"What the hell kind of tv shows were you watching at age twelve?" Davey asked. Which was not to say that he and his mates hadn't been trying to sneak porn, or at least M and R rated movies, at the same age, but that usually wasn't true of girls. (Living with Sarah had proven beyond a doubt that girls weren't half an innocent as Davey had previously thought, but that was still different from tv with 'too much sex' at that age.)
Davey's lips quirked at the miss, but rather than making a taunt, he simply said, "I'm glad it isn't just me."
As for the sparring, he'd definitely take Cass up on the offer again in the future. After he got over what was likely to be a resounding defeat.
Lunging, Davey scored a line along Cass's ribs. Well, maybe not quite so resounding, which was a balm to his pride.

"It was a cartoon, I thought it was safe!" Cass chimed in her own defense. She lived with her parents, after all... and not just with them. With them. In a car. On the road. It was hard to be too naughty.
Ribs.. Ribs.. Her weakness.. ribs. Ow.
Cass actually flinched away at the strike on her ribs. "Careful! Caelius nearly broke one of those recently." she chided, but the lingering pain in her ribcage reflected in her swing before she stepped back, pressing her palm to said offended rib, checking on it with a certain degree of paranoia.
It's fine, Cassandra. Keep on your toes.

"Huh," Davey said. Yeah, he could see how a kid would think cartoons would be safe. They used to be, at least when Davey was growing up. Nowadays it seemed everything was aimed at an older audience, forcing people to grow up too fast - just look at those goddamn 'prostitots'. Davey had been horrified every time his girlfriend had pointed out childrens' fashions in her glossy magazines, celebrity kids or regular.
"Well, at least it didn't scar you too badly. Here you are, a well-adjusted monster hunter versed in swords and guns, living in a remote location and working for a secret organisation run by people are who most likely criminally insane." Davey raised his eyebrows and then smirked. Oh look, he did have a sense of humour!
His eyes narrowed, zooming in on Cass' ribs as she spoke of Caelius. "Sorry. Are they okay?" The last thing he wanted to do was re-injure barely healed wounds, especially in a friendly spar.
He should have saved his worry for himself, Cass' next strike scoring a decent line down his chest and side. Instinct guided his next move, half-turning away from her blade and bringing his own down at her upper thigh.

"Well, I was always sent into enemy territory as a kid, so...." she laughed a bit, "My parents played off my 'issues' as me being a child psychic of sorts. A young ghost hunter, you might say." She was referencing the television shows where people geared up to go into 'haunted' places and all sorts of weird s**t happened.
That was more or less her life as a kid.
Still, she laughed. "Oh man, I think everybody here is a tiny bit broken, at the very least." Never the less, she was fortunate for the FEAR shield even when Davey's blade came down on her leg, flinching. Even though he hadn't just cleaved her leg off didn't mean that it hadn't just hurt like a b***h all over!
Shhiiiittttt!
She wasn't so eager to put any weight into that leg so soon, however, throwing off her balance to her other leg for compensation as she swung again at the older hunter, smiling lightly.

Davey hadn't expected Cass to be so free with her past. And he certainly hadn't been expecting to hear something like that. "That sounds tough. So you've known about the weird s**t we fight for most of your life?"
Not fully aware, of course. But known it was there, in the shadows, something decidedly not normal. Bloody hell, Davey had thought it bad just known for several months before Caelius found him. To have spent your whole life like that? Davey couldn't imagine it.
His lips did quirk at the corners as Cass claimed they were all slightly broken. "Of course," he agreed. By the testing, if nothing else - no one became a Hunter unscathed, even those who seemed the most well adjusted and normal.
Pain flared along his arm as Cass struck. Davey hissed and reminded himself firmly that he couldn't lose his grip on Azrael or Cas would have this finished before he could pick his blade back up. So despite the pain, he kept moving, striking back out. He missed, but he counted it a success that he kept a firm hold of Azrael.

Frankly, Cass saw nothing to hide in it. It was a stupid past - and for it she felt a touch lackluster in comparison to the other trainees who had a shot at a slightly more 'normal' track of life, but it wasn't too bad.
"Since I was about five, yeah. You kind of get used to it when you start so young, though - you stop jumping at dark shapes moving out of the corner of your eyes and the like." she didn't seem to mind, though. "Ever played a survival horror game where you didn't have a weapon? It was kind of like that, only with less close-call maulings."
She seemed to notice when Davey's grip on his weapon waned a bit, giving him a light tap on the wrist in warning before she stepped back away from Azreal to keep from getting struck, a grin on her face.
"I like the variety we get from the levels of broken around here though. Keeps things interesting."

Davey eyed Cass with new respect. Since she was five...? Davey couldn't even begin to imagine what that must have been like. "Seems like you're less broken than most," he said. He doubted he would have made it this far for this long if it had been him in Cass' place. "Or at least, put yourself back together well enough."
That was the Hunters all over, maybe. All broken, but pieced back together strong enough to do what was needed. ... Even if the cracks sometimes showed. (More often for some than for others, *coughDoctorHcough*.)
"Interesting is certainly one word for it," Davey said dryly. It never got boring, that was true. But that didn't mean that there were certain levels of insanity, or certain people, that Davey wouldn't prefer to be rid of.
Dropping Azrael lower, Davey made a thin slice low on Cass' leg. Nowhere near enough to impede her movement, but Davey felt a little better for having broken her guard. Cass was insanely good - he'd need to spar with her again sometime.

"I didn't have to try too hard with the present company the island offers, though." Cass replied, wincing slightly as her leg was cut into before she stepped to slash at Davey again, planting herself as solidly as she could on both feet to bring Nicodemus upwards.
She really needed to work on her attack patterns, they were somewhat predictable when she only had the blade to work with. She noted this in the back of her head to the Tonberry who was stationed there.
It wasn't a bad little spar at all, really. Even if it had been put off for a bit too long. She could feel her shoulders aching from wielding the heavier half of her weapon so openly and knowing her luck, she wouldn't be getting much of a break to recover with it either. Which may have been why she was pressed so hard to make heavy blows and try to get this spar ended before her energy waned completely.

"Yes, it's hard not to look sane by comparison when you're standing next to certain people, isn't it?" Davey agreed. As a whole, the trainees had nothing on their instructors. It made Davey wonder... "Do you think the longer people work here, the crazier they get?"
It might explain a few things. Or people, rather.
Cass' last strike was a good one - finishing off strong. Davey could feel his FEAR shield about to break. Time for one last stand, though.
~ Or not. ~ Azrael wasn't impressed with the tiny cut inflicted on their opponent. ~ Where is your head today? Not in the battle, that's for certain. ~

"Seeing what we see, I'd be surprised if they don't get a couple of...issues....or a subscription. Whatever." she shrugged lightly, overstepping as she moved to strike Davey again, causing her to falter and go off balance.
Not a very impressive attempt at all, her arms protesting against her course of action for the entire thing. The gun would have been an easy finish, this blade in her hands was heavier and took more effort to swing. Something in the back of her head told her that Nicodemus was doing it on purpose.
