"They're, like... pets. For the freaks. I guess they're the equivalent of just normal animals, or something? Some of 'em get kind of big. If you let 'em out of their tanks too long, they start getting all gloppy and then they die or whatever, so..."
She sidled over to the floresce tank and tapped on the side of that one, too. "Oh, I remember these guys. Would you believe the freaks have a whole festival celebrating these things? We had to go there and get a bunch of the fish. There's a rarer kind that's prettier, but... I dunno why these ugly things deserve a party." She crumbled a candy between thumb and forefinger and drizzled the remains into the water, watching as the fish bobbed up to eat it, looking surprisingly normal.

"Eeeewwww." Pets? These things? Reine shuddered, scooting towards the next tank and dropping candy in. "Makes sense that freaks have freaky pets.." Did they actually think these things were... cute or something? She realised she knew nothing about halloween's customs and traditions and how halloweeners thought, in general.
"That is so weird," she frowned. "A whole festival? Celebrating what.. how boring they are?" It was interesting, at least, to hear about events like that. The only time she'd been to Halloween so far was for the recent mission.. and they hadn't had much of a chance to observe the Halloweeners, or otherwise find out more about them.
"What're they like? Those.. freaks, I mean." She tried out the same term Madison used. "You've interacted with them before?"

"I have no idea. There were lanterns and carnival games and all kinds of things... and the freaks are... weird." She flicked a candy into the next tank over. "Sometimes they seem weirdly human - they have a high school, they have student council elections for heaven's sake. Except they're not human, even though some of them even look like they are. It's like they're copycatting us or something."
She shuffled over a row, then paused.
"Wait.
... What the hell?"
Blinking up at her was a white... thing... that looked somehow like... "Reine, do you think... what the..."
The tank seemed just as confused; the little identification card read Fracs - Cael- ????
((It's a Fracs Deus Ex AS REQUESTED biggrin ))

"They whaaaat?" Student council elections? That was.. stretching it wayyy too far. "I.. yeah, I saw some of them, during that last mission. One of them tried to curse me or something, said.. what, something about shelves? Another threatened something.. kinda.. awful."
Reine shuddered, remembering Mac's gory description, but Maddie's sudden shout caught her attention, and she moved over.
"What?"
Peering into the tank, Reine felt a chill down her spine, and she looked up at Maddie again- it was clear the other girl was thinking the same thing. White, fluffy, and.. it had glasses, and a scarf. It also looked really really cute, but considering the Mawbbit, she fully expected the Caelius to bite her hand off if she reached for it.
"That's... That's gotta be a.. joke.. or something, right?" If it hadn't been blinking, Reine would have simply assumed it was a plushie.
"It's kind of cute...." Those soulless black eyes, drawing her in. Almost inviting her to pick it up for a hug.

"Does... does this mean... that the freaks keep little... little Caeliuses as pets?!" Madison stared for a moment.
And then she started laughing helplessly. "C-come on, Caeli-kins, time for walkies~ fetch, Caeli-kins! Get the ball! Ooz a good widdle Caeli-kins? Oh my god."
The 'Caeli-kins' tilted its head to the side.

Reine was completely unable to wrap her mind around that thought. Little Caelius... multiple little Caeliuses, sitting in the window of a pet shop or the like.. oh god. She'd read that things from halloween were formed from FEAR, which made sense in Caelius' case, but.. to have it go this far?
"I don't get it," Reine laughed. "Why is he so cute?!" Trying to visualise Caelius with puppy eyes kind of ended up resulting in a mental image she wasn't even going to try to make sense of. But Maddie's laughter- and descriptions- got to her, and she giggled as she tried to imagine it- Caeli-kins running after a ball and tripping over its scarf. She almost wanted to see it happen.
"Heeereee Caely-caely!" Cooing, she dropped in a FEAR candy, and watched for its reaction. The minipet nosed at it curiously, then stomped on it with a paw. Looked like there was still some Caelius in there...
"Can we keep him?!" There was another thought that occurred to her then. "We gotta show everyone.. just.. this is hilarious."

"Oh, man..." Madison wiped an actual laughter-induced tear from her eye. "I, uh... but I dunno... actual Caelius might kick its cute little a** or something. And that would be terrible."
She looked back at the creature and had to clap one hand over her mouth to smother the giggles.

"But he can't hurt himself!" Reine looked almost terrified; she could just imagine Caelius swinging his scythe and probably beheading the poor fluffy little thing. The horror! Best to.. keep it hidden, out of his sight.

"I just want to know why the <********> it looks so much like him..." Madison's voice trailed off. "Wait. Hang on. If... all the freaks come from people being afraid, right? Do you think... this thing is because we're scared of Caelius. So our fears made, like, a Caelikins?"
She gave 'Caelikins' a highly skeptical look and flicked another candy into its tank. It caught the thing in midair and chewed it with relish.

It was a distinctly odd realisation, and one that reminded her of a movie from her childhood- Peter Pan. Fairies were there because children believed in them, right? Which meant that.. following their theory that Caelikins was created from fear of Caelius himself...
"Oh god," she said, giving Madison a look. "You know what this means, right?" She glanced down at the adorable little creature, who had retreated back into its scarf and was snoozing... was it.. was it actually even.. purring? Come to mommy, come on, you want cuddles and a little treatsi-- wait what.
Either way, Reine was resolute. "We need to start spreading more horror stories about Caelius," she said, deadly serious. "I don't want little Caelikins to.. to die, or something.."

"I really, really don't think it's in any danger of biting it." Madison made a face. Caelius was scary enough as it was. "Anyway, it's here now, and we're feeding it and stuff, so it should be fine..."
...
"Why. Is it so cute. Ugh. This is messing with my head."

"But you don't know for suuuuure," Reine whined. She didn't want to come in one day and see... some gross thing in place of cute little Caelikins. Maddie, though, had been around longer, and probably knew better, and so Reine left it there- at best, she'd come in every day and check on him.
"You'd expect it to, I dunno, look a little creepier.." She was just itching to pick up the creature, never mind fear of rabies or something. Instead, she exercised about as much self-control as she had, and settled for feeding it more candies. No one had warned her against spoiling the creatures... "Heeeere Caelius~"
The mental image of real Caelius pawing at treats was hilarious, and also extremely disturbing. Somehow she felt like she couldn't look him in the eye again..

"Um, careful not to... don't feed it too much, or bad things," Madison said, after a moment. She wasn't entirely sure what 'bad things' constituted but she didn't want to find out. Especially not if this Caelius-thing was the victim.

"Well, okayyy," Reine allowed, though she still looked at Caelikins a little wistfully. She would feed him all the things, all of them.. maybe behind Maddie's back, even. It wasn't like she could help it, she just couldn't deal with all of the adorable.
"Speaking of feeding, I think we're done for now?" She surveyed the small tanks, counting them off one by one.

"Yeah, I think so!" Madison rattled the candies in the bottom of her bucket; no little faces looked up at her other than the known opportunists, the little minifreaks that'd take whatever they could get. "No," she told them, firmly.
"Thanks for helping out - it's not a bad duty, really. Not compared to some of the other s**t we could be doing, y'know?"
