Fighting with every muscle and bit of restraint that he could muster, it took every fiber of Skah's physical body to last even as long as he did. But the pain could not be ignored forever. In a strange way, it actually felt good, to really, actually feel something. But even so, it became simply unbearable. If he didn't end this quickly he would lose his tail. And that simply wouldn't do.
Quickly gathering his options, Skah loosened his grip so that his claws sat mostly on top of the stallion instead of practically inside of him. And then it struck him. The face. Perhaps if he could just get one quick n** in the right place he could save his tail from the surprisingly wicked bite of the kelpie.
With swift, decisive actions the bird-like soquili turned most of his body and re-positioned his grasp to further up the back and towards the neck not bothering to dig his talons in as his teeth snapped at the stallion's cheek. He was not aiming for real damage at this point, merely enough to turn himself around as much as he could and n** at the face, hoping for that split second of release that would return his tail to him. Sure, he would almost definitely lose some feathers in the process, and it meant that if that release did indeed come, he would have only a moment to bound away and out of harm's reach but he was willing to take that chance. He needed his tail, and he wasn't going to lose it to some kelpie.

Illarion yanked harder on his enemies tail as he tried to keep going. If he let go, he wasn't sure what would happen then. Maybe the other would leave, or maybe he'd just regroup. It would be a tough call. But soon, he had no choice.
Skah lunged toward his face, and instinctively jerked back--letting go. There he'd lost his tentative grasp on a plan--or an upper hand. He blinked back the dark spots swimming before his eyes, and kept his bloodied mouth bared while a low growl emanating from his throat.
He watched the other stallion, unsure what was going to happen or how long he could last out her without some help and some water.

Snapping, nipping, biting all the same, waiting for that one very opportune split second --and there it was. In one swift motion he yanked his tail away sending it flying back behind his rump where it belonged as he pushed off of the stallion once more, this time to get propulsion away from him. After the soft flesh his bloodied claws had sat in, the rocky wall emanated a dull thud as each paw hit it before he rebounded down onto the ground a good three-lengths away from the kelpie. Turning on the spot to keep his eye on the kelpie his head was low and his teeth were bared, but he was practically panting, breathing heavily, sides heaving. But as he did a quick scan over the kelpie, he didn't seem to be faring any better. This was nobody's winning day, in Skah's mind.
He couldn't risk the chance of losing his tail, so it wasn't worth it for him to head back into this gruesome fight, but that wouldn't necessarily mean that he was done for the day.
The poisonous words left his mouth with a growl before he began scaling the wall to find a perch out of the kelpie's reach. "Who knew kelpies would taste like the fish they've strayed from?"
He made a face just as he leapt up to a low outcrop, "Yuck. Fishy fishy fishy." Another bound and he was almost out of reach.
Now it was Illarion's move, and Skah would have to react from there on out. He wasn't likely to throw himself back into the fight, but following behind the kelpie would probably be in his best interest, in case he did end up bleeding out. The canyon wasn't at it's end, but Skah wouldn't be surprised if this kelpie could hobble his way out, as stubborn as he seemed to be. And if he didn't, who would turn down a well-earned snack? Even if it did taste like fish.

Illarion stumbled slightly the world swimming before his eyes for a few brief moments before he could gain perspective. He pulled his lips back and bore his teeth at the evil menace that was not that far away from him. He felt the anger, the buzz of a something savage ticking in his chest and wanting him to fight. But he new better.
He withstood the angry retorts as the creature flitted from rock to rock like some little hopping hen as he called him "fishy." Well now, two could play at that game.
He spit out the blood from his mouth and then licked his lips slowly, "Taste's like chicken. Who'd have known that'st he type of bird you are?" He smiled wickedly for once, letting his ancestors primal features shine through. Kelpies were tough, they could be vicious. If that's what this old bird wanted, he could give it to him. After all, he wasn't winning but he wasn't exactly losing either.

Holding his tail up to avoid any undue contact with the rocks, Skah maneuvered his way a little further up the wall until he was certain he was out of reach. His tail would be tender for quite some time from this battle, but at least it was still attached.
He had allowed his gaze to stray from the kelpie until the retort hit him like a boulder. His chest swelled up as the anger boiled inside of him and he tensed up, about to leap back down onto the offender when he caught himself. That slight pause was enough time for his brain to kick-in and keep him from launching into what would almost assuredly end up killing both him and the kelpie. Letting out the air he had puffed himself up with Skah calms himself enough to allow a wicked smirk appear. Oh, the comments bit down hard, but this was not the time to resort back to the violence that nearly lost him his tail.
Sitting his rump down on the ledge where he stood, Skah made himself comfortable and allowed his smirk to widen into a grin, but he did not respond aloud. They had exchanged insults and he could go on, but he'd rather leave it there. Let the kelpie think he had last say.
Flexing his claws on the rock created an unpleasant scraping noise and illustrated that he wasn't about to go anywhere. His fellow scavengers on the other hand, also began to loom more raucously with some of the braver ones ducking in closer and closer. They could smell the thick scent of blood and had not yet gotten their fill. Where was their meal? Why was that almost-carcass not yet lying on the ground ready for the picking? Though they began to grow impatient, Skah could wait. He could trail along behind for days or weeks if he had to, and perhaps he would get a chance to retort to that chicken comment.

Illarion moved back gently back. The ground was slaked with his blood and that of Skah. The carrion fowl were circling overhead and he realized just how dismal his chances were. He was a creature of water. He needed it and wanted it. He loved it. But what was the matter with him that he had come out here?
There's no water around and now with his wounds he'd be slower. They'd catch up with him. He'd die slowly and painfully...that's what would happen. And that...that creature would eat him or plan on it or something. He wouldn't go down like that.
Setting his shoulders, he turned gently and started to moved backwards a ways before he set off across the hot desert.
