K'en was also a bit late in arriving to the mess hall, though not for reasons relating to self-presentation. He and Stromath had been caught up in conversation relating to recent rumors and happenings at the Weyr and as such he had lost track of time. Once at the mess hall, he made his way straight over to join the members of his assigned group, a golden firelizard perched upon his shoulder. "My apologies for being late," he said to Kindra and F'itz both with a partial bow ('partial' mostly so that poor Rajash would not fall forward off of his shoulder). Glancing around he didn't see C'mric around quite yet, but he did catch sight of Tsubari and his wher sitting and eating. "Shall we join Tsubari at the table?" He took notice of the current questioning being directed towards a nervous looking wherhandler, but unlike Kindra did not think intimidation to be the best tactic. If there was in fact information to be had from her, it would not do well to have everyone crowding her at once.

Wherhandler Frey relaxed slightly and glanced between the retreating N'mol and Dinah again before she replied.
"A revolution? You heard that?" The thought seemed to push the wherhandler even more to the side of paranoid. Her eyes shuttled back and forth for a moment as she thought. "It's always possible. Some people are always unhappy enough to talk big, but that's never come to anything before. You think the murder was meant to draw supporters or something?" Frey didn't wait for a reply, continuing her own train of thought as she ran with this new conspiracy rumor. "Who would do that? Couldn't be anyone loyal the weyrs, could it? Then again, you never know with people." She eyed N'mol and the others again, then eyed Dinah almost the same way. "Where'd you hear that, anyway?"

Tsubari looked up as Tsubarisk rumbled. The wherhandler was caught up in thought and didn't hear his name said, but the ever guarded wher did. Glancing up, he nodded to the riders. He looked closer at Frey. There was something off about her movements, or maybe that was just his nerves.
He moved closer to Tsubarisk, more to keep the wher in check than anything else. "So what have you heard?" He would try to be polite, but some feelings are hard to hide. It would be best if he stayed away from Kindra. He would work with her to find clues, but that would be about all he could handle. Catching a little of what Frey was saying, he was surprised.

"Well, there's gotta be somethin' to it. They tried to kill Malvren's and Trine's, too. Somehow I doubt it's somebody who just hates goldriders. Not that I'm a fan," she added, glancing back to the recently-arrived Kindra, "Wanted to deck one once or twice myself, but murder'd be a stretch."
"Oh, doesn't matter. Everybody talks to somebody, then they talk to somebody...you know how it goes. Personally, I just wanna find out so they'll stop harpin' on us like we're the ones did wrong. Y'know?"

Frey just nodded slightly at Dinah's comment about wanting to deck Goldriders, but when she realized Tsubarisk had overheard she jumped slightly before she realized he was just another one of the new handlers. Her sharp, nervous gaze took him in and the almost adult Brown beside him.
"It was me that heard it, it was her. Though you're right, a lot of fingers are being pointed our way, but like I said, who at Benden would kill Kestril? We patrol as best we can with few numbers, but where were the other riders when the killer got in, huh? I'm telling you, someone knows something for sure, if you can find the right person. But then, that's what all of this investigation business is about isn't it?"
She reached out to rest a hand on the wher at her feet, who had begun to stir slightly with all of the activity right nearby.
"I'm sure they'll ask me the same questions at some point," she said, jerking her chin slightly at the riders gathered behind Dinah and then darting her gaze over to the group that had gathered around Tsubari. "But you'll likely tell them all about that, won't you?" She gave him a shrewd look.

...and then Tsubari had to chime in. It was better than one of the riders, maybe, but it was clear Frey didn't trust him, either. "Yeah, it all comes back to the right person. And maybe the right person finding the right person, I think, not some gaggle of little riders who like to pretend they're already important. Leave it to the dragonfolk and they'll botch it for sure."
Frey's words to Tsubari gave her some pause. Dinah wasn't real cracked about having to cooperate with dragonriders, especially this lot, and was beginning to think that maybe she shouldn't. Not anymore than she absolutely had to, anyway. She was going to have to play all this carefully.

Oh so then she hadn't heard that bit before. This, for some reason, made Dezima feel better. She'd have hated to learn that her friend had told her something and she'd missed it completely! She gave Brynja a grin before glancing at the arrival of a girl she didn't know. Who introduced herself as Emkin.
"Hiya, Emkin! Like N'mol said, I'm Dezima. Nice to meet ya." She really did mean it. Even if they were all meeting here so they could investigate things.
I don't like this. A soft sweet voice informed her. Microth had been fairly quiet while Dezima and Brynja had chatted on their way to meet with their group. There seems to be tension amongst yourselves already. How will that assist in finding useful information if you cannot even trust your fellows? The green had been brewing over what she'd picked up from her bonded, borrowing her eyes to see for herself. And she'd come to that conclusion.
<I know. But some of us haven't really done the best of jobs at giving people like Dinah reason to like us.> Dezima glanced towards the handlers, who were talking amongst themselves, and briefly towards Kindra - who had just arrived. She really wanted to hear what they were saying, but after N'mol had returned back to the rest of them, Dezima didn't dare try approaching lest the one handler refuse to speak at all.
Be cautious, dear heart, with what we have heard. Some of those humans are not going to be happy to hear it.
She'd all but forgotten that, until Microth dug it up out of her mind. <I will soon, dear. But maybe not just yet.>

(eddited to include K'en because i derped)
Kindra turned to F'itz with a somewhat tense smile on her lips. "Suunath is currently sleeping off her meal, i doubt she would be willing to communicate anything" she said, her voice low as she watched the Wherhandler carefully but trying not to be too obvious about it. She nodded to K'en "Don't worry K'en dragons take a lot of work" she said sweetly to the young Bronzerider, she needed to interact with them more if she was honest, since one of them was possibly going to catch Suunath.
However she saw the handler getting more and more jumpy the more she was questioned by her fellow Wherhandlers and grabbed F'itz's arm. "It seems we may have to intervene ... but should you have any questions please feel free to ask them. I may have gotten Suunath to get you all here but" she grimmaced a little and sighed "I don't always have the best temper with Handlers" she admitted. before striding up to the Wherhandlers, letting F'itz take the lead with the twitchy handler while she turned to Dinah with a hard swallow. "Wherhandler, i think i owe you an apology ... i was... out of order that night but as i'm sure you know, with a new hatchling you rarely get enough sleep and with this Assassin still at large.... " she let her words trail, not wanting to commit to a truly sincere apology but she knew that she would have to at least get along somewhat with the handlers as she, as Weyrwoman, would have to deal with them. She was really starting to realise (with Suunath's urgings) that she needed to have a certain respect for those around her with skills other than her own.

Emkin flushed as the bronzerider introduced himself. He clearly seemed to be the one in charge. She nodded at the other riders as N’mol introduced the other two. “Hi,” she replied softly. When she looked at the person her group was questioning, it seemed the handler was as nervous as she was. The younger handler had a lot of guts telling N’mol to leave. It was a gold that’d been killed, so he had every right to be here didn’t he?
Well now what was she to do? Confused, Emkin looked back and forth between the riders and handlers. Eventually she shuffled over to the handlers. She had a question she wanted to ask, and they would know if anyone did. Emkin nodded to the senior wherhandler. “I think if anyone would know it would be you. How many secret tunnels does Benden have? Perhaps the assassin left a clue in one if he escaped that way.” Her eyes darted toward Kindra and her group.

Well. Even if Kindra wasn't in their group, she was now in the room, which made Brynja a little unhappy... and even if she was apologising, there were still excuses for her behaviour tacked on to the end of her apology. Some day she might have to follow Kindra's leadership, and she should, that was how things worked, but it was hard to work out how she should do that when Kindra was so... so... difficult to respect, and... and she was being unfair, and she was going to keep her big mouth shut.
...secret tunnels.
Secret tunnels.
Okay, secret tunnels would be exciting.
"Waitwaitwait. Benden has secret tunnels? Why didn't I know about this?" Brynja demanded, bouncing slightly on her toes. "Where are they?"

Frey went very still as Kindra came up, and then her eyes shuttled to Emkin. After a moment of watching, she relaxed, but it was only a fraction. If nothing else, it seemed this was a woman who was always nervous. Emkin's question and reason seemed to really draw her attention though, as one of her hands began to tap quickly on the table. She glanced at Brynja, but directed her answer and attention mostly to Emkin.
"The secret tunnels? Oh, plenty of them around, I suppose. No one can possibly know them all. What makes you think I'd know them all? That's a good thought on the escape route, though, I think. It's believable that he could have escaped that way, though there are so many you'd be hard put to find one he used if he did use it. And there's no saying he didn't have someone helping him out of the Weyr, either." She studied Emkin appreciatively. "Have you considered going in for a handler? We always need people who are sharp enough to handle whers."

N'mol seemed to notice the change in questioners when Kindra finally moved closer. One quick glance showed him she was speaking to Dinah, and as Emkin moved over to them as well, N'mol followed, trying to take in everything at once. The question about the tunnels was a good one. N'mol had known there were secret tunnels somewhere, but he'd never used any himself and was fairly sure only those who accidentally stumbled upon them and the ranking riders knew where they were. Someday, maybe that would include him too, but it didn't right now.
"Could you point us in the right direction of any of the tunnels, Senior Wherhandler? Or maybe hazard a guess as to why someone would help him out of Benden if he didn't take the tunnels? You had mentioned," he added by way of explanation, "That you doubted anyone at Benden would kill Kestril. Who would want to help him, then?"

Dinah's expression twitched unpleasantly when Kindra came over and addressed her, but lightened somewhat when the reason turned out to be to apologize...even if she did make excuses in the same breath. Still, it was better than no apology at all, although the handler wasn't going to make it quite that easy on the Weyrling goldrider. She shrugged rather noncomitally, acutely aware of the presence of the other wherhandlers and not about to look 'soft.' "Whatever. Just don't do it again."
"You lot wanna go runnin' around the tunnels, you'll need the whers. Wouldn't want anybody gettin' lost, after all." The young woman's grin suggested a thought that that might not be such a bad thing in all cases.

Secret tunnels. F'itz thought back to where he'd found that... that item. He wouldn't say it was a secret tunnel he'd found it in but it had been a lesser used one he supposed, he'd been using it for so many turns it didn't occour to him to think that others might consider it out of the way. He'd consult with Kindra and the others in his group on his find later later, though given the nature of it one member of the team made him faintly uneasy. One just had to have a bit of faith he supposed, he seemed like a decent sort of fellow.
F'itz asked his dragon rhetorically, repressing a sigh.
Brumath rumbled,
Brumath was right to be cautious, but he himself still felt it worth risking in order to share thoughts with his fellows. In any case, the individual in question might actually have more to offer than anyone else; he couldn't afford to leave him out. "A good question N'mol," F'itz nodded, "who would help him... and why?"

Frey nodded at Dinah's words. "The whers are necessary if you're going to stumble around some of the darker tunnels. Our companions can find a spot in a hallway in the dark." She stroked her beloved Green with one hand. "The tunnels have been used for plenty of less-than-acceptable uses before, I bet. They're sure to find something."
She looked to N'mol, her gaze shrewd. "I still don't know why you all think I know the secret tunnel system. What are you trying to imply? I think even the Brownrider here could direct you to a 'secret' tunnel or two, couldn't you?" She accused, squinting at him slightly. Her leg jiggled with nervous energy. "Just because I know a few doesn't mean I use them. I know there are some that run off the hallways where Kestril was killed, but we investigated those ourselves shortly after the murder. Not that we could distinguish much after the riders had gone trampling all over everything, ruining whatever scent our whers may have gotten. You think we really slipped in our guarding? Or don't you think that murderer had planned on exactly that loss of control following the murder to hide his trail? They're crafty, these murderers."
She glanced at the people now surrounding her and shifted in her seat as F'itz echoed the rest of N'mol's questions. She seemed to consider it. "Why would they help him kill Kestril? I don't know… That W'lin's seemed pretty smitten with being in charge... You think it's connected?" She was already nodding at the new theory she had presented to herself.
"It could be, that would be a perfect reason, wouldn't it? How better to snatch power than get the Weyrwoman out of the way? I'll say this again, though: If it's some sort of power grab, conspiracy thing, whomever's behind it sure knows what they're doing!" She gave her wher a few firm pats to emphasize her words.
