"That's right..." the voice said, dripping with eerie glee, "You're nothing more than a test subject for me. A plaything for the..." One of the shadows in a far corner of the room, on the ground, moved slightly, then a man emerged from it. He was dressed all in tight sackcloth, with straw sticking out of the ends of his sleeves and pants, which were tied in place with twine. He held a giant scythe in his hand. A leather hat sat on top of a burlap mask that, combined with his extremely wiry frame and costume, made him look just like a... "...Scarecrow."

Her head snapped towards the movement. "A plaything...."[/b] she repeated quietly.
Sapphire had focused most of her energy into trying to calm down. To just sit right there in her spot and watch for a few moments. The feeling of fear inside her was quickly turning into rage. Strong enough that she couldn't tell who was really feeling it. Either way, staying on the wall was the smartest thing for right now.
Gossamer, however, had other plans.
The woman jumped straigth down from her spot on the wall and landed in a crouch on the ground. She stood, her stance confident and more than just a little agressive. "Well then....I hope you enjoyed that. You won't get the chance to do that again."

Scarecrow took up a fighting stance as well; it appeared to be a variation of Crane-stance kung fu, no doubt altered to account for his scythe. "Hush, little baby, don't say a word... Momma's gonna buy you a mockingbird."

The woman began marching towards him as he took up the fighting stance. She barely seemed to care that he had such a large weapon.
The little nursery rhyme though....THAT was enough to make her stop in her tracks. The blue lenses of the black mask suddenly began to glow with an orange light. The bits of straw that were sticking out of his costume began to burn on their own, and the flames quickly began to spread to the rest of the costume.
She had thought about ripping his voicebox out of his throat for that little rhyme. But....burning him to a corpse seemed a little more satisfying.

Scarecrow looked down at his clothes, and knew that he only had a minute, maybe a little less, before the flames spread to the clothing he was wearing underneath the costume. Granted, those clothes were flame-resistant, but resistant and retardant were two very different things. Once THEY'D caught, he'd have another half a minute before he started to burn. "And if that Mockingbird don't sing, momma's gonna buy you a diamond ring." He took two steps at a running pace, choked up on the scythe to hold it just below the blade, dove forward, rolled forward on the ground, used the non-bladed end of his weapon to throw himself into the air at his adversary, stuck his left arm out, and sprayed another gout of gas at her. This wasn't his usual batch of Fear Gas. This was something he'd prepped just for the occasion, using information Joker had provided. Instead of creating illusions of what the subject already feared, this one created entirely new fears within the subject. Namely Rhabdophobia. "And if that diamond ring turns brass, momma's gonna buy you a looking glass."

The woman tried to reach out and grab onto him as he flung himself towards her. She hadn't been expecting him to have that gas on his person, and quickly tried to get out of it's way rather then grab for him. She wasn't quite quick enough, and inhaled a quick breath of the stuff in. She hissed something under her breath and her eyes began glowing brighter.
She was going to burn this thing to a crisp if it was the last thing she....
....last thing she....
oh.....
The glowing eyes of the costumed suddenly dimmed and faded completely.

The Scarecrow followed through on his pivot lunge, rolling onto the ground again, and this time starting to roll from side to side, slowly putting out the flames, on his body. The whole movement from start to finish probably took a mere five seconds, with another five spent on putting out the fire. Enough for the fire to leave the burlap half in tatters, not enough to completely destroy it. Getting up, he said, "And if that looking glass gets broke, momma's gonna buy you a billy goat."

The woman turned towards him, her fists shaking with rage. Every ounce of her wanted to tear the man limb from limb. And she very easily could. But....she...she couldn't. She didn't want to try anything magic on him. She didn't even want to think about using magic. In fact the more she thought about it.....just being in control of Sapphire was....oh....
Slowly the fists stopped shaking, and the woman's posture changed completely as Sapphire became the one in control again.
Rather than seeming as though she were ready to rip the man's head off, she stepped back and took a more defensive stance.
The gas would have no effect on Sapphire....no matter what her powers were classified as, she didn't consider her powers as magic. And since Gossamer was no too afraid to use her magic, she wouldn't have to worry about being scared of anything Gossamer did.

"You might want to get that other woman out of you if you can..." Scarecrow teased, pointing at her with a half-exposed hand. "...That MAGIC bond you two have is pretty serious..."

Sapphire took another hesitant step backwards. "...I..." she started. She couldn't....she didn't have that kind of power, and Gossamer wasn't willing to use the magic it took to undo this. That was enough to make them both begin to freak out a bit.
"....how....how long till that fun little dose wears off?" she asked. She needed to distract herself. A lot.

"Thrilling..." she replied. Her tone dripping with sarcasm. "So what happens now? I just tie you up and wait for the door to open so I can move onto the next class?"

"You could try..." Scarecrow said, just before moving quickly, almost acrobatically, right in front of Sapphire, spraying her with another dose of Fear Gas. "Or you could stick around, and learn a thing or two more."

Sapphire jumped back, but far to late to avoid the gas. While she still had a head about her to see what was really there and what wasn't, she formed a mass of her blue strands around the man. She needed to trap him, wrap him up, and get those hands of his tied behind him. While she could anyway.

Scarecrow let go of his scythe, and just barely leapt clear of the strands. The scythe should let her THINK she'd caught him. Probably not for very long, but long enough... He slunk back into the shadows. "You REALLY need to think about that magic bond. It's ONLY going to hold you back. Make you BOTH weaker..."
