"Holdless?" When Bolth returned to his rider, it freed up some of Adi's focus to pay attention to the conversation. "I've never even seen any Holdless. But why the Weyrs? If they're mad at somebody, shouldn't they be mad at the Holds? I did hear it was somebody with a grudge, not a rider at all, but why would a Holdless be mad at the Weyrs? Maybe one Weyr, if they were from one, but..."
The bluerider was well out of her element. The motives and logic of bad people escaped her.

Noting Z'en's glance at her, Kleos raised her eyebrows in question briefly before returning her attention to the cook.
Sending a feeling of acknowledgement, the crimson reached out to Kataith.
With this communicated, Kleos turned her attention back to the cook. "If it was a Holdless killer, how do you suppose they went about it?" she asked. "There were attacks in Benden, Trine, and of course here. No Holdless could travel so far so fast... they would have to be organised." That would fit in with what she'd heard whispered. An organized gang of killers, contracted for one job and then turning on their employer. The question remained, however, who had paid them in the first place? It couldn't be anyone from Malvren... could it?
Moriath's reply was unequivocal, her belief in her people absolute... but then doubt struck. She couldn't believe it, wouldn't believe it!

Dragonflight Pern Captain

Annabelle shook her head slightly as her comment set off a slight barrage of questions and wondering. "There are always holdless skulking about" she told the small group "That's the problem, no one really knows how many of them are out there nor what they're up to, they're rogues - homeless and often with a grudge again anyone who belongs somewhere. they'd hate us Weyrfolk just as much as they'd hate those in the holds and why not kill our leaders? The entire world looks up to the dragonriders, kill our leaders and it makes us seem human just like the rest of them. Disgusting."
The cook ended her rant with another shake of her head and moved a pile of dished off a tray to join the pile waiting to be taken back for washing letting the group muse over what she had said earlier. it wasn't until Kleo's asked another question that she paused to consider her answer with a slight shrug. "I don't know to be honest deary..I suppose he would have had to have help...but who on Pern would help a rogue?" She questioned. certainly no one good thats for sure. The holdless were filthy wretched creatures - Annabelle just couldn't see any sane person actually wanting to help one of them.

Bolth received a healthy amount of Orlina's attention while he stayed near her and C'rci, though she took care to listen to what Annabelle had to say.
Orlina had heard Annabelle talk about the Holdless before, so the cook's firm take on the murderer and who was behind it wasn't entirely new to her. She took those sort of comments about the Holdless with a grain of salt, though she didn't know much about Holdless or Holders alike, having grown up in the Weyr as she had. It was possible that the Holdless, who always had some nasty story floating around about them, were involved, but it might also just be Annabelle dumping her problems on them. Orlina couldn't tell for sure.
She gave Bolth a last scratch and then jumped slightly when a flock of firelizards appeared. Judging from the chagrin on the new arrival's face, Orlina guessed that they were all his. She would have to ask him later.
"I think that 'who' is exactly what we need, Anna," Orlina replied, smiling. "I'm sure we'll find something out if we keep asking people like you about it, though. Have any of the drudges heard anything, do you know? Maybe about seeing anything on the night of the murder? Did you hear of anyone seeing the murderer before he entered the Weyrleader's quarters? I would think someone strange would stand out."

C'rci paused listening quietly one hand resting protectively on Bolth's neck where the little Dragon had twined himself with her. Striking the steely blue hide her lips knitted into a frown. A dangerous frown, the kind of frown Bolth recognized as meaning his rider was bout to go in for a kill on something.
Mine? What are you thinking? He inquired giving Orlina's hand an affectionate nuzzle before turning to rub against his rider peeking his head up to look at her.
Something about this whole thing is off. C'rci replied puzzling through the pieces with the same quiet stubbornness Bolth had come to know her for.
How so Mine? And Bolth paused grasping a picture of wher's and dragons from his riders mind. You think it has something to do with the Weyr? Tread carefully Mine. I will not lose you. Bolth replied his eyes whirling yellow as his rider spoke up.
"It couldn't have been a Holdless. They wouldn't have been able to get away fast enough and the whers would have been able to pick them out by scent with ease unless they'd been in the Weyr a long time. No, to move and escape that fast. . ." And C'rci paused, but bluntly continued on.
"I think it'd have to have been a rider or someone with a rider aiding them. It makes sense. A wher wouldn't sound the alarm over another dragon." C'rci finished her voice strong and firm, her features only softening at the low whine from Bolth as he clung to her side. He was a dragon of peace and wasn't fond of using his social skills to aid in what he saw as a fight. On the other hand he was far from willing to leave his rider to pursue such things on his own. The idea of her being hurt or lost terrified him.

"A wher should have sounded the alarm over a strange dragon just as much as a strange human," Kleos contradicted C'rci with a shake of her head. "With this said however," a thoughtful frown creased her face, "Your point about the speed of their escape, although known to us all, raises an interesting question. The assassin leapt out over the sea, and was caught by a dark hided dragon. A dragon. Why would a dragon aid a Holdless wretch? Was the rider the killer, or an accomplice?" No rider would aid such beasts as the Holdless were, surely... unless they had family ties? Her own blood kin meant nothing to her, but she knew that the bonds between many families were strong enough to do... almost anything.

"Well there you go adding to my own theory. Either the whers knew the dragon, didn't have time to sound the warning, or it was a dragon from our own Weyr. It is possible though that perhaps one of the wherhandlers on guard had been bribed not to sound the alarm or drugged." She added pondering as she stroked her blue's head. This was such an intriguing mix of questions and theories though despite liking the cook she rather doubted it was the Holdless who had done this.
The Holdless don't have a motive do they Mine? Bolth answered picking up on his riders thoughts as she nodded.
No. There was no motive for the Holdless to attack a Weyr that she could see. After all without the dragon patrols the Holdless would die for sure come threadfall.

Orlina nearly winced at C'rci's poor handling of what she thought of Annabelle's info. It was hard, sometimes, being friends with someone who had so much trouble understanding how to interact with people. Annabelle was generous... but not so generous that Orlina thought she would take well to basically being shot down after C'rci and the others had directly asked for her help.
Plus, Anna was in charge of food. Orlina didn't want a poisoned plate (not that Anna would do something like that).
"There's still a lot to learn. Maybe the Holdless worked together with someone else to get into the weyrs. You never know," Orlina said in as calm a voice as she could manage, attempting to smooth things over before anyone took offense. "Holdless don't like riders very much and never have. They don't like most anyone, for that matter, if what everyone says is true. We just have to keep looking."
