So the earth phony knew the poem. Good. It might have been the unicorn's imagination, but there seemed to be an air of destiny to their recitation. The other filly sounded determined, with iron in her voice. But Ender still wouldn't meet the other's gaze; nay, it would spoil the moment. Not until the poem was complete would they properly introduce themselves. Searching the ceiling for inspiration by pretending it was a marled grey stormsky, she spoke the next verse more loudly than she had before. "We passed the school, where children strove at recess, in the ring;" And how fitting for this place, full of foals who care naught for dignity and culture. "We passed the fields of gazing grain, we passed the setting sun."

From the looks of it outside it definitely didn't seem like a cool place to be, not interesting, and she managed a pout-glare to both parents as they nudged their children into the establishment's doors. Once inside, however, all her predisposed annoyance at being uprooted so early in the morning was torn away and replaced with complete and utter rapture. A playground, all the toys you could imagine, slides and all sorts of things! It more than made up for her not getting to bring toys like her sister, not that she particularly had many that weren't shared among her siblings.

For a while, she busied herself by wandering around the entire area, peeking in on conversations to see if she could interject but mostly she wasn't sure what anyone was talking about and they all seemed pretty interested in doing their own thing, even Lullaby. Mandrake gave a quiet snort of frustration at not knowing what to do first -- there were so many options! -- and decided to climb up the slide and hang on it upside down. The world was much more interesting from this vantage point, she figured, plus it made her head feel all funny and it was amusing, at least for a while.

"Hard to starboard, Mr. Cardboard, we're shoving off this port!"

Mandrake's ears twitched and her orange eyes scanned for the voice of her only sister, spotting her atop a blue play mat with a paper hat. Tilting her head, the Earth Phony watched curiously as she played by herself and a wry grin slowly formed. Her tiny hooves assisted in her tumbling down the slide gracelessly, but she quickly righted herself and skittered across the play field of astro turf to the back of Knots' 'ship'.

"If we don't get this shipment of medicine to the islanders, they'll surely croak!"

Ah, she was on a mission of mercy! From Mandrake's viewpoint, she didn't see the blocks as sea monsters but as mere obstacles, or perhaps parts of the ship. This voyage needed to get a little bumpy.

Leaping out from the 'sea', Mandrake belly flopped onto the mat and sent quite a flew blocks flying every which way. A childish roar was called out as she writhed and wriggled around, flopping this way and that in front of her sister's ship. "Raaaawwrrr I'm a giant killer seaphony!" on her back, she kicked her legs violently at the air before quickly rolling to her feet and staring her sister down mischievously, "I'm gonna eat all your medicine, rawwrrr!"

Knots had expected difficulties on this voyage, but none had prepared her for the leviathan that pushed apart the ocean waves (aka, sent the carpet rippling and curling) and sent the boat veering off course.

"Avast! T'is none other than Charybdis, me lads!" Knots made a sound like a warning horn. "Vooot! Vooot! Vooot! All hands on deck, secure yourselves and hang on tight! I won't give up without a fight! Ready the harpoons!"

She took a few mismatched crayons and set them up as harpoons.

Oh joy! Oh bliss! It seemed as if this unicorn and Taquita had a table for two on their date with destiny. The last phony she planned on running into in this wretched daycare was one who had a love of the fine and timeless art of poetry. It was as if her entire, short life up to this moment had been building for the recitation of Dickenson's magnum opus about the frailty of being. It seemed fitting that two small horses made of nanites and science would discover a new zest for life together in this way. Like a boulder rolling down a slope, she found herself building the momentum with the next verse spewing from her mouth at a rapid pace, "We paused before a house that seemed a swelling of the ground; the roof was scarcely visible, the cornice but a mound."

Ender had to fight to keep an inappropriate grin from cracking on her face. Providence had smiled upon her this day. "Since then 'tis centuries; but each feels shorter than the day I first surmised the horses' heads were toward eternity." She finished far more loudly than she had started, though she suspected the louder children could not hear; she and the earth filly were in a world of their own. Only after finishing did she allow herself to turn and face the other. Red met blue for the briefest of moments before the glowing filly dipped her head and lowered her eyelids demurely, allowing the ghost of a smile to grace her muzzle. "It's nice," she said softly, "to meet a fellow poetry enthusiast. I dare say, I hadn't expected to find any sort of kinship with those I met here, but I am so very pleased to be proven wrong."

And what happened, then? Well, in Phonyille they say that the Taquita's small heart grew three sizes that day. Her pink cheeks turned a shade of red, and she bowed politely. "I'm pleased that you're pleased, I mean... hi, I'm Taquita. The two loud ones over there are my brothers, PARTY and Draft Punk; they don't share my love of poems, I felt isolated from culture." She quickly recovered, and dragged her eyes away from the floor, "I don't usually talk this much, I'm sorry if you're bothered."

To this, the unicorn smiled just a smidgen wider. Certainly, hugging this newly-met phony would be uncouth, but she dearly wanted to throw her forelimbs 'round the other's neck. "While they do say that silence is golden, being talented in the art of conversation certainly isn't a crime. Just now, I find it quite pleasant. It's lovely to meet you, Taquita; I'm End of an Era, and I haven't got any brothers. Isolation is a sentiment I know all too well."
PostPosted: Fri Nov 11, 2011 7:47 pm

Taquita was suddenly jealous that End of an Era's name was so much more dramatic sounding than her's. It also seemed to fit the unicorn. All Taquita's name represented was that she was the daughter of TACO, which was something she was not proud of. In fact, it was something she really wanted to forget. She had no idea why her two brothers looked up to him.

"And it's a pleasure to meet you also, End of an Era." She wasn't exaggerating when she said this was the most she'd talked; Taquita really was not great at conversations. One would think that being well-read would help this, but she hadn't had much practice. It seemed a shame that the test subject for her social graces was this wide-smiling and friendly filly. Taquita really liked her so far, and she didn't want to make a bad impression. "Did you live alone up until now then? That seems like a long time to not have any friends."

Then again, even with all these other Phonies around, Taquita didn't have any friends other than her books. Her statement seemed almost hypocritical in hindsight.

Lullaby lifted a hoof and waved at Knots, making a mental note to go play with her later. Her games were always the best.

“Your daddy must be really loud! A-and music! I do like music, I think…” He trailed off for a moment to actually ponder over the question. “My mama sings to me sometimes, but she usually falls asleep half way though.”

He gave a dreamy sort of smile. “And I like to sing nursery rhymes.”

Draft Punk smiled as his usual talkative brother began asking questions. PARTY usually liked to talk. Draft listened as the other colt talked about songs and his mother singing to him. He had to giggle.

"He he he, I can't imagine our mom singing to us. Unless it was some weird french song," he smiled at his brother then looked back to Lullaby, "me and PARTY were about to play with some instruments. Want join us?"

The blurple colt pointed to a shelf that seemed filled with random toy instruments just right for little hooves. He walked over and pulled out the keyboard. He pushed the on button and began testing the sounds it made.

"Hmmm, not like the one at dads house but it will do. Come on PARTY! Let's rock the house!", he nodded as if he knew what that statement meant. He had just heard his dad say it.

Lullaby’s attention only drifted for a second, when he spotted Mandrake. He followed her with his eyes as she made her way around the room, eventually stopping to play with Knots. Oh, he was so tempted to run over and play with his siblings. He could be a merphony!

His attention shifted back to Draft and his longing to play fun imaginary games with his sisters quickly disappeared when the two brothers offered to play with him. With instruments! So exciting!

“Yes please. That sounds really fun and uh…” He followed Draft over to the instruments. They all looked fascinating but he wasn’t sure which one would suit him the best. Eventually the white phony settled on a little flute, holding it carefully with his hooves as he gave an experimental blow.

“… Um… ah you mentioned French songs… and I know… a French lullaby. I like to study them… well, all lullabies not just ones in other languages… ” He blushed and smiled, but began to recite what he could remember.

“Mon petit enfant, mon petit enfant
Le ciel est dans tes yeux.
Mais ferme les maintenant, mais ferme les maintenant
Demain c'est un autre jour.”

Probably not house rocking material, but Lullaby liked it. Though he wasn’t entirely sure he had said all the words properly.

Babby Rabbit wasn't really dropped off so much as she'd passed by the new plastic building and her curiosity was instantly piqued. She remembered saying to herself 'gee, I wonder what that place is and how to get in!' but it had been closed. Until now. She fluttered unsteadily in the air, upside down, peering at the door and flicking her little ears as she heard voices coming from inside.

So she let herself in. Flopping down onto all four feet, her face lit up at all of the babbies. All. The. Babby.

Prancing about the room like a little pink blur, she stopped herself before a particularly dark babby with purple and curly stripey hair. "HI!"

Knots gave a hearty salute to Babby Rabbit.

"Ahoy!" she said before turning back to steer an imaginary wheel where she stood behind a tiny paper boat.

Mandrake's eyes lit up at the strange name her sister had given her in their play, a shrewd grin playing across her snout. She wasn't quite sure what it meant or who the name belonged to, it all sounded like gobbldygook to her but it had a nice ring to it that made her decide it was the name of a proper sea monster and so she was going to roll with it. And roll she did, getting up on her hooves and stomping around on the blue mat that was their small ocean, roaring and kicking blocks all around.

"Your torpedoes won't do you any good, I'll gobble 'em up! Raawwrr!" Stomp stomp stomp, Mandrake circled around Knots' ship and took one of the props representing the medicine in her mouth, growling and shaking it this way and that. The sudden call of 'ahoy' from her sister -- nay, her adversary -- distracted Mandrake for her to stop shaking the 'medicine' all around and look over at a new addition.

She was... very pink.

Unlike most of the others here, she didn't seem to be a part of a big group of siblings, though, and she was a pegasus! Spitting out the prop, Mandrake plopped her rump down on the mat and stared at Babby Rabbit for a few seconds before deciding to break character long enough to confide in her sister; "I wish I had wings." At least Knots as a unicorn, she had something special going for her amidst the sea of boys that were their brothers but Mandrake Blossom felt a little left out in that regard.

It just meant she had to be even cooler in personality to be on the same level of her sister and brothers, and she was going to do her best.

Spinning about as quickly as possible, Babby Rabbit turned so fast her head spin. Even before she could actually focus on the little voice that had shouted at her the pink babby's mouth was open and answering- "AHOY! Wait what does ahoy mean is that a way of saying hello? Like some people say hiya or howd-" And then she stopped. She turned slowly to peer at the other girl babby that looked very much like some of the others about, including the ship's captain, and taking a cautious step forward first mimicked the rump plopping and peeeeeered at Mandrake.

"You have very pretty hair."

Then she was up again and running around to stand next to Knots. "Are you guys playing pretend?! Can I play pretend? I love to play pretend! What do you want me to be? I can be anything you tell me to!"
