He didn't move away this time, and she chuckled softly, dropping her hand back into her pocket. The sky was darkening quickly, but the soft glow of the moon provided enough light. Reine climbed up onto a nearby rock and sat there, arms crossed over her knees as she stared into the distance. The beach was so peaceful now, compared to what it had been like during the trial; the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the shore, too, helped calm her a little.

"I guess we don't really know," she murmured, turning back to glance at Otto for a moment. She couldn't afford to be unsure, though, and she certainly didn't want to think of herself as front line fodder, even if the higher-ups seemed to.

"It's natural, I guess. Survival of the fittest, and all that stuff." Everyone started from the bottom- probably years and years and years ago, Caelius and the Doctor had been trainees like them, as hard as it was to imagine that. And somehow or other, the two of them had clawed their way up to where they were now. Did she want to be there too, someday? Reine wasn't completely sure- there was nowhere to go but up, really.

"D'you ever wonder, though? About fighting them?"

Dark. It was dark. At the very least there was moonlight. Without that Otto was sure to be rendered into a humiliating state of helplessness. Still, despite the light, he was a little on edge. He stared at the sky with an obsessive intent, willing all clouds to stay away.

Survival of the fittest. As terrible a place Dues tended to be, it was much more interesting than home. Hopefully, one day, it might just be fulfilling too. He'd yet to have accomplished a single feat worth noting, yet.

"Fightin'em?" Otto asked, having lost track of the conversation. "What'rya gettin' at?"

She swatted at him. "Themmm," she repeated. "The monsters." What was she getting at? Reine wasn't sure she knew either- maybe she just wanted some sort of reassurance.

"What I mean is, it's a good thing, isn't it? That we're fighting them?" Killing them indiscriminately, hurting them, because surely, if it came to it, they would do the same back.

"D'you think they're all bad?"
PostPosted: Sat Jan 28, 2012 10:39 am

"Oh. Right." Otto knew that. He totally didn't think she was talking about fighting the division heads. Nope.

....yes he did.

Otto shrugged his shoulders, stared down at the sand by his feet and kicked at a shell. "Dunno, don't care. They're the enemy, right? Those things terrified me and made my life Hell. I'ma make their life Hell too." Otto snapped bitterly. They were the reason he was still scared of the dark at so late an age.

"The only reason they were nice to us back in that room was cause they thought we were one of them." And as such he took advantage of one of them when things got ugly. "They're all monsters."

She looked over at Otto a little worriedly- there was the usual grumpy, but this outburst seemed different from the normal. Reine almost wished, though, that she could say what he just had, and mean it as well.

They're the enemy.. that was true, and it had been made clear to them since the start. And perhaps Otto had a point- maybe they had been nice because they hadn't realised the children were hunters... but even when she'd returned to her normal form, even when Thackery realised what she was...

He had called her a friend.

Alynthe hissed at her warningly- Reine had decided to drop the subject after their talk, yes, but how could she fight while she was still unsure? Maybe Thackery was just an anomaly, a special case, the one monster that didn't mind humans. There was no telling if there were others like him, but even so, she expected those to be rare cases..

Lost in her own thoughts, it was a while before she realised she hadn't said a word back to Otto, and by then, she had no idea what she could say.

Huh. Reine got all quiet on him. Otto thought little of it, figuring it was a chic thing and just kicked at sand for a while. However, he was becoming increasingly uncomfortable. There was too little light, and the building seemed so far away in the waning moonlight. His heart rate started to rise a little higher as anxiety started to take over.

Otto finally huffed and started to limp away, getting out his cell phone to light his path. "It's ********' boring out here..." He grumbled defensively, a slight shudder in his tone.

They sat in silence for a while. Reine enjoyed it, really- it felt relaxing out here, but Otto seemed to be getting bored. Eventually he stood up, the action startling her, and limped off.

Picking herself up, she dusted the sand off her jacket and looked at him.

"Going to be fine on your own?" There was an odd tone to his voice, though she couldn't place it exactly. She wanted to stay out here a bit longer, but if he needed company, it was only fair that she walked back with him after dragging him all the way out here.

"No." He snapped back in a grouchy tone. He barely managed to control the volume of his pitch, the blackness ahead becoming overwhelming.

Dammit, why did he come along?

"Have fun with yer goddamn fresh air!" He grumbled, limping wearily into the darkness with nothing but the light of his cell phone to guide him.
Despite the cool air, his brow began to sweat.

Okay, there was something definitely wrong- with a sigh, Reine hopped off the rock, and followed the weak light in the distance until she caught up with Otto. He hadn't seemed that unhappy (and this was considering how unhappy the boy seemed to perpetually be) until now, so she hadn't thought anything of his grouchiness, but.. was that a hint of fear she'd just caught?

It made no sense, what was there out here to be scared of out here? Maybe she was reading it all wrong.. either way, some sort of sixth sense told her to stay with him.

"It's not fun anymore if you're ruining it," she shrugged. "You know, though, the path's pretty straightforward back to the campus, and holding a light out might attract strange creatures.."

Reine's presence both irritated Otto and helped distract him from the looming darkness. A double edged sword of sorts. However, he stopped dead in his tracks at her comment, snapping the phone shut. "R-really..?" However, even though monsters might see the light, not having it there made Otto feel horribly uncomfortable. His heart rate raised again, and he ended up opening the phone again just for the light it shone.

"B-big ********' deal. That's what Tenya's for.."

Huh.. she'd just been teasing him, but Otto looked like he was panicking, the way he reacted to her. In the silence she swore she could hear his heartbeat, unnaturally fast, but Reine dismissed it as just a figment of her imagination.

The way he was tripping over her words, though, she couldn't ignore. Frowning, Reine reached out to Otto, putting her arm over his shoulder- the only way she could think of saying 'it's okay' without possibly offending him.

"You've got me and Ally with you, too," she said, a small smile on her face- somehow she felt like he needed the encouragement. "C'mon, it's not a long way back."
PostPosted: Fri Feb 24, 2012 7:02 pm

The arm around the shoulder ploy. Clever girl. Otto cringed upon making contact, trying not to let himself shiver from fear now that she was so close. "Yeah, right.." He muttered in response to her help. She was right though. The walk was not too long. But as the light was so sparse, to him it felt like eternity.

Damn, stupid fear. It was bad enough that Eva knew about it. He wasn't about to let Reine know too.

A twig snapped in the distance, and Otto nearly jumped out of his skin. "s**t!...."

"Just a few more steps, c'mon." Reine was keeping up the encouragement, at least, pushing Otto ahead, not that it was particularly effective, considering the way the boy was reacting. "The faster we walk, the faster we'll get back, right?" It wasn't that she had any idea at all, still, what was bothering Otto, but he didn't seem to like being outdoors.. Well, whatever, she had his back while they were together, which meant she wasn't about to let anything happen to him.

She felt Otto jump at the snap of a twig, and her grip on his shoulder tightened. "There's nothing around but us," Reine murmured soothingly, reaching up to pat his head. "Look, you can see the compound already, we're so close to being back. Just keep walking, keep walking.."

If he didn't look so genuinely bothered by being outside the compound, Reine found herself rather fond of this Otto, all quiet and subservient and really rather adorable. If only he were like this all the time, they'd probably get along a lot better.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 08, 2012 10:17 am

Humiliating. That's what Otto considered this situation; Reine's gentle pushes and words and his own blasted fear. Worse off, she was actually helping. He'd have to really make sure he made up for all this "subservient" behavior another time.

The sight of the compound put Otto at ease. He could see lights. As long as he had that, he was fine, really. Not daring to look back into the pitch black behind them, Otto pressed forward and didn't slow his pace until he was safe inside.

Finally.

Otto coughed into his hand and rolled his shoulders, trying to play it like he hadn't just been acting like a total sissy.

"We're back," Reine announced happily, as if it wasn't obvious enough. "Don't worry so much, Otto, outside-the-compound really isn't that scary, even at night, unless you're in the forest, I was on duty once there and there were shadows lurking everywhere, plus we didn't even bring a torch or anything, it was so hard to find our way back out! I swear we almost got ambushed by monsters or something a bunch of times, but we kind of just ran back here. Maybe we should do forest duty at night sometime, me you and Eva, I think it'd be pretty fun."

The time spent out, as brief as it had been, had done her some good at least, and Reine was already feeling a lot better than she had been. She patted him hard on the back, then winked at him, hopefully the kid would loosen up a little soon.

"Night Otto, sleep well when you do!" Where Reine was headed, she didn't quite have a clue- it was too early for bed, and too late for.. well, most other things. Maybe she'd spend some time poking around the labs for a bit.
