She might be over the awkwardness, but it lingered around Nyyrikki like the plague. The soft brush of her body against his side had his spine going ramrod straight, intensely aware of her presence. It wasn't until she ran into the kitchen that he released the breath he hadn't known he was holding.
"If I thought you knew how to treat a burn, I wouldn't have said I was going to the nurse." He wasn't that much of a moron. He knew Danny was about as likely to know how to reverse something she inflicted as Demi was to wear a pink tutu. That was to say, not likely at all. But, her mad dash for the kitchen had alerted him to the sink. Turning it on experimentally, he gaped at the cool water the flowed from the pipe. ... "Danny there's water in your dorm."

Danny pouted. She knew that water was there. She definitely knew. Stupid Moure had come over once and "experimented" in the same exact way. Scared her to death the first time it had. Luckily, she was prepared. She could do this. Sure her body had gone a little stiff, but she could do this.
"Yes, yes it does. Will you please turn it off?" she said, still pouting. Maybe his hand was hurt, and water was the way to treat it, but it didn't make her any less uncomfortable. It was like having a steady flow of bullets for Rikki. Or like Edel was in the room. Ugh. Edel.
Okay she couldn't do this anymore. Danny stormed off into her own room and flopped back onto her bed, face first. She put her head down on her pillow and pouted. Stupid water and its stupid stupidity.

"I need the water, Danny. I'm not a flame demoness who acts like a baby like some of the people in this room." He gave her a pointed look, his eyes trailing her as she exited the room. Why did he feel so tense when she was around him now? Running his hand under the water until the ache was just a dull throb, he turned off the water as she asked and stepped out of the kitchen and into her room, where he was greeted by....
Hnnnnnngngngnnnngh.
He sidestepped the bed, trying to angle himself away from the view. There was no disputing what kind of man Rikki was.
"There. The water's off." Did his voice sound a little off? Maybe.

"Seriously?" He crossed his arms, one brow raised. "Fine, if you're going to act like that, then we're going to get serious. Either you're going to tell me why you've been avoiding me all week, or I'm going to turn the water on and leave."
He'd intended to drop it after they'd had that episode, but if she was going be like this then he'd take revenge.

Danny looked up at him at the threat of leaving the water on. She gave him the puppy dog eyes.

He ... He wouldn't do that to her right? Still, she had to comply with him a little. He did sort of deserve an explanation. Kind of. No he did, he did!
Sighing, Danny propped herself on her elbow and began a short monologue. "Well in the lantern shop, when I fell on you, my face got all hot and weird. I'm like. A fire demmoness. We don't get hot. So I was afraid I was sick," okay that was a bit of a lie, but still, "So I left. I didn't want you getting sick."
With another sigh, she looked down at the pillows, eyebrows furrowed very deeply. This next part confused her to no end. "But then later, there was no ... infectatation." She tripped over that word that Malodore had taught her and continued, hoping Rikki would understand what she meant. "So I'm not sure why my face felt all warm. Its kind of warm too now."
She finished her short story and bit her thumbnail. She still didn't get it. Talking it out hadn't helped at all! Maybe Rikki could provide answers?

"Infection." He'd leaned back as she explained herself, entirely convinced of her reasoning, though not entirely satisfied. As she finished though, he angled himself forward and placed a stained hand on her check softly. Compared to his body temperature, she'd always be warm, so he couldn't really tell the difference.
"Does it feel warm all the time, or only sometimes?"

She looked down for a moment. "Yeah that. Infection." He was making fun of her, wasn't he?
As he scooted closer, she found herself scooting closer too. He really was warm. He smelled like ... well Rikki. Did that count as a smell?
His hand rested on her face, and she felt that weird warmth again. Was it because of his fireplace-self, or her disease? Which was it? Plainly, but clearly confused, she half-whispered, half-spoke, "Only sometimes." He really was close, wasn't he.
"So ... how's Lilura?" Danny couldn't really think of anything else to ask about. Her face still felt funny, and it was starting to spread to her mind. Either way, her timing was horrible as always.

It only took that slight change for him to realize what was happening. He smirked like the arrogant male he was, but tucked the bit of information away for his own use. If he was smooth, he could change the subject and she would never know he'd just stashed away a secret weapon.
Except, she changed the subject first, and it was like ice water being dumped over his head. With a swift movement he was not only distanced from her, but across the room, arms crossed over his bare chest. "I... I don't know," he answered honestly. "I haven't talked to her lately." In fact, he'd been avoiding her much the way Danny avoided him. The reasons couldn't be more vastly different, however.

Danny found herself frowning immensely when Rikki got up. They'd been having such a nice conversation with the warm fuzzies and the infections and ...
Well nevermind that. The real problem was that Rikki was standing up and unhappy, and he was happy when they were together like before. Well this was a simple one. Why didn't they just give her the no-bell pieces prize already? "Rikki get back over here," she said bluntly.
Like a little kid, she held her arms open wide for a hug. A friendly hug. There was absolutely nothing sensual about this.

It was that simple, and exactly what he needed, because he well and truly felt like s**t. He didn't know what was going on in his head, and everything was just jumbled and...
He didn't stop at just hugging her. He lifted her off the bed into his arms, burrowing his face into the curve of her neck as he tried to just calm himself down. He'd been a wreck, and it wasn't just Danny's fault. He'd blamed it on Danny, but that didn't mean it was right. He was messed up...
"You even smell like burning things," he laughed feebly.

Yaaay he was coming back. Yaaay he was walking over. Yaaay he wa-
Okay now he was lifting her up. Wheee this was fun, wasn't i-
Was he ... was he okay? This didn't feel like a happy hug. Well it was a happy hug for her, nothing was wrong with her anymore, the water was off, remember? Rikki though ... he didn't seem to happy. He seemed rather exhausted really.
Awkwardly, Danny hugged him with one arm and patted him lightly on the head with the other. It worked out rather well that they were the same height and all. "Shoooosh paaap," she cooed. What did those words even mean? Well they sounded comforting. "Iiiiiit's okay." What was okay exactly?
When he finally said something, Danny retorted with, "You smell like ... Rikki." Intelligent Danny, really. Unfortunately, she also found herself burying her nose in his blackish, boilish hair. It was so soft and nice... She continued patting his head though. Was he going to be okay?

He had some serious thinking to do when he got back to his dorm... But the strange, comforting noises that Danny made succeeded a bit in pushing that issue away until he was alone.
He set her down gently, though it wasn't very far for her to go (oh jack he was short, he needed another growth spurt or something), and broke the hug. "Like Rikki?" He laughed quietly. "Must smell pretty good. Rikki is awesome."

Rikki was the one to break the hug, leaving Danny feeling a little relieved, and a little saddened. Relieved because Rikki wasn't about to break down and cry on her. It would be really awkward if her cried and put her tail out. Saddened though, because that hug had been quite nice.
Giggling, she said, "Ayup, Rikki smells delicious!" She giggled again at the idea that any person had their own smell. Was there a Danny smell too? She hoped it smelled nice. Like orange screamsicles.
Looking up at her ceiling, she said, "So 're you ready for movie club tonight?" she asked, nonchalantly. He looked a tad preoccupied though, like he was thinking really hard.

"Oh man, I almost forgot about movie club." He didn't sound as concerned as the words warranted, but that was just him. Life was easily reorganized for him. Taking her in one last quick parting hug, he nodded. "I'll be there, but I've got some things to do first. Plus, I can't go without a shirt on. I'll meet you there, okay?"
He left just as abruptly as he'd come, an unusually serious expression on his face.
