Ridley's frown didn't falter, but her eyes switched for a very scrutinizing gaze as her fingers began to play with the cards in her hands. "Fine, because I'm not going to do any extra work..." That was just stupid really, she had enough as it was with school. And her gaze relented finally.
Especially with Ellie's question. Her orange eyes turned to the table where the other lemons remained unharmed and she turned back to the blonde, "its for a science project we have to do. I'm using them as a power source and stuff, Conner suggested trying it but I wanted to see how many lemons I could get on it for more power and stuff." So, maybe it was to see something combust, just not a lemon.

Science wasn't Ellie's forte. In fact, in high school, not too long ago (perhaps a year ago), she had managed to get people to flood out of her chemistry class in a combined effort of failure that ended up with unexpected gas coming from their lab. So she wasn't exactly going to be offering anything critical to Ridley's endeavors.
Instead, all Ellie offered was a lame "...at least it ain't a potato battery. That's overdone." The blonde wandered over closer to the table where all the lemons were, taking a look at the set up as if she actually knew what she was doing. She didn't actually know, but that wasn't something the orange-haired child needed to know.
"...Conner's yer other brother, right?" Her good hand reached out to pick up a lemon, as if she was preparing to analyze the fruit for bruises or the like at the market. "...speaking of yer brothers... how's Max doin' at school? Haven't seen that a** since graduation an' all..." She wasn't exactly friends with Max for several reasons, but it didn't mean that the blonde couldn't be curious. She glanced back to the child, a grin somehow managing to find its place on her face.

This change of subject was a welcome from what she considered a fail with the note cards. Her hands still clutched them, but her mind had forgotten them in favor of the lemons that were on the table on the patio.
"Really? I hadn't seen any potato ones, I don't see how that would work and stuff... I read stuff like lemons worked really well since they were.. acid.. or something." That sounded right, but still a bit off. Ridley wasn't sure, but she followed Ellie towards the table, but went past the older girl to kneel on one of the chairs and hovered over her project.
"Yeah, he's pretty good with food stuff so I guess that's how he got this idea," aside from probably doing it himself. Really, she wasn't too sure. The orange haired girl eyed Ellie as she handled the lemons and made a small attempt to reach out for it, trying to take it back. She didn't want to lose another one, she wanted it to be super powered!
"Max is fine," she answered blandly, "he's at Georgetown playing football and stuff. That's in DC and stuff, I got to go visit him when he moved into his dorm and stuff. It's nice," she explained further. "Can I have my lemon back?" Yup, she didn't notice how Ellie had kind of made a jest at her brother.
And that grin.

The blonde merely rotated the lemon within her grips, not even really looking it over as the child spoke of her brothers Conner and Max. Conner sounded like a pansy if he was into the food thing. All she could do was imagine a younger looking Max wearing a frilly apron. She couldn't help but let out a bit of a snicker.
"...Yeah... that meat-head was always all 'bout American football..." It wasn't her sort of sport, so she really didn't care too much about it. "At least he's alive and junk..." With a half a shrug, she finally took a look at the lemon the child was trying to get back from her.
"...dude... you'd think this lemon was made outta gold or somethin'... wutever... 'ere ya go!" Casually, the tomboy tossed the lemon into the air slightly in a playful manner, assuming that the child would be able to catch it after her.

Ridley eyed Ellie for a moment there, this time the snicker didn't go unnoticed and the little girl had to wonder what the blonde was thinking about. She frowned as the older girl went on about her brother in a rather unpleasant manner but held her tongue; before he left, Max had told her not to let what Ellie said get to her. Well, if they ever encountered each other, which Max wouldn't have expected to be in this kind of capacity.
So, she held a frown. Her older brother was alive, yup! And doing awesome! That's all that mattered.
As was catching the lemon. Ridley's brain went into a small panic as she held her arms out to catch the citrus fruit in her hands, managing with a soft basket catch with both hands. "I already lost a few of them to the dog," she grumbled, "and my mom won't buy me more and I need as many as I can get to get this super bright."
With that, she gently placed the lemon among the others as they were arranged on a circular surface - for easy transport - and stuck metal pins and pennies in specific spots. To prove what she was doing to Ellie, Ridley went ahead with the set up and connected all the lemons together and then put the last of the connectors into the small LED at the end of the chain, only stepping back when the little light flickered on. "Ha!"

The kid was able to catch her lemon easily and a smirk found its way to her cheek. "...dude... it's just'a lemon... I could buy ya more if ya needed them." Shrugging her only good shoulder, she glanced over to the two dogs. Aque had pretty much decided to flop on top of Ridley's beagle. The poor thing was wriggling desperately to get out from under the blatantly heavier dog.
Having let go of the leash earlier in an effort to find her cards, the tomboy eventually called out "Aque, Come!"
For a brief moment the Blue Merle dog's ears perked up before he stood up, relieving the smaller dog of his prison, and trotting over to the blonde. Carefully, the girl bent her knees so she could crouch down and snatch up the end of the leash.
"...probably should get goin' an' all. OH!" There was a pause in her voice as she straightened up and moved onto reclaiming her backpack. "...Ya gotta tell me... what does yer dad do fer a livin'? He's so huge... I gotta know!"

Ridley took great notice how Ellie didn't seem all the bit impressed with her lemon experiment, so of course there was a bit of a pout. "I think it works awesome enough with these lemons," she replied a little bit happier than how she looked. "Thanks though," at least she had offered. That was kind of awesome of Ellie.
As Ellie's attention went to collecting her canine, Ridley silently watched as the larger dog bounded over to the cast ridden blonde. The little girl glanced at her own dog as he whimpered from the loss of his playmate, he was still obedient enough to not bound over to the group - he hadn't been called after all - but his tongue lulled to the side panting and his paws danced on the ground ready for round two.
Ridley turned back to Ellie when the question had been asked, "Oh!" Did she not know? The orange haired girl figured she would have mentioned it at some point, "he's a firefighter!" She stated proudly.

A single shoulder shrugged at the offered gratitude.
"Eh... I'd jus' be makin' up fer my own f*ck up... that's all..." With that, the girl awkwardly bent down again to get her backpack. Rather than ask the child to help her zip the zipper up, the tomboy struggled for a moment to get it shut halfway. It was good enough.
The mention of what Mr. Pendergast did for a living seemed to cause the young adult to grin once more. "...okay... that's a kick a** job! Glad t'know there are still some men left in th'world!"
With dog and bag in tow, Ellie then offered a half wave to the child, then made her way towards where she had entered the yard. She was a big kid. She could let herself out.
