That was....such a difficult question to answer. And not because he was a slave. He was so tired of lying...so exhausted from his double life. And now with Tui back...and sharing the den of a warrior so often...it was enough to rend his heart in two.
And here was this probing, ruby-eyed storyteller, laying open his wounds without even knowing.
"Seraphin has been very kind to me," he said. "And I care for her deeply." She was one of his dearest friends, and one of the only living wolves who knew of his secret. It didn't make that secret any easier to bear.
He distracted himself by darting back into the den, once more bearing down on a fat gray rat.

Hmm... there was something about this situation. There was something more here. Something hidden. Something unsaid. She could practically smell it. Whatever it was, she was determined to find it.
"Kindness and care are lovely things," she said. "But they do not equal love. Is there one whom you love? One to whom your heart belongs?"
In pursuit of her curiosity, she was being less than delicate. Less than kind. Under normal circumstances, this might bother her. However, she was relentless when it came to learning. She would not back off just yet.

"My heart is not mine to give away as I please," he responded, dropping the dead rat at her paws. "My heart, like my body and mind, belong wholly to the pack."
There was an undeniable bitterness in his tone, as much as he tried to restrain it. Why was this female asking him this? What possible motivation did she have? Why did any of it matter?
Did she suspect him? Was that it? Was the guilt of his sin so deep and so obvious now that it stained his visage?
The mere thought of this brought the trembling back to his limbs, and he once more disappeared in the den, busying himself with the rats. Tears sprang in his eyes as he tore at the rats, and they squealed as they tried to escape. He couldn't let himself fall apart, not in front of a stranger...especially not a stranger who clearly had so little respect for his way of life. She didn't know what it was like here. She couldn't possibly know.

Such a simple question to stir such bitterness in this male. Did he love? Clearly he was not allowed to.
That sounded...truly miserable. To be so very possessed by a pack, to have so very little independence that even your thoughts are not your own? It sounded like hell.
Ignoring the rat at her paws, and his vehement extermination of the remainder, she spoke.
"But if your pack did not control you so, is there one you would give your heart to?" She smiled wryly, thinking of the cruelty that the warriors inflicted on their slaves, intentional or not.
"I would not be surprised if you preferred the attentions of males, the way these females behave. It is not as though it is unheard of."

His blood froze in his veins. The rat he pursued bit him, tearing away into its burrow beyond where he could reach. Blood welled at the wound, but he didn't seem to notice.
Attentions of males....
"M'lady means no offense, I'm sure, as you are not from this territory and our customs are strange to you." He spoke in careful, measured syllables. His legs trembled so much that he was afraid he might lose his paws out from under him. "But you speak blasphemies."
He willed the tears in his eyes not to spill over onto his cheek. He looked around, desperately afraid that someone else might be listening in. He tried to think of a way to escape this discussion before he broke down completely.

"Blasphemies? Not most places I travel. However, I apologize if I have offended you or your ways."
My, but he did seem upset by her words. Perhaps she was being a little too cruel to one who could not, by the customs of his own people, defend himself. At this rate, he might grow too upset to be any good to her. She had not intended to pick on someone who could not stand up for himself. He was a bit of a pushover, even for a slave. At least Chimera had some bite to him. Iosef was a little too soft. Perhaps she should leave him be.

Oh gods above, what if she talked to Tui next.
That was a thought that could make his blood run cold. He forced himself to meet her eyes, if only fleetingly, and there was resolve there, lurking behind the promise of tears. Iosef was stronger than he looked. He had survived this long, at any rate.
"Perhaps you should speak with our lead warrior, Varia. My sister. If you haven't already." He spoke carefully, measuring out each word, filling each with untold meaning -- hoping perhaps that she was smart enough to understand. "She might be able to...educate you...better about our ways. If you'll excuse me." He glanced down at his bleeding paw, looking slightly off-put. "I'd best tend to these rats, before they become more of a nuisance."

The lead warrior? Perhaps. Or perhaps not. She was not certain who she wished to speak to next, though this Varia should probably be on her list at some point.
Oh? Was he dismissing her? The thought amused her. Perhaps there was a little more to this male than she had given him credit for. Well, it was something to contemplate later. Right now, there were surely other wolves whom she could seek out.
"Good luck, then," she said as she rose and wandered off in search of her next target.
