xxxxxKintori's eyes darted to his mouth as he sighed. Was he tired? She herself could feel her muscles growing weary, finally resting after tromping around the forest all day. Tori stifled a yawn as she received his sly compliment, barely catching his wink. Oh. She'd underestimated him completely, hadn't she? Either he was secretly a very popular stallion among the mares, or she brought out the best in him. Giggling, she replied, "Oh! You don't look so bad, Soren! Honest!" She grinned, quite enjoying his company despite the heavy stirrings going on in her mind. Although her response was partially joking, she could tell almost immediately after it slipped that he was unearthing the kind side of her. This typically only happened around her family and, well, Helberd. No. Nononono. She vanquished the thought once more until seconds later Soren brought it up, unintentionally.

xxxxx"I..." She trailed off, unsure what to say as she glanced away from him, ashamed at being so easy to read. "I have a lot on my mind I just don't know what to do... Kintori shook her head, squeezing her eyes shut tight as he continued speaking. She'd been confused before; whether or not to return to Helberd after such along absence was one thing. But now Soren was confusing her even further with his genuinely sweet demeanor and interest in her. Then, her eyes opened suddenly. "You don't have a mate or children? How's that?" She chose to ignore his last comment, even though she knew he was sweetly referencing their chance encounter. Although it was charming, she found it more interesting that her was mateless and childless. Though he had been flirting with her all evening, she'd assumed he'd had a mare back home somewhere. How could he not?

xxxxxHad he posessed any less sense than he did, Soren would have asked her what she was confused about. What she didn't know what to do about. Yet he assumed that it would be better to let it go. When he had a lot on his mind, he usually distracted himself with other things. He would wander to new lands, distract himself with other Soquili... Anything to keep him from thinking of what bothered him most at the moment. He watched her eyes blink open suddenly, surprising him with their intensity. He hasn't guessed what she asked him at all. He was, admittedly, caught off guard. It was a good question. Why didn't he have a mate? He had obviously thought about it. A lot. He had always dreamed of finding one. A perfect mare for him. He realized that it was stupid, yes, but he hadn't really found anyone who was right. Physically, Kintori was an example of a mare that would be perfect for him. She was beautiful and breathtaking and he would never grow tired of being with her.

xxxxxThe hard part was the emotional aspect of everything. She had to be right. But that wasn't really it. He wasn't picky or judgmental. He just felt like he wasn't good enough to support anyone. "It's not that I don't want a mate or children. I would love to have them one day. I want to be able to give my mate everything she could ever want, and I just haven't found anyone that I could do that for." He shrugged his large, masculine shoulders, adverting his eyes from hers. "What about you? Do you have a mate? Kids?" Her beauty was not likely to have gone unnoticed by others, so it led him to place his bet on her having a family already. He yawned once more, exhaustion clouding his mind. He was oddly relaxed around this gorgeous mare. Something about her was easy for him to like. It was odd for him to ever feel truly relaxed. Especially around those who he didn't know well. But he could have known Kintori for all his life - he was just safe with her. He hoped - prayed - that they would remain friends.

xxxxxSoren was thinking. The wheels in his head were turning, that much was obvious. But what was he thinking? Did he have some sort of big secret that he was contemplating as well? Although her's wasn't really as much a secret than a heavy thought, burdening her mind. 'Oh, God. Is that how I think of them? A burden? Them. I don't even know their names!' She squeezed her eyes shut tight again, realizing how uncharacteristic it was to worry about anyone other than herself. What was she thinking? This wasn't the Kintori she'd come to be. This was strange and unusual. What the hell was this stallion doing to her?

xxxxxKintori smiled at his comments. "That sounds very practical and.. sweet. You'll find the right mare some day, Soren." Her smile softened as he looked away and faded altogether at his questions. Silver eyes snapped shut and her breath deepening, Kintori knew she couldn't look at him. She was never very good with feelings or anything heavy; anything that really mattered to her. Vocalizing things especially was a weakness of hers. "I..." 'Deep breaths.' She had no idea how to word this so that it wouldn't sound weighted one way or the other; towards staying with Helberd or leaving him, as well as making sure she refrained from crying. "I... have a mate and kids, yes. Helberd. And... three... kids to him." She continued on her deep breathing for a few moments more before opening her eyes and resolving again to study the rain. It wasn't going to stop anytime soon, she decided, feeling her eyelids droop a tad.

xxxxxSoren felt her own sadness hit him like a crashing wave. Her emotions were obvious, yet he could tell she tried to hide them. Her own words, the fact that she had a mate, definitely made him a tad bit downcast. He was not the kind of stallion to pursue a taken mare, and so he allowed all his thoughts to stray back to being alone. The way she sounded told him that the subject was not a good one. He dropped it before letting her grow more sad, and reached out his muzzle. He put it under her chin and pressed her head up - a traditional sign of comfort. "Everything will be alright, Kintori." He smiled at her softly, his own eyes drooping.

xxxxxNot knowing what else to do, he decided to go with the option that was probably on both of their minds. "Would you like to get some sleep? Nobody should come around here in this storm. It will be gone by morning and then you can be on your way." He backed off a bit and lowered his head, showing that he was just as tired as she was and was not about to crowd her space. A smile played on his lips slightly as weariness fell over him. He had a good feeling about their friendship. He could only wait and hope that she felt the same, because when morning came, he would be on his own again.

xxxxxKintori could feel his disappointment, and cursed herself inwardly for being so drawn to him, as well. It wasn't like her to actually stray from someone she supposedly loved so much like this. Sure, she flirted, but never would she give her heart to someone other than her mate. But then again, has Helberd ever really held her heart? When Soren reached out his muzzle, Kintori's heart constricted and she felt tears welling in her eyes. He was sort of a stranger, wasn't he? Then why was he being so kind and caring? Shutting her eyes lightly, just enough to block away the tears, she smiled softly, hoping that was enough thanks for all he was doing for her. He was a genuinely sweet guy; that made the decision regarding Helberd even tougher. She'd never really met someone like him - someone who flirted not just for fun or other, more promiscuous reasons, but due to genuine interest. It was sweet and flattering and confusing.

xxxxxWhen he lowered his head, Kintori nodded, grateful that he didn't press the subject of her family further. She wasn't so sure she could handle it right this second. "That sounds like a... really good idea, Soren. Thank you... so much." The statement held more weight than she meant it to; this much she realized, when it escaped her mouth. But what exactly did it mean? She was sure she'd never find out. Soren moved away and Kintori smiled a bit. Shuffling her own moves, she settled in next to him, pressing her head into his neck."Night, Soren. Her voice muffled a bit by his fur, she grinned softly. Couldn't help to have a little fun before the rest of her life started, right?

xxxxxSurprise caused Soren to flick his ears forward at her soft thank you. He wasn't used to being thanked by anyone, let alone pretty mares. He smiled and nodded his head, saying thank you without having to voice it. The more he spoke to her, the more he liked her. And inwardly, he hated himself for it. He wasn't about to go and let himself like a taken mare. Yet his heart and his mind had different ideas and so, when she parted ways with him, part of him would be missing. He could feel a frown coming on and just as it was about to, a soft sound filled the cave. Her hooves were shuffling closer. He flicked his ears toward her and looked at her with gentle golden eyes, curious as to what she was doing. And as she pressed her head into his neck, he knew he had never been so content. He let out a sigh of relief and shut his eyes tightly.

xxxxx"Sweet dreams, Tori." Soren hadn't even noticed that he had failed to call her by her full name. It was highly unusual of him, but it felt nothing but natural as it escaped his maw. He drifted off into sleep with the beautiful mare by his side, and dreams of her filled his mind. Hopeless fantasies that would most likely never happen, but he could sure as heck dream about with all of his heart.

xxxxxKintori's own dreams that night were nothing similar. They were of angry, vicious foals popping from baskets only to attempt to maul their mother. Fears of rejection and isolation were revealed within her dreams, and thus, Kintori's sleep was fitful. She awoke many times throughout the night, the last being just before dawn. The sky was a hazy, deep smoky purple outside the cave, as a result of both the storm the night before and the slow rising of the sun. Not knowing the stallion's sleeping habits, Kintori closed her eyes for one last time, enjoying the gentle lull of the male's breathing as she rest against his neck. Once she reopened them, she knew she had to get going. There was no way she'd be able to leave with her watching her; as obvious from her abandonment of her family, she abhorred farewells. Slowly, she lifted her head off his neck. Once she was sure he would not stir, she slowly walked out of the cave. Once out, she glanced back at his sleeping figure and sighed softly. Life with Helberd could never be "happily ever after" after a night like this. This other stallion, Soren, though still a stranger to her held a greater place in her heart than Helberd ever had. With sadness in her heart, Kintori blinked a tear away and walked off in search of her "mate."

xxxxxOnly when light began to stream into the cave did Soren wake from his lovely dreams. His eyes slowly blinked open to the harsh brightness that the early morning brought upon him and a small sigh escaped his maw. He had barely come into consciousness when he noticed something was missing. His head swung around, searching desperately for Kintori. Any sign at all that she hadn't just been some kind of magical daydream. And yet there was nothing. Anguish filled his large golden eyes as he tried to keep himself calm, yet he couldn't help but let out a soft whisper, as he had so many times before when his parents had left and his brother has passed. "Come back..." He couldn't let this beautiful mare get to him. She had a family she had to tend to. A life that she couldn't put on hold. And he had to respect her for leaving as she did. If it had come to saying goodbye, he would never have wanted her to leave. It became settled into his mind that he would make the cave his home for a while. Just long enough to make sure she was gone before he totally abandoned all hope of seeing her once more. He stretched out his wings and slowly walked outside, the warmth of a new day spreading like the hope inside him.
