Mai lifted an eyebrow at Arel's statement. He wanted them to... withdraw from Amityville? Instead of joining in with the hasty "No!"'s that rung out in response, Mai considered the idea. She watched the staff member's face and the dance of emotions that played across it. Would it be better to remove herself from the school if things weren't safe? Just how dangerous was he expecting things to become?

But.. well.. Mai really had no where else to go if it came down to that. She wasn't strong enough or skilled enough to make it on her own yet, and she didn't have any family that she knew of. There was still so much she had to learn here before she could leave. Or at least that was the way she saw it.

And there were.. other things. She glanced sidelong at Vaith. It would be unfortunate if she had to leave the school when she was just starting to make... friends.

"I'd.. like to stay as well," Mai said, her eyes still on Vaith for several moments before she returned her gaze to Arel. "I am of the same mind as Xiu and," a pause as she tried to remember the boil's name. Busted short term memory for the win. "Sparrow." She lifted her shoulders in a small shrug as she said, "Maybe we can help... somehow." She didn't elaborate further on her reasons. The other two had basically said what she was thinking anyway.

Instead of hastily responding as Sparrow and Xiu did, their vehement responses only telling the reaper how much they loved Amityville, Lacie took the time to think upon Arel's expressions. She looked in each corner as well, wondering if perhaps they should have been wary.

She watched quietly, tilting her head. Taking one step forward, she uttered in her quiet voice, "Why?" Red's death, the hunters, the boogiemen, and now the horsemen's capture.. Was there something that Arel wasn't telling them? What was the entire picture? Lacie wished that she was smarter, somebody who could pierce together these puzzle pieces but she could not.

Lacie didn't know what to do. If they thought she should leave, in order to protect her, she might. But she wouldn't leave without knowing why. "What are you expecting?" She looked up at him, as if to try and examine the secretary's thoughts. He must have his reasons, his thoughts or he wouldn't have suggested it. They should hear him out. "What should we be afraid of?" What could it be that dozens of halloween students couldn't measure against? Granted that they had lost the last battle, but with more classes, more training, they could become stronger than the person they were yesterday. Even then, if they couldn't measure up, they had tried.

She reached out for his sleeve, "Please have a little more faith in us than to push us away."

"I'm sorry, but I'll have to agree with everyone here," She didn't expect Arel to be able to answer all of their questions, but she didn't expect him to ask them to withdraw either. Sure, she had seen for herself how powerful these 'hunters' are, but running away didn't sit well with her; it wasn't even stubbornness this time... Pride, maybe? And not wanting to be an ostrich?

She paused, looking at one student to another before nodding, looking determined.

"I'm staying too... I know it might sound rather foolish for a couple of students to talk like this, but I don't think sending all of us away is the solution to this... Problem," She tried to choose her words carefully, but she wasn't sure if she did, "Mister Arel... Why is our school being targeted? Are the other schools facing this problem too?" The way he said it made like they were targeting just Amity, and it made her uneasy thinking about it.

"I'm actually here to talk about withdrawing you from Amityville. The school is simply.... not as it once was, and it is better if you were not involved. In school problems."

...

......

Vaith's poker expression didn't change-- perhaps, the shock from Arel's question froze his face, as one could put it. He glanced at the corner Arel was staring so intently at, murmuring, his familiar Note crawling off his shoulder to sniff at the corners of the room. Understandably, there was no place safe, even if this wing generally tended to be empty. "Check but verify" was a common phrase. His head tipped to meet Mai's cerulean eyes, his hair shifting as one corner of his mouth quirked in a questioning, partially undecided smile.

She had decided. Xiu, Lacie, Sparrow and Lizzy had decided. By that definition, Vaith had decided. His arm lifted to briefly tap against Mai's shoulder in agreement, nodding as he directed his red eyes back towards Arel.

"Better than doing nothing, right? If we don't take care of this place, my favorite naping spot's gonna be gone. Besides, leaving a problem to fizzle out never works anyways."

Like a can of sodapop. It just went horribly flat.

Lazie and Lizzy's questions were good ones. Vaith just had to hope that Arel has the answers. It seemed answers were hard to find nowadays.

The secretary visibly flinched at the word 'Hunters', once again staring at each corner of the room in paranoia. "There's no need-" he tried to say, before he was interrupted by Sparrow, -"to jump to such-", another objection by Mai, and the students following it silenced him completely.

A huge sigh followed the silence, the bedraggled papers clutched in one hand looking about as desolate as Arel himself. "There's no... need to jump to such conclusions, otherwise we'd be as useful as the 'Halloween Daily'" - the secretary trailed off for a second in his personal commentary regarding a very particular article. "Several students have simply expressed concerns regarding Amityville... and ahh.. there have been... restrictions... involving.... certain approaches..."

He was fidgeting a lot as he spoke, wringing the poor withdrawal paper forms - if they were even that, as they suspiciously wrote the words "LAUNDRY" in bold red on them - as if they were nothing better than hand-rags, the words trailing off to something better than a murmur. "What I mean to say is that there are difficulti- OH FOR JACK'S SAKE THIS SCHOOL MIGHT JUST BE CLOSED DOWN SOON ANYWAY."

The last part came out louder than he had intended, the words ringing in the room, echoing in students' ears. He really hadn't meant for the little outburst, but Arel never did things the subtle way, even when it came to paperwork. "I mean -" he tried to interject as he realized how awkward he had just made everything - "There might just be nothing left to protect."

Another loud sigh ensued.

Awkward was a master of understatement. The room wasn't awkward, everything just seemed tunned into silence. Even the sound of their breathing-- Or was that Vaith's ears closing off his senses entirely for a second, reeling from the ice demon's particular statement. Arel's outburst visibly shocked the reaper, his head and shoulders snapping erect from their sleepily stopped posture.

Vaith felt the need to sit down, placing himself on a random instrument. He sat, his legs opened wide, his sigh muffled by his palms which rubbed tiredly against his face. The hunter fiasco was one thing. The bulletin newspapers were another. And now this?

From Arel, of all people?

"Oh Jack. We're in a real huge pumpkin of a problem, aren't we?"

Vaith's mumble voiced softly throughout the room .. but it echoed, so that everyone could hear.

Xiu didn't say anything. Rather, Xiu couldn't say anything--as she stared at Arel, wide-eyed, she found that she was suddenly incapable of forming words. Oh, she had a lot to say on the matter (a lot of protesting to be certain), but her voice failed her. She just stared, her ears and tail slowly drooping as the secretary's words sunk in.

Amityville was going to be closed?

Vaith's mumble broke the silence, and she turned to glance at him briefly before her gaze swept over the others present in the room. When she looked back to Arel and finally managed to speak, her words came out softer and meeker than before. There was an obvious tint of desperation coloring her voice as well. "But...but there has to be something we can do, r-right? Right now...there's still so much to protect." The baku stretched out her arms to gesture towards the overly cramped music room that they were currently occupying. Alright, so she didn't care so much about this room, but the people in this room, and the school as a whole?

There was also the question of what would happen to the students if the school closed. Surely they wouldn't all be expected to go home. And Lizzy's question had been one that she had been wondering about as well: were the other schools also being targeted? If so, and it wasn't just Amityville, then nowhere was safe.

And if it was just Amityville..."I just...I don't understand why."

It seemed as if the secretary was as lost as them all. "I'm... I'm sorry." He at least had the decency to look foolish after the outburst. "There's a lot going on, and the staff are trying their Jack-damned hardest to keep everything afloat, but it's - um - what I mean is, it is probably best if you did not pry too deeply into everything. I understand you appreciate the school as students and were involved, but spreading rumours and looking to find answers will only raise suspicions further."

He sighed again. "I think the best any of you students can do to help is to lie low. I would like to explain more, but I can't, not without making everything worse."

"Lie low. Gotcha."

Viath looked around-- that was the course of action he had decided on. It didnt mean that everyone in the room would necessarily do the same .. But if that was what Arel suggested, instead of causing a ruckus, perhaps it was the best course.

After all, running headfirst hadn't proved to turn out any better.

"Do I assume this is concluded?"

"...I understand." There had been a long, hesitant pause before the baku finally managed to bring herself to speak after the reaper did. Did this mean that all they--the students--could do was sit back and wait? She assumed that they had to keep quiet about what they heard in here as well--who knows what would happen if word got out to the public. Though, Xiu would have liked to talk privately with a few select friends about this...

She down, focusing on her hands that she was wringing anxiously in front of her. "Thank you...thank you for speaking with us, Arel." Xiu murmured, the corners of her lips weakly pulling up, "We...we trust you."

Lacie looked shocked by the shouted words. So much that she fell backwards, her eyes staring at Arel with surprise, fear as if she couldn't believe the words that he had just spoken. She hadn't been at Amityville long, but she hadn't expected it to close so abruptly after her short time there. In the shocked silence, and Vaith's and Xiu's words, Lacie had time to think about what he had said. "....I see." She finally answered. "I'll do as you say." Her voice was stripped of all emotion, speaking as an obedient child. She didn't understand yet she knew Arel's words must have been true. Even his own exhaustion underlined the fact that he had been working hard as well.

"Thank you." She followed Xiu's lead. They hadn't been left in the dark, but now they had much more questions than answers. And a horrifying realization that filled Lacie with hopelessness. There was nothing that they could do.

She didn't have the courage to attempt a smile as Xiu did. It was all that she could do to turn away, her eyes filling with tears. She wiped them away with the back of her gloved hands, wishing that this was a nightmare. But Lacie knew in her that it wasn't. Why was it that no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't seem to do anything useful? It never had. And that knowledge hurt the reaper the most.

The secretary simply nodded, awkwardly shuffling those papers back and forth, back and forth. He gave them possibly the Most Pathetic Encouraging smile ever: it sort of looked like he had fed himself too many Fear Candies. "I know it seems like we can't do much... but Amityville has and always will be around. No matter what happens, the school isn't anything without its... students."

It was awkward, it was informal, but the vague words of encouragement - and possibly praise - were there. The secretary looked down, suddenly embarrassed. "I um, I gotta go." And with that, he shot out of the room as if his scarf was on fire.

Arel might have left like he was on fire but he left the room frozen cold. With shock. Vaith shook his head, standing up and pacing around the room. He seemed to have no particular destination, hands linked around his back and withdrawing to tug at his long locks. It was like a string of nervousness was unbundling from within, setting the reaper abnormally high-strung.

He could understand how adults got stinkin' drunk off pumpkin wine now. He never understood it before .. but he was starting to get bits and pieces of why they might now. Amytiville would always be around .. Arel's word choice was interesting but foreboding. Vaith never liked "buts." But this was a good thing, right? Those words were encouraging, right?

(VAITH JUST USED A 'BUT' ARGH)

Vaith had incredibly mixed feelings about this. He stretched his words, stopping in his pacing suddenly as if he found the insant solution to this problem. He found his solution.

"IIIIII am going to take a nap."

A great indicator on how Vaith dealt with things. Sleeping apparently. Better than drinking or something detrimental to his health. Detrimental .. to his sleep schedule. But Vaith would adjust.

Mai was stunned silent by Arel's proclamation that the school might be closed. Not that it wasn't usual for her to be quiet, because that was quite normal. She was the type that usually didn't like to speak unless she had something worth saying. But this, this had her truly at a loss. Her mouth opened and closed once, as she tried in vain to think of something encouraging to say.

She lost her opportunity as Arel made a few hasty comments and all but fled the room. They were to lie low? His advice was almost a relief to her. Mai felt like the whole situation was simply over her head. She wasn't particularly strong or influential at all.. what could she possibly do to help the school? And clearly Arel wasn't feeling particularly optimistic about the prospect of their assistance anyway.

Vaith's stirring drew her attention as he paced the room. He looked like one giant bundle of nerves, tension in his every movement. She could definitely relate, feeling edgy and restless herself. When he mentioned a nap, Mai perked up slightly. Nap! Brilliant. Nevermind that he hadn't actually invited her, she would just follow him home.

"A nap sounds good," Mai said quietly. She attempted somewhat of a lame smile at the other students as if in apology for the circumstances of their meeting. It would have been nice to meet them without all this foreboding hanging in the air. She walked over to Vaith and stood very close to him. Discreetly, she slipped her hand into his, giving his fingers a comforting squeeze. "Maybe things won't seem so bad after some sleep." She felt like it was a weak statement, but there wasn't much else for her to say.

Jack, this was...

The baku sighed deeply as Arel rushed out of the room, instinctively reaching out and linking her arms with the person closest to her--Lizzy. Hoping that the spider demoness wouldn't mind, she closed her eyes for a moment, resting her head on her friend's shoulder, taking a deep breath. It was reassuring to hear that the staff were trying to do something to keep the school open, but the fact that the threat was there at all was frightening. What would they do if the school closed? Still, it looked like all they--the students--could do right now was exactly what Xiu hadn't wanted to do: sit and wait for things to happen.

Another sigh, and she opened her eyes "...We'd better get going." It wouldn't be good if a bogeymen caught them all here together, especially with how suspicious they seemed to be lately. She started to the door, but paused as she spotted Lacie. Was the reaper...crying? Her eyes seemed glassy.

Without a word, Xiu slipped free so that she could give her friend a hug, smiling weakly when she drew back.

Time to go. "Sparrow?" She cast a glance towards the boil to make sure he was alright, and then turned to look at Vaith and Mai. "Have a good nap. It...it was nice meeting you." The last part was specifically addressed to the ghost. She only wished that they had met under better circumstances than the one that they had presently been thrust into.

Well, time to go.
