"Eon!" Ariel snorted out a tiny puff of air, just enough to ruffle the Joltik's fur.

Cygnus ran his hands over the case for another few moments, but he was becoming impatient. "I've got nothing," he said. "I think we'll have to smash it. Do you have something we could use? I used to have a walking stick I took everywhere, but since I met Ariel I haven't needed it."

Cygnus took the fossil from Duo, feeling its weight, testing its strength. "No way we're going to break this by hand," he told his friend. "But I think Ariel might be able to help us with that." He whistled to the Espeon as he placed the fossil on the floor.

Ariel looked up from where he was playing with Duo's Joltik. "Spi," he chirped, lifting a paw to gently pat the bug on the head before trotting over to look expectantly up at Cygnus.

"I think one good blast of Psychic should crack this, hm?" Cygnus backed away from where he'd laid the fossil.

"Speon," the Espeon answered. He turned to gaze intently at the fossil, bracing his legs on the floor, his tail stiffly pointing toward the ceiling. The purplish-pinkish psychic field began gathering around the gem on Ariel's forehead, brightening until -- "Es-pe-on!"

A beam of psychic energy shot forward to strike the fossil, holding steady until the ancient shell split.

Ariel picked up the revealed rock fragments in his teeth, then trotted over to Cygnus and deposited his prize in the man's hands.

Cygnus wiped the Espeon drool from the fragments, feeling their strange shape before proffering one to Duo. "I don't think these came from the fossil," he said. "They're not just rocks. That clue led us straight to them. Maybe they're part of some sort of puzzle... Maybe this whole house is." He turned toward the door through which they'd entered the dining room. "Shall we go see what else we can find?"
