They were very close to finding the right combination. Obi watched as they narrowed their choices down to a couple different. She knew there was no rush for any mistake. Obi noticed one of the little bundles of plants, the woolly blue-curls was barely there on the table.
"......Lady Mandrake, Lady Era, have you decided to test your pairing of the plant? If they are not the right pair, the scale will be lopsided...but with the right pair, it will be balanced on both sides."

Ender frowned, mulling over the plants. "I see what you mean. Yeah, those are pointy, and... the stems look a little different, too. What about these two you have- the sage and the bay, I think? They have a different texture, but the leaves look pretty similar. And we should probably try something- I think maybe we have to take a risk together on this and give it a shot. After all, it's not like the scales will catch fire if it's not the right pair... right, Miss Obi?" The unicorn bit her lip. If they might light the scales on fire, then they'd have a serious problem. "And if we're wrong, we can just try again. If Miss Obi's willing to work with both of us this afternoon, I'm sure we'll hit it eventually!"

Mandrake froze and Obi's voice, not daring to look up from the samples though her eyes had widened at being called upon first. It took a minute for her words to sink in, Mandrake's gaze shifting slowly to the set of scales, and only when Ender explained how they would benefit did she manage a nod.
"R-right, right," she nodded, reaching over to nudge the scales closer to herself and Ender with her snout. They just had to remember this was still a beginner's class and they were both beginners. Where would either of them get if Obi threw them straight into the fire from the frying pan? Nowhere and dead, that's where.
Maybe that was a bit dramatic...
Pointing at the two Ender had held up with her unicorn magic, Mandrake indicating to the scales. "Let's try these two for now and we'll try each pair if it's wrong."

......Who in all of the five elements told these fillies that? Obi was now very curious about who told them those.......tall stories. She had a guess who it could be.
".......nothing will happen like that. It will not harm to try..."

Carefully, Ender laid the plant samples down on the scale, looking at Mandrake out of the corner of her eye as she did to see the earth phony's reaction. She seemed to know plants better than the unicorn, which was part of the reason why she was honestly thankful that they were sharing this lesson together. Her knowledge of magical theory was less of an advantage than actually knowing things about plants.
Biting her lower lip, she watched as the scales teetered. They looked like they were balancing!

Obi then smiled, stepping forward. The scales were showing her student's hard work of figuring out the plants. She used her magic to remove the object from the pouch.
"Congratulations Lady Mandrake, Lady Era. You found the two plants that help create this stone..."
From the pouch, a medium size stone of green that shined from within. It glowed, giving enough light to see everything down there in the basement.

While Ender worked, Mandrake bit her lip. She was sure these two were similar, but were they similar enough? Obi hadn't said identical by any means -- if she had, it wouldn't have been a fair test because none of them were identical -- but still her worries festered. Her small hooves shifted, clopping softly against the floor with nervousness.
The scales teetered, shifted, slowed...
...and balanced!
Obi's dark magic drew something gleaming and green out from a bag and Mandrake's eyes went wide. "Woooahh..." she announced, a bit more loudly than necessary. It was such a cool looking green! If the two herbs they found help create the stone, she had to wonder... "What is it? What's it for?" This lesson had been really cool, but she still had so many questions and doubts. All this magic stuff, was it really for an Earth Phony like her among two Unicorns?

We did it! We did it!" Ender practically pounced on the other filly, squeezing her shoulders in an uncharacteristically affectionate hug.She was happy to admit that the little earth filly's knowledge far surpassed her own. "Mandrake! You're fantastic! If you weren't here, I'd still be sorting plant samples!"
Just as quickly as it came on, though, the mood passed and she sobered up. Releasing the earth filly's shoulders, she quieted down and turned to face the tall dark unicorn "Yes, Miss Obi. What exactly does this stone do?"

Obi couldn't help it and laughed at their joy. She had a feeling these two would be fine in potion making.
"This is a stone that only glows for certain fillies..."
Using her magic, Obi broke it cleanly in two.
"Used for sources of light during lessons and.....to remember about today's lesson...."
She gave a half to Lady Era and Lady Mandrake. Even though it wasn't that big anymore, it still glowed brightly. Obi smiled as she carefully put away the unused plants.

Practically getting bowled over by Ender's sudden change of demeanor, Mandrake let out a shrill shriek which turned into one of excitement and then laughter, playfully nudging the other phony back until she was released and the two turned their attentions back to Obi. She didn't realize until now just how helpful her simple knowledge of plants could be. In truth, she didn't really think she knew that much but had learned a lot from this lessen anyway. Magic was still something beyond her comprehension, potions too, but now she knew she had a knack for something! Something just for her that it didn't matter what kind of phony she was. Earth, pegasus or unicorn, she could study plants and herbs and be helpful!
As she listened to Obi, her chest felt lighter and she gazed upon the green rock in their teacher's magic clutches proudly. It was like a badge or medal being awarded to them -- a really cool glowy one at that! Mandrake smiled broadly, orange eyes lit with delight. "Thank you, Miss Obi!" she spat quickly (and a bit loudly for the cramped basement), before snatching the rock from the air in front of her with her teeth. She would have to find someplace super special for this. Though she had to wonder, would it keep glowing forever? What a cool nightlight!

Ender levitated the stone with a tendril of her own magic. It glowed, just like she did. She was going to have to get it put on a chain- it would make a really nice necklace. "Thank you so, so much, Miss Obi! Maybe sometime we can both come back for another lesson?" The afternoon had been so educational- and in more ways than one. While she knew that horticulture wasn't where her true passions lay, it was certainly a very interesting subject. What a fantastic day!

Obi smiled as she started to put the rest of the supplies away.
" Your welcome....and of course, to get to the next step in alchemy."
Smiling, she put everything in its place as her students left the basement. Now if she could only figure out who poked into her shop last.......
