He paused, briefly, mid-step at her instructions. Dawn was not a family-minded buck, he had all the family he wanted in Dusk. He had never paused to think twice about the does he had dallied with, nor what he might have left them. He could have acquiesced readily to her request - but the very fact that she would outline such terms so starkly...he had never, one could say, taken such a strong interest in his potential children.

"And what would you do with them?" he started his questioning with.

“What does it matter?” Witch Hunt answered smoothly as she angled towards the north. The trail she chose was a well-worn one and easy to navigate. It would be extremely annoying if he suddenly decided to care about what happened to any possible offspring. “Perhaps I will tear out their innards and paint my face with their blood.” She gave a low chuckle.

"Then I would not have to worry about letting my tongue slip if we were to meet," he politely laughed, but pressed on, "but what if you happened to let them live - what of it if I revealed my role in their making?"

“I suppose…” She began slowly, pondering over each word before she spoke it. “… I would not care if it was during their adulthood. It is the impressionable young age that will be most important to me. I consider it a matter of training and I would be most displeased if that was interrupted.”

A matter of training...

Perhaps she was mad after all. Who knew what manner of brainwashing she intended to perform upon these poor potential offspring, what manner of horror, what manner of torture.

Oh well.

"Alright, I'll abide by your terms."

“Very good.” Witch Hunt said, sounding immenselysatisfied with his decision.

Now that was taken care of, the doe fell into a silence that did not welcome further talk. She continued to lead the way, winding through the swamp to a place where even the morning sun had trouble penetrating.

Now she stopped, completely ignoring Dawn’s existence as she looked first left and then right. “My darling… I know you are here somewhere… I am coming for you.” She crooned lovingly. The one she wanted was sneaky and liked to hide, but she would find it.

This was the first time in the course of their association so far that Dawn had felt distinctly uncomfortable - and, finally, rather sure that she was certainly in some way insane.

She trundled forward, continuously crooning her love for the poisonous plant that awaited her as if she expected it to call back with equal devotion. She searched diligently, stepping every so careful. It would be such a shame if she accidentally stepped on and crushed it. Such a wait it would be. The moist ground squelched as she delved into a boggy section, thick reeds brushing her side.

Finally. There it was. “My sweet, I see you there.”

Witch Hunt let out a sigh of delight. It was a scraggly little thing, a plant with a thick green stem that settled pathetically upon the muddy ground. She dipped her head and nosed it, tongue snaking out to carefully wrap around the stem. Her hoof dug carefully into the mud and nudged the roots up.

Don’t break. She urged it silently and she pried the whole plant up out of the ground.

He watched her - more importantly, watched the plant she was digging out with a thoughtful eye. He had seen this variety before only rarely, but never knew of its deadly properties. Interesting... He would have to point it out to Dusk the next they ran across it, lest his darling sister mistake it for a snack one day they were apart. Darling Dusk. Had she yet awakened? This business would soon be over, and he could then return to her side.

Ah, the plant emerged whole - no mean feat, he could imagine.

Witch Hunt carefully dropped the plant in the dirt and cooed to it lovingly. It was perfect. Not only that, it hadn’t broken. She ran her tongue around her mouth; pleased that she hadn’t had to use her teeth. Even after years of exposure, ingesting even the smallest amount of this particular poisonous plant was not without its drawbacks.

The doe finally spared Dawn a glance. “You are lucky. The final product will be very effective.” She scooped the plant up, focusing intently on how it sat in her mouth, and set off back towards home.

The trip back was longer than necessary due to Witch Hunt stopping to check her new possession every few moments. But they eventually returned, with the doe hobbling slowly into her home and depositing the plant on the floor.

Without another word she got to work.

He had wondered if she would let him observe her methods - it seemed she had nothing to hide. In retrospect, he considered, it would take a foolhardy Kin to try to replicate her work, he had no doubts as to the lethality of the weed she crooned over. This was hardly an ordinary doe.

Witch Hunt worked meticulously; unhurriedly selecting dried berries and other odd pieces to add to the mix as she carefully smashed it into a paste beneath her hoof. She was utterly focused, muttering constant endearments to her creation.

When she was done she let out a soft whistle. There was a scurrying sound and a mongoose appeared. It cast a nasty glance towards Dawn, before looking towards its owner with a mixture of adoration and utter fear.

At a gesture from Witch it moved forward, belly low to the ground, wrapping the poison mixture carefully into a leaf bundle.

“There. My part is done.” The doe eyed him expectantly.

He watched all she did in silence, tracking each move, whether of the doe's or her servile mongoose's, till the mixture was complete and packaged. Tonight, he would complete the job with it, and it would be another mission marked off the list, one that would ensure several lush days for him and his darling Dusk.

But for now, he had...another mission, he supposed he could think of it as. Time would tell if this decision had been one unwise, but - ah, a gentleman must keep his word, mustn't he?

Nodding curtly, he followed her into the unknown.
