It was probably a good thing that Kettil didn't mention that he'd like Lark on the buns. It was entirely probably that the reaper ghoul's tolerance for such remarks would be very, very low. Nonexistent. The innocent kiss that Kettil had placed on Lark's lips just days past had consumed her thoughts, really, and any sort of conversation that could be perceived as remotely flirty would not be received well.
At all.
Then again, Lark knew that Kettil was no mind-reader. She was reminded of this on a daily basis. If he was a mind-reader, he'd know just how much she cared for him. Loved him. Needed him -- as more than a friend.
Checking on the burgers once more, Lark hastily arranged the vegetables she'd prepared on the side of Kettil's bun before adding the condiments she knew he preferred. Her own burger was piled high; useless, as it was likely the ghoul would just peck at her food.
"Y'know I'll eat anything," Lark said with a glance in Kettil's direction. "Golf sounds fun, been a while. I'll suck hard but s'all in fun, yeah?"

Kettil sat at the table glancing down at the surface for the time being. Not looking at Lark made things easier and his mind wandered a lot less though he wasn't sure what brought it on at all. How things had changed he wasn't sure. He nodded is head, "Yeah, course it is all in fun, I mean we get pretty competitive but ... we'll reign it in, right?"
He wasn't sure how the evening was going to turn out but hopefully it'd end up fun. Kettil trailed his fingertips against the surface of the table, "Yeah you'll eat anything like a little bird," he teased lightly with a small smile.
The Lark he knew only picked at her food a lot of the time causing him to fuss at her.

Lark gave a loud snort of laughter. She knew he was right. Eating had never really been her strong suit, though she hadn't had an issue with tucking away her spaghetti when she'd cooked dinner for Roch. Maybe it was because she'd much rather stare at Kettil than eat. Who knew.
That single thought brought back a rush of emotion as she briefly recalled what had happened at the assembly.
Clearing her throat, Lark swiftly finished assembling their burgers and brought the plates out to the table. The assembly was a topic she wanted to bring up, but she didn't really want to spoil the camaraderie they had going on at the moment. Things were almost effortless. Almost.
Finally she decided to speak.
"What happened at th'assembly, Ket?" Her words were quiet and unobtrusive; no malice or anger. Curiosity, really.

Kettil was happily just going along just sitting there talking to Lark. It was like they were back to normal for a brief moment or two. For once his thoughts had cleared up and all he saw was Lark. His Lark. No one was in between them or getting in the way and for now any odd thoughts he had been having had all but stopped.
Then her question came up and he startled a little and he let out a quiet sigh, "Nothin' major, Lar. Roch and I had a talk and it was...between us. I mean..."
It concerned Lark she had a right to know but still...
"I just...I wanted to make sure he was a good friend for you is all," he muttered softly under his breath. As far as Kettil was concerned right now - Roch was a horrible friend and a horrible boil in general.

A goofy grin almost spread across her lips. Almost. She beat it into submission as she poked at her burger.
"He ain't a bad guy, Ket. It ain't like ... Nobody could ever replace ya, if that's what yer worried about." She cleared her throat. Honesty was good. They'd always been honest with one another until pretty recently.
"I know how it feels, yeah? Like.. I felt th'same way w'Freya. Like she was gonna replace me. Like y'were bein' more honest w'her than y'were w'me." Her ears turned pink. Had that come out the wrong way? Probably.
"Roch was a good friend when I didn't have ya. When y'weren't here. I ain't blamin' ya. I know y'would'a been here if y'could'a. He still is a good friend... n'I know y'don't like 'im, and I know things got pretty heated back there, but.."
Lark fell silent and went back to poking at her food.

He picked up his burger and started to eat it as he listened to her response. Kettil's stomach made an uneasy clench as he tried to recall some of the things that had made him upset at Roch in general and simply let out a small quiet grunt as he chewed along and then swallowed. He shifted a little in his seat as he looked over at her.
"In spite of Roch thinks, I'm not gonna tell ya who to be friends with. I am not the type of boil to make you choose between me or th' other guy. Just know that...I don't appreciate some of his mannerisms," he said softly and then rolled his shoulders into a shrug. "He...said some things that did not set right with me at the assembly and when I first talked to him. I never keep anythin' from you Lar an' I wasn't about to play the game he was tryin' to play with me at the start. All pretendin' it was the first time we met."
Silence took over for a moment as he picked up his burger again, "And if he brings up the whole thing with Freya again I'mma punch him cold in the jaw and break his fingers. I'll talk about it with you but him? It don't concern him." He said dryly and then took a bite of his meal once more.
How or why the situation with Freya concerned Lark he didn't know other than the fact that she was his best friend.

Lark picked at the lettuce on her burger, daintily tearing off a small piece before chewing on it thoughtfully. She knew Kettil entirely too well and it was a little obvious to her that the conversation was making him uncomfortable despite how lightly he was playing it. Lark wasn't trying to make him feel upset, and yet it kind of thrilled her the way he stood up for her.
Until he mentioned Freya.
Wrinkling her nose, Lark scowled darkly at the food on her plate before she reached forward and mangled the lettuce further. She forced herself to cool down. It didn't matter. It did not matter. Kettil was a grown boil and more than capable of making his own decisions. Lark wasn't about to go there again.
"Well, m'jest glad you two didn't start a brawl right there in th'gym. We all would'a gotten in heaps of trouble. Guess it's good y'listened t'me." She grinned, though it was a little strained.
"Fer once."

He'd stopped eating and just sat there staring at her. He saw her scowl and how she looked and somehow it hurt him a little though he wasn't sure why - probably because no one seemed to comprehend the idea that ... things have changed - were starting to change at least as far as the situation of Freya was concerned.
"It pissed me right off," he said quietly, "but the thing that pissed me off more is how he talked about you. I mean don't get me wrong if he said horrible things about Freya I'd sock him one...but if he says things about you ...I'd sock him twice as hard. Hard enough to make him forget his name and where he came from."
There was a small flush of color on his face as he picked up his food, "And that's cause..You're mine. I had you first. He ain't got no right to talk about you like some ghoul he's about to peg or somethin'."

Well.
Well.
Lark didn't even bother to hide the way that his words affected her. Widened eyes, a pinkish blush to the tips of her ears and one mirrored on the apples of her cheeks. Even if she knew he hadn't meant his words the way they'd sounded, Lark didn't care. She was just overcome. It was so easy to pretend that his words held the exact meaning that she so desperately wanted them to.
And she was tired of wasting time. Not to the point where she was going to grab him by his ears and kiss him, but...
Jerkily she rose from the table and carried her plate into the kitchen. Setting her untouched burger on the counter she finally spoke. Breathy and entirely not-Lark.
"Y'keep talkin' that way and people're gonna think we're datin'."

He had essentially finished his meal and quietly turned the plate about in his hands as he watched her move around the room. There was something about the way she walked and moved about that always seemed rather nice to him but then he was probably looking at her through the eyes of a...
..A what?
Kettil flushed a bit at her tone and he cleared his throat a little, "Y..Yeah. I suppose so..." He moved to get up bringing his plate with him. He suddenly felt like he was in front of a line one that he wanted to cross and yet was too afraid to.
Every time he was alone with her now there was this strange tension like they both wanted something from the other but neither were sure how to get it. Frustrating as it was he didn't want to stay away.
He said nothing negative about the idea of them dating like he might have before but he hadn't said anything positive either, "Y'mean datin' steady or datin' in general?" instead he asked a silly question.

He was such a dork sometimes. The situation was diffused immediately, though Lark still had one pressing question she wanted to ask. Now seemed the perfect time, and as she gave a breathless laugh she turned to lean against the sink. She reached out and thwapped him on the chest before leaning back and falling silent.
"Steady."
Nice answer.
"Why'd y'kiss me th'other day, Ket?"
Bad question.

Thwapped across the chest he let out a small almost nervous sounding chuckle. He leaned toward and briefly against her to put his emptied plate in the sink. He stayed like that for what seemed to be very long moments just enjoying the warmth of her nearby before he pulled away and then he rubbed the back of his neck, "Well, y'know...What do we care what others think...?"
The question stumped him for a long time as he tilted his head toward the ceiling chewing a bit on his bottom lip as he tried to wrestle out an answer.
Why? Why did he do that? What could he tell her? He couldn't think of an answer that could be satisfactory enough, "It...felt right," he managed with a small shrug, "you...needed something and I was already holding you and...If I held you any tighter I'd have probably hurt ya worse...Was bad enough y'got hurt and I couldn't protect you right..."

What had she expected him to say, honestly?
"I can't live without you."
"I had to know what your lips felt like."
"We are destined to be together for eternity."
"I need you forever."
Yeah, right. But even then, a kiss? Because it felt right? Was she just grasping for straws? She narrowed her eyes at him. It seemed like kind of a lame answer, but did she want to push for more? She was starting to get a massive headache battling with all these questions that were tripping through her brain.
She cleared her throat and turned around, rinsing off his plate. Was it her imagination, or could she actually smell him? Lark was convinced she was going insane.
"Jest hadn't been expectin' it. I mean, I've kissed ya before, on the cheek... but never on th'lips. It was.. it's no big deal, right?"

A part of him wanted to laugh it off and eagerly agree that it had indeed been no big deal but then it would have been a lie amongst other things. He shifted his shoulders as he moved to stand beside her quietly and just watch her as she rinsed off the plate now.
It was a big deal. It was a major deal. It confused him.
"...Dunno. I think it was a pretty big deal because we ain't kissed like that before," he said simply and in a serious tone. Certainly he was confused with all these emotions he'd been feeling and trying to fight out what he felt for Freya and now Lark but still.
He moved to brush a bit of hair from the side of her face not sure what to add. If she had been a ghoul he was casually dating then the kiss would have been for a quick thrill, if it had been Freya it would have been to see how it felt, but Lark...
Things were starting to get complicated.

If Lark didn't know Kettil as well as she did, she would think that he was playing head games with her. The fact of the matter was that Lark did know Kettil, and she knew Kettil very well. The kiss that they'd shared, that simple chaste little kiss, had meant something to him just as it'd meant something to her.
Lark just didn't know what it'd meant and she wasn't entirely sure that Kettil even knew what it meant. The important thing was that he wasn't lying to her. He never did.
When he reached up to brush away an errant strand of her hair, Lark closed her eyes for just a moment before lifting them to meet Kettil's. Every single emotion she felt was there blazing in her eyes if only he knew what to look for.
"N-no," she cleared her throat, instantly moving away from him so that she could breath. "We ain't. Doubt we will again." She was struggling for breath, her chest was tight and all she wanted to do was to take him into her arms and just...
"What d'ya wanna do now?"
