Mortimer didn't know Cymbeline personally, but he could gather from the re-quoting that she was probably the horsemen who looked most like an undead; the funny-horned one with the exposed ribcage. He didn't know what to think about the presents comment, but he did know one thing:

He was about to do something very, very stupid. Maybe he was just too angry with her calm words. Or maybe he was tired of always having to be in a position where he couldn't do anything. Well if the Hunters thought it was a good idea to leave him unshackled, let's see the results!

Either of the Hunters could probably guess what was going to happen a second before he did so, as the zombie's right hand twitched.

"M'not crazy," Mort said, with an odd half-smile, inwardly tensed at his idiocy. "J-Just stupid, s-spiky hair hero."

And then the fist came at Madison, sparks of purple electricity coming from his hand.

And right on schedule. Madison saw the fist coming and dodged, rising from her chair and stepping back, though the freak clipped her shoulder. Still, she could feel Kouki's reassuring power all around her, only slightly diminished by the freak's attack. Slowly, deliberately, she drew one of Kouki's blades and pointed it at the freak.

"I did warn you," she said, simply, then stepped back to glance out into the hallway. "He attacked me. Do it," she said, loudly, to the empty air. Not that the freak could see that she was talking to nobody, of course.

A moment later, she nodded and smiled with apparent satisfaction. "I'm afraid your lovely lady is a bit less pretty now. You can get on okay missing a finger, though. Want to try for an arm?" Her smile was cold as she turned back into the room. She unsheathed a second sword and crossed them in front of her. "Of course, you could always sit back down and we can keep having our nice little chat~ It's up to you."

It had looked cooler in his head, like it always does: smash the enemy in the face, step over them after they fall, put a heel to their throat, make your own demands. And then somehow make an explosion so you can walk away from it without looking back, because cool guys don't look at explosions. Of course in his little rush he had forgotten that they allegedly had this ghoul in custody and . . .

The fist grew tighter, and his second attempt to hit her met with a dull thud against her crossed swords. "Sh-She'll go back t'school," Mort tried to argue. "When die, a-always go back to school." It was what Belladonna had told him, it was what he experienced (eventually) at the Haunted House, and what had happened when he had died a second time in that forest. "Y-Y-You deal w-with me, not her."

Apparently anger made his sentences more coherent. Or maybe the swords did it. Lucky for him, the Hunter didn't have guns . . .

"I didn't say we were going to kill her~" Madison laughed. "Do you know how many things you can do to someone before they die? My comrades will take care of Calliope, oh yes. She won't be going back any time soon... and whose fault will that be, hm?"

She easily fended off his second attack, blades standing firm against the blow. The Hunter snapped the blades away from each other with a shing! of metal on metal, driving the force of the blow at one of the zombie's shoulders, aiming to sever the stitching she saw there and break the limb off entirely. "I don't just talk, kiddo. We can still go back to our little chat."

Throughout the interrogation
The Hunter taunts the zombie
Pulling out the swords for the lulz
Pop! went Mort's whole arm ~

Whatever the combination of gibes, threats, slicing, or ease of defense against his attack was, it was clearly enough to quell the zombie from further offensive action. His newly severed arm fell atop the table with a fleshy-sounding thump, the barest minimum of blood trickling out from the open end.

Well, Mort, you did ask them to cut you instead.

The pain was registered, but Mort was angrier than he had ever recollected being; and it wasn't as if this was the first time he had lost his arm. "Wh-What d'you want from m-me?" he asked, glaring at the female hunter. "You w-want poke brains? Here!" With his good arm, he dug his hand under blue bangs and pulled his cranial top up, revealing the brain underneath; several small bolts of purple electricity arced across the hemispheres.

Also, it was starting to smell a bit more like rotting flesh. Rotting flesh that had been singed.

Hah. Madison couldn't help but feel a surge of pride when the arm hit the table. Even the zombie showing off its brain couldn't get her down; yeah, it was kinda gross, but she'd seen so much worse. "Yes, yes, very nice," she said, as if bored. The Hunter sat down again, though she laid the two swords flat on her lap, right at hand should the freak try anything else. "No wonder you all just hide in the shadows in your little red costumes..."

She raised one eyebrow at him. No... no. There really wasn't much here for her to extract. But maybe she could plant a seed. "Halloween cannot die. The sun is rising. Mean anything to you?"

"Mrrrrr." The cranial top snapped shut again. "Maybe." Mort was getting really, really tired of this one-sidedness. Fighting was useless, talking was useless, but what else was left?

To be annoying, apparently. Mort was pretty sure he was going to die here from one thing or another, which while not comforting at least made him consider going all out. Well, as much as one could go with only one workable limb.

"Wh-When sun rise, bird comes out t-to eat," the zombie added, flipping the middle finger at the Hunter rather cheekily for one who could get chopped up in seconds.

Madison's response was immediate - one blade licked out across the table right at that errant hand. "Oh, very clever~ Try again, kiddo, or we're gonna put that not dying thing to the test."

Couldn't she, like, get some proper pointy torture devices and s**t in here? Geez, this freak was useless.

"Hehehe-" Schwik! And now he had a nice new gash across the top of his hand, dangerously close to having his finger fall off. "Ow." Mort still had an odd half-grin as he retreated his hand, licking the congealed blood off the wound.

It was a little nice, being a nuisance. He never would have thought he would be treating a ghoul like this!

Being blithely stupid was also fun, for some reason. Oh, he was so going to die.

"Is Mortimer to you, pinky. What 'bout s-sun rising?" he posed between licks. "Human still need n-nightlight? Still scared? Y-you should know Halloween not dies. Sun not save you."

And... nope. That was it; she'd lost him. At least the way things stood right now. The little s**t had no new information rattling around in his rotting brain. It had been a waste of resources to bring him here in the first place. She already owed Caelius a debt in gold, and she'd brought in a pile of crap. Damn, damn, damn.

Kouki was hissing in annoyance; he had built up enough of a charge from hitting the freak that he wanted to get more. Kouki. Stop that - what can I use? What will make him ditch the attitude and get scared?

Ssssssssss, the weapon snarled back, then paused. Fire. Undeadssss hate fire.

"Sir." She spoke to Caelius without taking her eyes off the freak. "Do you have a match? Really, I don't think this little freak has much in that little mushpile he calls a brain... but I wonder what'd come out if we played with fire?"

What an idiot she'd been.

And immediately the grin left his face. Stiffening, Mort snatched his dismembered arm off the table and held it defensively, like a makeshift weapon.

Like his own arm would be of great use against even candlelight.

No no no no no no not the fire again! Green eyes were wide as they flitted between the two Hunters.

The Death Hunter simply shifted his gaze from Madison back to the undead and then back to the trainee. "That will be enough, or have you failed to realize that this specimen has already given you your answers?." There was a loud scrape of the chair as he stood up. "I will expect your report brought to Classroom A at seven pm sharp tonight. You are dismissed trainee: close the door on your way out."

Had she passed or failed? There was no indication as Caelius waited for her to exit in silence. It wasn't until the door click closed behind them that he moved, occupying Madison's vacant spot, folding his hands on the table. He stared directly at Mortimer, expression unreadable. "I am under the impression that you know exactly who I am."

It was impossible to miss that this comment was less a question but a statement, though the conditions were outright bizarre. Here was the person who had killed them - killed Red - time and time again sitting there with Mortimer as if they were discussing less urgent matters.

Sosiqui

- Madison has exited the thread to write her report, feel free to write a reaction post before she leaves (icly happening prior to Caelius's questioning)

Ol-j-man

- Mort is still free to attack/move around as he wishes, or simply respond as needed.

Madison gave Caelius a vaguely startled look. The freak had spilled something important and... she hadn't noticed it? What had Caelius been after? It couldn't have been anything earth-shattering or groundbreaking or-

Calm down, she ordered, mentally, and wasn't sure if she was addressing herself or the still-hissing Kouki. "Sir," she said, standing up; she sheathed Kouki's blades deliberately, staring at the freak as she did so. Aw, he was cowering. How cute.

Mental note: bring matches just in case, next time.

The trainee turned and, as directed, closed the door on her way out.

Madison stared. Mortimer stared right back.

Arm still before him defensively, he remained quiet while his interrogator left, even for a few seconds after Caelius had spoken. This . . . was not expected. Fire had been. But the fear was still there, as the zombie still recalled acutely that the Head Hunter had summoned blue fire in the forest. Maybe he wanted to do that and enjoy it all for himself or something.

Wait. Mort was alone with a head hunter. Gulp.

And somehow he had given them some sort of answer she wanted. Double gulp.

"Y-You were fighting Red a-a-at the haunted mansion," Mort eventually said, still quite tense despite the Hunter's casual tone. "N' you were in the forest. B-Blue fire."

Had the horsemen given these leaders names? Mortimer couldn't recall, it had been so crowded in the washroom . . .

"You took heirs th-through door. Why?" It was worth a shot, at least.

"The Heirs were brought here the same reason you are sitting here." Caelius talked as if he were explaining the situation to a three-year old. "And they were returned, just as you will be: death is not practical by any means. We have waited a long time, so it does not hurt us to wait a little longer, I am sure we will meet again."

He stood up, gaze unwavering. "You should ask your professors for the answers to these questions, it is nothing that they do not know. Now, I believe you have a school to return to."

Once again, there was no warning as the Death Hunter's weapon flickered-

- and the shockwave tore into and through Mort remorselessly.

Ol-j-man
