sulkily reached for her glass of apple juice and drained it in a few quick gulps. She was really proving to be terrible company, and well, since Dakota seemed to be genuinely trying, she guessed she could afford to be a little nicer. Forcing a smile that ended up looking ridiculously awkward, she looked straight ahead, staring first at his shirt, then lifting her gaze to meet his eyes, genuinely surprised by his answer. He liked classical? He actually.. liked classical music? It wasn't something she'd expected from him, but it earned him some points- enough maybe to reset his 'score' to 0 from the negative it had been.
"I prefer acoustics," she shrugged. "And you can, uh, come over sometime and listen to music if you want. I got a phonograph last christmas, and some records"
Reine fidgeted a little with her fork again.
"Not that you have to or anything okay I mean you'd probably just be noisy and distracting."
She might have also felt the smallest pang of regret immediately after saying that, come onnn, Reine reminded herself, Dakota was trying to be nice, that meant she had to try too..

"No?" He said inbetween bites before swallowing. "I guess not but...I'd rather be surrounded by people then the shadows I use to see as a kid." Dakota frowned before shrugging, "It helped when I moved around though dealing with the little boogeymans as a kid. Even if I saw them everywhere I went." He took another bite before grinning. She was making a bloody mess of the tomato there, good to know. Looked like her and Petra were a touchy subject.
To that he offered a, "Sorry, next subject." Before stuffing his mouth full. Better to sit in silence then to keep pressing her about something she didn't want to talk about. "I guess I just mmiss my family the most." He didn't voice how she had people here she knew, who knew her from before their hunter life. He didn't want to tell her how lucky it was when most of the hunters came in without knowing each other. Again, a touchy subject.
"Er...Please don't, I like my a** and don't want to end up in the infirmary again for the week. Thanks." He sighed as that came back out testily. Was this how it was with the girls? He felt like he was losing ground on becoming even just friends with her.
He blinked as she looked at him with this dopey smile before awkwardly smiling back? Er...Wow that change was sudden.
"I like acoustics for songs that have a heavier feel to them. Ever tried listening to a rock song? A original one and then listen to the acoustics version? Artist in music can be so diversital like that. Though as far as Classic pieces go, I like string instruments more then anything." He grinned before blinking, "Sweet, I'll have to do-Oh hey..." His grin broadened, "Well yeah, It's not often that you get invited back for another time to get to know each other you know?" He blinked as he finished his food and checked his phone. Luckily he had maybe a few minutes to spare before he started his ritual training routine. Cocking his head, he looked at her before away. "If your done with your food, I can take you back to your room. It's almost time for me to get to training with Chama...Don't wanna fall behind everyone else now." He puched his food away and patted his belly, "Plus need to work off this food, I don't want it to stick to unsavory places...like my butt." He waggled his eyebrows at her.

The rest of the salad was finished off quickly, though Reine did not touch the mutilated tomato again. Bad memories, there. Not to mention it looked kind of gross. The life trainee spaced out a little, only to realise that Dakota was still talking.
Why was he spilling all his secrets, again? Reine looked over at him, slightly worried now. Maybe he needed to book an appointment with one of their resident psychologists or something, she really couldn't help him with his issues, like missing his family and.. things like that. It wasn't that she couldn't empathise, just that she didn't want to. They didn't have the time for it, as hunters. Some nights she still dreamed about her family, and in the morning, she'd wake up with tears all over her face.. but that didn't mean she needed or wanted to talk about it.
Still, she reached over and patted him awkwardly on the shoulder, before unwrapping the sandwich she'd picked up. Reine ignored his comment about the infirmary- if he couldn't win in a spar it was his fault, especially if it was in a fair fight. She did refrain from saying anything about it, though.
"I'm not really into.. rock," she shrugged. Mostly instrumentals, and random stuff she picked up from the radio. His reaction to her invitation, though, had her raising an eyebrow. Should she be regretting it..? While she didn't have anything against 'getting to know each other', it was the way he phrased it that rang alarm bells, so to speak. Becoming friends with someone had just, well, never needed to be this obvious of a process, even with most of the hunters she'd met on the island.. hadn't they just talked a little, hung out a little.. and that was it? She didn't really know.
The last morsel of sandwich was followed by another sip of apple juice. All in all that hadn't been too bad a meal.
"I can walk back on my own, though," she argued, standing up to clear her tray. Did he seriously think she couldn't, or something? "And it's not a good idea to exercise right after you eat, or you might wind up with appendicitis or something."

"That's too bad! Rock takes a lot of influences from Classical. Maybe one day, you'll come visit me and I can show you the beauty of it." He shrugged before watching her finish the salad and then the sandwich next.
"Sure? I don't mind walking you back..." He hesitated before nodding, "Nevermind, I'll uh let you be actually. Thanks for coming to lunch with me." He smiled before pushing away, "Really? That can happen?" He cocked his head before nodding, "Duly noted, Kay Reine, I'll take your advice and head back to my dorm instead."
He started to head away before pausing and then coming back and sheepishly looking at her again.
"Look if you ever need anything, or need help or anything, talk whatever...uh..." He rubbed his neck harder before looking away, "I'll....be here or something like that. I don't mind helping....if its you." He blushed and then speed walked away.
Very smooth Dakota...Very smooth.
