Actually.. She paused, her thoughts wandering for just a moment. I was counting on their intellectual prowess to help us find a weakness, which is of course the only way we will be able to prevail. Invictus, in particular, may be of great assistance. Alliance with him is.. almost mandatory, in my opinion.
The unspoken words in Malodore's voice made Riley chuckle, and the backs of her fingers brushed delicately along the length of it's neck. It was a fond, intimate touch - and it distracted her. Hmm. Their time spent in that island was not without its cost. Our time there was fleeting, and yet it left an impact on us. You can imagine what prolonged exposure must have done to the horsemen..
Her fingers rose to skim the edges of Malodore's mask. There was something about the way she moved that made it seem as though her mind wasn't entirely focused on the conversation. Taking that into consideration, I think they are very strong willed. A lesser creature would be a babbling mess at this point.

"Ah, yes. Of course. You believe the... damage... was not enough to unmake their minds entirely?" Malodore was still hesitant. It had only allied with the then-unknown Horsemen on the Island out of sheer desperation. Out of not having any other choice. Riley's trust was not to be taken lightly, of course, but... still.
"They are willing to make common cause with us, then?" It sighed. "I only fear... since the Hunters meddled with them, then perhaps they are... ah... compromised. Not now, perhaps, but I am leery of trusting their power above all else. It was turned against us once..."

Malodore's words had a kernel of truth to them that could not be ignored. She dropped her hand from it's wandering, placing it on its shoulder, and took in a deep, calming breath.
You're right. It would be wise to enter into this alliance with caution. I feel confident about Invictus, but I barely know the other Horsemen. I cannot be sure they are not compromised, as you say. This is even more reason for us to intertwine ourselves with them, and keep close. We must remain watchful - whether they mean to or not, I believe they will be the key to our victory.

"Our victory? Hm." Malodore leaned heavily (inasmuch as it could) against her, though not so much out of affection as sheer weariness. "How has such a thing become our responsibility? This should be a battle for seasoned warriors. All Halloween should rise." A hint of frustration crept into its voice. "My Casa does not have a monopoly on foolish tradition and ignorance. I had hoped it would be otherwise."

Riley felt the weariness in it's voice, and sympathized. She did not, however, empathize. Where Malodore loathed the idea of taking on the hunters, she welcomed it. She considered it a necessity to the greater plan laid out before her, but to burden her beloved with that was unnecessary. She reached up and carefully took off its hat, placing it carefully on top of the couch edge, before settling it down into her arms fully without obstruction. Her face pressed flush against the back of its skull.
I could have told you that ignorance can be found everywhere, sadly. Perhaps, one day, all of Halloween will. Unfortunately, it seems that those in power right now wish to keep this fight under wraps. The vision of the mayor floated up into her mind, and her eyes fluttered in anger. It is the nature of the beast, when dealing with war. The weakest are always sacrificed first.

"Weakest." It was, possibly, the closest Malodore had ever come to growling a word. "Pezzi di merda vigliacchi." It allowed itself to be drawn fully into her embrace, its wings chiming faintly with each movement. "Then we must make a new tradition. A new world that does not bury itself within shadow."

Malodore's foul language made Riley's blood boil with pleasure. She almost hoped it could feel just how hot that tone made her, because she liked it very much. Yes.
After a moment of gathering herself, she murmured a response with a faint twirl of content surrounding each word. I am quite looking forward to making new traditions with you, Malodore. It sounds like exactly the kind of future I hope for.

"I know we are instructed not to destroy humans, but... there are so many of them." Malodore opened its beak in a smile that, despite the lack of expression available to it, seemed edged with something cold. "Plague doctors were born from masked figures stalking the edges of a great death. A death that swallowed half their world. Those tales are told in the annals of the Casa's history. They cannot all be Hunters, surely... and, surely, they will not miss a few among millions?"

Now you're just trying to get me all riled up. She fussed at the plague doctor, burying her face against the side of it's head. Stop saying such delightfully deviant things, or I will have no will power left around you.
Riley leaned back on the couch, pulling away from the spot where she'd buried herself, and let her head rest on the soft cushions behind her. Still, as much as you have made me realize that caution must be taken with the Horsemen, I will be interested to see what they have to say. It is unlikely that any words they offer will be flippant, after all - whether they are true, or not, I'm sure there will be much to be gleamed from their presence.

"Leaping out at them from a closet will hardly suffice - I prefer to think of it as expedience rather than deviance," Malodore protested. But not too much.
Her last words had the ring of truth, and the plague doctor nodded. "They have had more contact with these Hunters than any of us. For good or ill, we should gather from them what they can. There is so much we do not know... but, with any luck, there is much our adversaries do not know, either."

Then we are agreed. Riley squeezed the plague doctor in her arms, before gently moving it as she was looking to get up. And we will go there.
She stood, and held her hand out for Malodore, to help him up. Together.

"Si... but must it be right this instant?" It was rather difficult for Malodore to manage a pleading look, but it was trying.

Riley's expression softened, and she dropped back down to sit on the edge of the couch, her arms sliding underneath Malodore's body to pull it back into her arms. A chuckle escaped her thoughts before she answered.
Of course not. She whispered quietly, settling in for some well deserved quiet time with her beloved.
I'm not going anywhere.
