Halfway, hmm? Well, she could work with that, even if she could not convince him to let her lead him all the way. It was not as though it really mattered, anyway. This little boy was not going to get home so easily.
"You need not be so worried about me," she assured him. "I am quite capable of taking care of myself. However, if it worries you so much, I will not force you to let me take you all the way."
Coyote half-turned toward the forest, poised to lead the way. "This way."

Shifting his green gaze from Coyote to the forest ahead, his heart could only race. This was it, he was taking a step in the right direction. Trusting others. His pack would be so proud of him when they found out. Yup, and his mother would be even more please. Depending on how their trip was, perhaps he could take her the whole way. Then he could prove to the rest of the pack that he wasn't making this all up!
Yes! This could work. She had to gain more trust from him first though. "So...Coyote, what is it you do in your pack?" It was a simple, honest question. He wanted to know why she was out here, and what she was good at. Obviously she was somewhat strong, what with her being alone.
That is amazing to him. Yes... Maybe one day he would be the same as her. Able to roam about the lands without being afraid.
"I hope one day, I can be like you. Strong."

He was going for it. Oh, it was all she could do to contain her pleasure. What fun she would have! Silly little male, placing his trust in the wrong wolf. Well, she could hardly blame him. After all, Coyote could be so very convincing.
"Oh, a little of this and a little of that," she said vaguely. "I hunt and tend to other minor duties. Nothing special. They do not miss me when I am away."
Of course, it was often her job to be away. Gathering information and ranging across the land. Spying, if you will, though that was such a nasty word. She preferred to think of it as intelligence. Yes. She was in charge of intelligence.
She grinned at him. "You flatter me. I am not so very strong. And what is it you do in your pack?"

Wheat stared at the she-wolf and waited for a moment. If that wasn't vague he didn't know what was. However he decided to just leave it be, what was the use in picking a possible new friend apart like that? Moving a few steps closer, her just smiled. "Well, I will say I am a bit disappointed you don't do something more.. enthralling. But thank you for sharing none the less."
Now shoulder to shoulder with the dark wolf, Wheat's tail flicked from side to side. He was enjoying his chat with the mysterious wolf Coyote, and not realizing how rapidly his surrounding were changing.
It was when she asked of his pack that Wheat made a soft yelp. No one really asked questions like that from him. He had something to do, but it wasn't all that interesting. Would she be ashamed of him for telling her the truth? ...Probably. But a lie was much worse.
"Umm... I watch. I am very good at making out oddities." Sighing his ears drooped. Yes, he shared with her his boring a** job. Now. Would she laugh at it?

Dear, oh, dear. He thought her "job" was boring, yet he said all he did was watch? A little hypocrite, he was. For shame.
"Oh? What sort of oddities?" Coyote let none of her laughter show through, instead sounding genuine. However, she was seriously doubting his powers of observation right now. The subtle changes in the landscape were quickly transforming their environment into a more barren, dry forest. Red and perhaps a little sinister. Dark. Not at all inviting.
For one who boasted held his powers of observation in such high esteem, he could not see very well. Or perhaps it was a comment on her ability to keep him adequately distracted. She rather liked that idea.

"Well oddities like a strange wolf, or abnormal behavior in the animals that live near our pack... Dying...." And then Wheat stopped. Dying. Like all the trees around him. What in the world?!? He hadn't passed any dying trees when he had gotten to the place he was at before!!!
Snarling suddenly, all of the fur on the meek wolf raised, his eyes flaring with some kind of insanity. She had tricked him. She was planning to do something sinister to him. She deserved death for her actions.
"She-wolf, you... Tell me where I am at once." Snapping his yellowed canines at her, his timid demeanor all but disappeared. What was once so sweet and easy to pick on now was a monster readying to kill.
And everyone wondered why they called him Split Wheat. That was... until they seen him in action.

...oops.
Well, that certainly put a kink in her plans. The little male had fangs. Who knew? Her admittedly rather intelligent mind working furiously, Coyote shrank back from her prey and looked around in confusion.
"I do not understand," she said. "Why is this a problem? I am merely taking you back to your pack the only way I know how. We can try to find a different rout, if you like."
Really. What a pain. Coyote preferred to avoid physical confrontation whenever she could help it. Fights were so annoying, and she did not like pain. Of course, with her skilled tongue, she rarely had to resort to violence. Most did not realize her deception until she was long gone, if they ever figured it out at all.
It seemed that luck was not on her side today. She should have come up with something else to do to him, rather than attempt to lead him to her packlands. Then again, she could run away now and he would still be abandoned, lost, and directionless in the Redwood Forest. That was, after all, her main goal. Still, she would rather not leave him with a bad opinion of her. Who knew when he might be useful. Best try to salvage the situation. If her silver tongue failed her, at least she was fast enough that she could get away.

Green eyes glittered with pure rage as his more sensible side died. He knew she was lying, he knew what she was doing, and he would kill her for it. Recognizing his weak side and exploiting it. That was absolutely disgusting; and really, was there any reasoning for it? Probably not.
Growling and lowering himself, Split started to stalk after Coyote. Slowly, making sure to not cause her to run. He wasn't going to allow her to escape. Not without a couple bloody spots on her anyway.
"A different route you say... You mean a route that won't lead me furthertoward the redwood? Ah.. yes, that surely would be best don't you think?"
Blinking sweetly, but very sarcasticly, Split took at look at just where she was positioned and how to best attack her. The air seemed nice? Yes, she didn't seem like the type to be able to defend herself well.
"I wonder how the wicked she-wolf handles herself....."
Suddenly rushing at her, Split leapt into the air, landing a fairly decent hit on the female before leaping backwards, ready to strike again.

Coyote yelped at the impact and flattened her ears to her skull.
This situation was going from bad to worse. Why, oh, why did this pesky little male have to have a violent side? It was hardly fair. Her dearest sister would probably say that this was karma catching up to her. She snarled at the thought.
Returning to the matter at hand, it would be best to forget about this nasty male. He would be hopelessly lost now, anyway. Better to cut her losses and avoid anymore pain.
"The she-wolf does not care to be wounded for her deeds," she said. "So the nasty male can find his own way home."
With that, she turned tail and ran, hoping to outpace him before he managed to wound her any further.

By the time Split realized she was running away, it was already too late. He had to think fast, use what time he was given to at least get back to a safer area before he calmed down... and started to panic again.
However, he swore he would kill the she-wolf that tricked him, and what a better way that at her own game.
Taking a deep breath inward, the honey brown colored wolf let out a long deep howl, hoping it would leave a message for the lovely Coyote. She was next, just had to be found again.
Snarling, Split quickly peeled off. Rushing back where he assumed he had came, towards the living and his pack.
