"And as with religion, aliens have shoved and probed their way into everyday life. Especially for people around here. I don't know if you've seen some of the damage that has happened..." Castille shook her head remembering a few battles that included an exploding and very expensive to replace fountain in the city square last christmas. That as before she knew it all existed, and that it wasn't aliens, but magic that drove the fighting. "From what I've seen on the news, there are two sides. Maybe our city is just a battleground for a glorified West Side Story."

The thought of anyone she knew fighting the Negaverse through choreographed dance was laughable, though she kept it contained. "Space is a crazy thing. Here was thought that star wars was completely made up or " she paused, giving Micah a wink "a cluttered combination of previously posted novels and mythology, and then we find a planet that really does have two suns that rise and fall each morning. Maybe we are so underdeveloped that aliens don't want anything to do with us, which is totally fine with me. I have no interest in being abducted thank you."

The older man behind the counter came up to them and peered through the glass keeping the ice cream separate from the customers. "Find anything you like?" he asked, preparing a scoop. Castille looked at the girl and said "Sharing is a good plan to me! I'll order the Chocolate chip cookie dough one then. In a dish." She added when she realized the man was still paying attention to them. He nodded and scooped out the ice cream, handing the plastic bowl to Castille. He rang her up and then turned to Micah while Castille found a table saying "And for you?"

"Maybe aliens are religion," Micah joked, nudging Castille's side gently with her elbow. Her laugh died when Castille mentioned the news. Of course she'd seen the damage. How could she not have. Micah lowered her eyes to the floor as she thought. "But why this city? Why not some other planet that's... worth fighting for? Earth doesn't have any eceptional technology. And we're pretty pitiful creatures. Why fight on our planet?" But maybe that was just it. Because the human race was so pathetic, thier planet was considered expendable.

The man's voice brought Micah back to her senses. "German chocolate, please," Micah muttered, still partially lost in her thoughts. "Bowl please," she finished after a moment. She handed over too much money and didn't wait for her change. It didn't matter. She followed Castille to the table and frowned into her ice cream.

"From those pictures..." she said softly, "They look like they could kill us all. Aren't you scared?"

Castille could see her new friend was troubled. Something about the way that she was absent during the whole ice cream ordering process let Castille know that she was uncomfortable.

She shrugged, taking a bite of ice cream. "Why did the Joker choose Gotham City to attack instead of Seattle? Maybe it was random. Maybe there is something here that both sides want. Or maybe this just happened to be the right place for this battle. I mean, if they had picked a super big city like New York, one of them would eventually be caught. There are far more police there than in Destiny City. But if they picked a tiny little town, eventually those people would call someone bigger, like CIA. Or maybe it's in the city's name. Destiny. That's what it certainly felt like. It was destiny for her to find that talking cat, fate that she became a sailor scout. "I don't think I'm scared as much as curious. And I hope I don't ever meet someone that has powers or aliens or whatever they are."

"What if on whatever planet the aliens are from, they don't have the technology we have? Or like they don't have water or something?" The ice cream was heaven to her. Even as cold as it was freezing outside. She offered the bowl to Micah, saying "You want a bite?"

Micah was strangely thankful for the Batman reference. It was something she understood. Something she was familiar with. Micah may have been over dramatic when she related the reference to a buoy in a sea of strangeness. Then again, she didn’t really care. She poked at her ice cream idly as she listened to Castille. Her reasoning didn’t make her feel any better. So they were defenseless and fighting barbarians? It was no wonder Micah’s terror increased as she spoke.

Oh, there Micah went again, letting her constant fear of the unknown drag down what should have been a happy gathering of new friends. She shook her head to rid herself of the disturbing notion. It wasn’t happening now, so Micah was able to shove it into a corner and pretend it didn’t exist.

She force a smile, which easily became real, and pushed her own ice cream to meet Castille’s.

“But of course. That’s why we bought the flavors, to share!” She giggled and dipped her won spoon into Castille’s ice cream.

“Someone told me we were reading 100 Years of Solitude next, is that true, do you know?” Micah hadn’t read that book yet, and from what she had learned about it from the school library, it was sure to be interesting.

Man, the conversation sure got gloomy fast. Castille took another spoonful of her icecream before poking her spoon into the chocolate dream sitting in front of Micah. The girl seemed to shake herself loose of being depressed, and soon the conversation turned to what it had originally started with. The now empty spoon was tapped against her chin thoughtfully while her eyes traveled to the ceiling tiles above.

"You know, I heard that too, but so far I don't think that one has been confirmed." She said, wondering about the book. Castille had never heard of it before, but if they other books they had read in class were any indication of what it was about, then it should at least keep her interest long enough to get through the story.

"I still think 1984 is my favorite book I've ever read in a class." She said, taking another bite and chomping down on a cookie dough chunk. "That or A Midsummer Night's Dream." Shakespeare wasn't exactly novel material, and occasionally she was sure the meaning got lost in translation from old English to Current.

Micah nodded with a groan at the mention of 1984. "Oh, gracious, I haven't thought about that book in so long. When I read it, I was dealing with a teacher who made reading just such a drag. I need to read it again when I can enjoy it." She rubbed her forehead, trying to remember more than just the pieces she could recall from her skimming and in-class naps. More often than not, unless the teacher inspired her, Micah didn't retain much from in class readings.

And, despite the stupidity of the students, Micah was fond of this teacher, if only because she was apssionate about what she was teaching. Micah had to give her credit for that.

"Oh, I can read Shakespeare for days," she gushed, licking her spoon clean before diving back into the cookie ice cream. "It gets to the point where I have to translate modern english into early modern english so that I can understand it." She giggled at herself, chmoping down on a hunk of cookie dough. "But my favorite book ever read in class has to be Life of Pi."

"I think that book was the most interesting to me because of the believability of it." She said, scooping out some chocolate and then a little bit of cookie dough. The mix turned out to be fantastic, and she hummed with glee. "Like, I could see the government trying that. And we as a generation are in the process of dumbing down and cutting apart the language." The thought of some of the words that kids had come up with made her want to gag. When she texted someone, or chatted on the computer, she made sure to type out each and every word. Castille felt she owed it to every teacher that has ever taught her vocabulary.

"Shakespeare is a lot of fun! I remember in middle school we read Hamlet, and the teacher would let us act out parts so that we better understood it. And after all of the learning we did, she showed us The Lion King." Her mind was blown. "I can never watch that movie the same way again."

Speaking of big cats.. "Life of Pi was alright, but I had a hard time believing it." She said, tapping her spoon against the rim of the cup. "I mean, it probably wasn't written to be a true story. There is no way a tiger wouldn't eat someone stuck in a boat, even if they were feeding it. But I liked it overall. I probably wouldn't mind reading it again, just to make sure."

Micah nodded as Castille spoke, eating ice cream at a much more comfortable pace. She could see whre believability would be important to someone. As for her, the more outragous, the better. It was why she liked science fiction so much. Whle others struggled to figure out how such things were possible, like full room, interactive TV screens and fourhundred foot bilboards, she just accepted it, marveling at the winder of someone's imagination.

"Mm, Shakespeare writes awesome disney movies," she gushed, grinning brightly. "My teacher never drew those paralells for me, though. I was watching it my whole life, and then I read Hamlet and my brain sort of exploded." She licked the spoon clean again before diving back into the closest cup. Micah never had been a picky eater. As both cups began to dwindle away to half thier original size, she began to mourn a little. No more ice cream and they would probably have to part ways when the treat was finished.

Castille too noticed that the ice cream was starting to fade into nothingness. Well, not nothingness. It transferred into a cold belly and a want to take a nap.

"Disney movies in general are awesome because you can watch them at different ages and find things that you somehow missed before." Her friends had quite a time of Disney movie nights. They would spend all night watching movies they hadn't seen in years, marveling at the changes in perspective with age.

The cups were quickly dwindling now that the remaining ice cream was beginning to melt between bites.

"You know, we should hang out again sometime." Castille said, pointing her spoon at Micah. "You seem like an alright person" She laughed, mouth cold from the ice cream.

"Oh my god, I know!" Micah laughed, throwing her head back in a chortle that rocked ehr whole body. "I watch those movies and I'm like 'how did this even make it past the censors?!' and 'how did I not catch this before?!'" She poked at a chunk of half melted ice cream before she popped it into er mouth, letting the melt fully on her tongue happily.

"And you're not half bad either. Maybe we could make a two man study group for class, neh?" Not a bad idea. Micah didn't necessarily need the help, but a sounding board that didn't shoot down every one of ehr idea would be nice to have around. And Castille seemed to chare some of ehr griefs about the class. There was nothing like a good, old fashioned b***h fest.

"Should we meet up again sometime," she offered, grabbing her phone out from her pocket. "We can exchange numbers and go from there!"

"A study group? That sounds great!" Castille could use someone to keep her awake in class, and Micah was already on the fast track to best friend-dom. Granted, it didn't take much for people to become her best friend. Castille was open to friends in anyone at anytime. But Micah had quite a bit in common with the blonde, making her a step up above the rest.

She pulled out her phone, tapping into the contact list and sliding toward Micah. She took Micah's phone, adding her name, number and email address to the contact list. Once she got her phone back, she rose from her seat, tossing the empty ice cream cup into the round garbage.

"Whaddaya say we blow this Popsicle stand?" She said, laughing at her own horrible joke.

Micah took back her phone, shoving it unceremoniously into her pocket with a grin. She stood obediently, appriciating the lame joke with a wry toss of her head, creating a bouncy whirlwind of upset curls. "Oh dear," she groaned, tossing the empty cups into the trash bin with a bit of a flourish. "I think we'll be getting along very well. We will have to meet up again." She gave Castille a flirtatious wink, something she'd rather made a habit of upon puberty with both men and women.

"I'd see you out, but if I'm not back home soon, the parents are gonna freak. Still new, so when I'm late, they think I'm dead." Micah giggled lightly, tossing her ruby rats next again as she turned, swivling to wave as she exited the shop.

Castille laughed and waved, watching the young girl, her new friend, leave. "See you around!" She shouted after her, turning on the spot and walking down the road in the opposite direction, smiling to herself.

Class will be much more fun now!
