Illarion felt taken aback. "You can talk?" He asked somewhat incredously. That wasn't actually very kind or nice, "I'm sorry. I didn't--shouldn't pry." He lowered his eyes again. "I'm glad you like them, and that I could help. Tell me," he hesitated again. "Are you just afraid of me?"
It was rude, he shouldn't ask still. But somehow he felt compelled to, even if it wasn't fair. It wasn't really any of his business, he had no right to know. "I'm sorry, forget I asked."

Eäryendë was taken back by his barrage of questions. She shied away, swimming in circles for a moment before coming to a stop and looking at him. Afraid of him? She was afraid of everyone. He seemed kind enough, but so had he and look where that had landed her.
"It's not.. your.. fault." She spoke a little louder this time, thouht it was a little hard for her to get so many words out. They seemed strange to her; she wondered if she was using the right ones.
Right words or not, she spoke the truth. This stallion had done nothing to her, but she was untrusting of any male. It was safer that way, easier to keep herself protected.

Illarion paused considering after hearing her halting words. Who had done something so damaging to her that she could barely speak to him? Most people, just weren't that shy...And she had implied that though he hadn't done it, someone had.
What was he supposed to say to that though? It was going to be okay. He was a good stallion. She'd probably heard that all before. And really, did it matter anyways? He was just a stranger to her, someone she'd pass by for a short time in life and then fade from her memory forever.
He said the simplest thing he could, "I'm sorry...for whatever happened to you." He hoped she knew that he meant that, really truly meant it. But even if she didn't, he did mean it.

Eäryendë bowed her head as he watched her, shy and aware of how strange she was. Her head snapped up at him when he apologised and she stared at him. No one had ever said they were sorry for her. No one had taken the blame or the time to care. And here, this stallion, had taken it upon himself to do such a thing for a stranger.
"Why?" Was all she could manage to say. She didn't understand. Why was he being so kind to her; someone he didn't know. This was a foreign concept and she was.. afraid. Slowly, he was shattering her beliefs; the wall she'd put around herself.

Why?
It was a good question, difficult to answer in a way. He opened his mouth, trying to chose his words carefully. "You deserved to hear it. I can tell you've...been hurt. No one apologized, did they? You deserve it for whatever happened to you, to make you fear me. I'm good, I promise. But that doesn't mean anything to you because someone was cruel to you. I'm sorry. You deserved to hear it," he repeated again.

Eäryendë dipped down into the water, her eyes up the only thing poking out. She looked at him with a child like curiosity. She had only heard of such kind beings in stories; fairy tales made up to keep little girls happy. Perhaps.. Perhaps not everyone was as cruel as those who hurt her.
The stallion had given her a kindness she had never been given before and suddenly the pearl necklace she had given him seemed so plain and worthless. She duh around into her bag and pulled out a pendant; gold, sparkling with a red stone. She'd found it exploring and had strung it with shells of black.
Swimming forward she held it out to him, blinking. "Thank you."
